1UP COVER STORY | WEEK OF DECEMBER 31 | WHY WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT 2013

Why We're Excited About 2013

This week, 1UP looks forward to what's primed to be an amazing year in gaming.

With an entire week dedicated to our favorite games of this past year, it's safe to say that 2012 is (almost) officially behind us. And such is the nature of our business to look forward to the bright new horizon in games that are getting ready to gobble up our precious hours. If you're anything like me, 2012 left you with one hell of a backlog. But for the time being, we'll forget about that stack of games just waiting to be played, and instead concentrate on what the new year has in store for us.

This week, we're going to be bringing you a fresh look at the wealth of games that make us excited for 2013. We know that there's no way we could be comprehensive with this week's coverage. There are going to be currently unannounced games that blow us away, and sleeper hits that turn out to be some of the best experiences of the year. But what we do have here is a slew of games that stretch across the entire breadth of our medium. They span all genres, platforms, and budgets. Some are indie titles that will attempt to change the way we look at games, while others are sequels that build upon some of our favorite franchises. But the one thing they all share is our genuine excitement over their arrival. Sure, there's a good chance that some of these are going to turn out to be duds. But for now, we wait with bated breath for their arrival.

David Oxford: It has been a long journey for Lara Croft, who first appeared to gamers 17 years ago in Tomb Raider for the PC, SEGA Saturn, and Sony PlayStation (though it was the latter which held her as an unofficial mascot of sorts for a time). And that notwithstanding, it has been a long journey for the creation of her latest title, also called Tomb Raider, which began development back in 2008-- a development cycle which will approach nearly five years by the time it is released in March of 2013.
