Cyberpunk 2077 trailer teases Witcher 3 announcement?
Jan 11th 2013, 05:34

Reddit users say they have unveiled a secret message in the new trailer for CD Projekt Red's upcoming RPG which talks of a soon-to-be announced "fully open-world game with an intense story".

It appears Polish developer CD Projekt Red wanted to give fans a little more than they bargained for with the release of the new trailer for the studio's upcoming Cyberpunk 2077.

According to some Reddit users, a frame at the end of the trailer contains a hidden message from the developer.

In the message, which has been decoded on Reddit, CD Projekt Red reportedly says Cyberpunk 2077 is currently scheduled for release in 2015 but will more likely come out "when it's done".

The message also speaks of a new project which is "much closer to being completed", and which will reportedly be announced on February 5.

"Do you like our latest creation?," the message begins. "We certainly hope so. You may remember that we sometimes send you guys secret messages like this. It's a great way for us to speak right to you instead of burying ourselves in corporate mumbo-jumbo!"

"We are about to reveal our other project which is much closer to being completed and yes, it will also be a fully open-world game with an intense story. You can probably guess the game we're talking about. On the 5th of February it will all be clear."

This led some Reddit users to speculate CD Projekt Red are gearing up to announce The Witcher 3. The message also calls for applications to join the in-house development team and describes more details about the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077:

"The short description is that it will be a story-heavy, nonlinear, open world RPG based on the well-known Cyberpunk pen and paper system and setting. Building open world games is something we are mastering right now and we believe that properly joining non-linear gameplay with an excellent story telling will bring a totally new quality. We'll tell some more about it soon!"

The message ends with a description of a reportedly newly-created forum titled "Afterlife", inviting users to join.

Cyberpunk 2077 puts players into a "dark future" in 2077 where advanced technologies have become "both the salvation and the curse of humanity." The game promises a nonlinear story designed for "mature" players and is set in the metropolis of Night City. It was also revealed today that Cyberpunk 2077 will feature sandbox elements.

Lara Croft Xbox 360 controller unveiled
Jan 11th 2013, 01:24

New Tomb Raider-themed 360 wireless controller unveiled at CES 2013.

To celebrate the launch of Tomb Raider this year, Microsoft has collaborated with Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix to unveil a limited edition Lara Croft themed 360 controller. Featuring a design inspired by Lara's trials and tribulations in the series reboot, the wireless controller also contains a customizable D-pad, which is able to switch from a "plus" design to a "disc" pattern.

Fans who purchase the controller will also receive a download token for an Xbox 360 exclusive playable character--the Scavenger Archer. The controller will be available with the game's release on March 5 in the U.S. and will cost $59.99. In Australia, the controller will launch February 21 for a recommended retail price of A$69.95.

Tomb Raider is the first instalment in the series since 2010's downloadable multiplayer-focused Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, and the first standalone game since 2008's Tomb Raider: Underworld. Karl Stewart, Crystal Dynamics's global brand director, revealed last year that the game's campaign will last between 12 and 15 hours, dependent on gamers' play style.

Tomb Raider is due out March 5, 2013 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Gamers' association asks Biden not to blame video games for Connecticut shooting
Jan 11th 2013, 01:18

Open letter from gaming consumer group to US vice president asks that government and public stop blaming video games for real-world violence.

The Entertainment Consumers Association (ECA) has written a public letter to US Vice President Joe Biden asking him not to blame video games for last month's mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

Biden will meet with leaders of the game industry today in Washington, D.C. to discuss the role of violent games as part of a wider task force looking into the role of violent media in mass shootings.

ECA vice president and general counsel Jennifer Mercurio urged Biden to support the public's "constitutional right" to access and buy games, and to not blame media for the recent tragedy.

"With the recent tragedy on everyone's minds, some people are looking for a cause and culprit other than the shooter," Mercurio said in the open letter. "Unfortunately some are blaming media, including video games, for violent behavior in individuals. We know this isn't the case; banning or regulating media content even more won't solve the issue."

The ECA is a non-profit membership organization representing consumer affairs in interactive entertainment in the United States and Canada. According to Mercurio, the ECA serves to give gamers a collective voice and address issues relating directly to them.

In the letter, Mercurio also referenced a study by Christopher J. Ferguson of Texas A&M International University which found no link between violent games and real-world violence.

"While video game sales have increased, violent crime has been steadily decreasing according to FBI statistics. In 2011, video game sales increased to over $27 billion dollars and violent crimes nationwide decreased 3.8 percent from 2010. Since 2002, violent crime has decreased 15.5 percent. This is all during the time when games like Call of Duty and Halo have dominated sales."

Mercurio ended the letter by stating the ECA's willingness to meet with Biden to further discuss the issue.

Earlier today, the International Game Developers Association issued a similar statement to Biden, urging him to steer clear of any action that could result in the censorship of video games.

Xbox 360 was best-selling U.S. console in December
Jan 11th 2013, 01:09

Microsoft says this marks the 24th consecutive month in which the console has come out on top.

Microsoft has announced its Xbox 360 console ended 2012 as the number one console in terms of units sold in the U.S.

According to the publisher, Xbox 360 sold 1.4 million units in December.

Microsoft says this number is more than double the amount of the second place console, and marks the 24th consecutive month that the 360 has been on top. Microsoft listed the NPD Group as a source for the latter statistic.

The publisher also announced more than $1.27 billion was spent on Xbox 360 retail in December, including hardware, software, and accessories.

Today it was also revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the country's best-selling game for December and all of 2012, marking the fourth consecutive year in which a Call of Duty game has been the top-selling title.

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge becomes first R18+ game in Australia
Jan 11th 2013, 00:48

Classification Board announces Wii U console title is first game to receive adult classification; title will be rated R18+ for high impact violence.

The upcoming Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge for Nintendo's Wii U console has become the first video game in Australia to receive the newly-introduced R18+ adult rating for games.

According to the Classification Board of Australia, the Team Ninja-developed action adventure title received an R18+ for "high impact bloody violence". In the game, players assume the role of Ryu Hayabusa, a cursed ninja battling a terrorist organisation.

"Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge contains violence that is high in impact because of its frequency, high definition graphics, and emphasis on blood effects," Classification Board director Lesley O'Brien said in a statement.

The new guidelines for the Classification of Computer Games--including the R18+ rating--came into effect on January 1, 2013.

According to the Classification Board, Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge was submitted for rating by Nintendo on January 3, 2013. The rating decision was made by the Board today. The Board revealed the game was classified M (17+) by the Entertainment Rating Software Board (ESRB) in the United States and 18+ by the Pan European Game Information (PEGI) Scheme in Europe and the United Kingdom.

NPD: Black Ops II is US top-selling game of 2012
Jan 11th 2013, 00:34

Research group reveals latest Call of Duty not only December's top game, but entire year's; overall 2012 industry sales down 22 percent to $13.26 billion; Xbox 360 sells 1.4 million during month, Wii U total US reach 890,000.

Call of Duty: Black Ops II was the United States' best-selling game for December and all of 2012, research firm NPD Group announced today. This year marks the fourth consecutive year in which a Call of Duty game has been the top-selling title.

Overall, total video game sales for December slid 22 percent to $3.21 billion, while the total year's haul hit $13.26 billion, down 22 percent from last year's total of $16.99 billion. NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan cautioned that this figure only represents new physical retail sales of hardware, software, and accessories, and makes up just 50 percent of total consumer spend.

"When you consider our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in December such as used and rentals at $217 million, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, mobile apps and the consumer spend on social network games at $765 million, we would estimate the total consumer spend in December to be over $4.1 billion," Callahan said in a statement.

Hardware also took a hit during December (-20 percent to $1.07 billion) and for all of 2012 (-27 percent to $4.04 billion). Callahan said Wii U sales were lower on a unit basis when compared to the original Wii in December 2006, but due to the Wii U's higher price, the system generated 11 percent more dollar sales year-to-date than the Wii by the end of 2006.

Separately, Microsoft announced that it sold 1.4 million Xbox 360 consoles during December. According to the Halo maker, that represents more than double the next closest competitor. Total consumer spend on the Xbox 360 platform (games, hardware, accessories) totaled $1.27 billion for the period. The Xbox 360 has now been the top-selling console in the United States for 24 straight months.

Nintendo also chimed in, saying the Wii U sold 460,000 units in December, boosting the system's total US tally to 890,000. In all, Wii U hardware sales have generated $300 million, $30 million better than the original Wii did during the same period of time. Additionally, New Super Mario Bros. U has now sold more than 580,000 units in the US, at an attach rate of more than 65 percent.

Total software sales for December slid 27 percent to $1.58 billion, while software sales for the year suffered less, dipping 22 percent to $7.09 billion. Callahan said a major reason why retail sales for the year were down double-digits was due to a lack of new releases. According to NPD data, 2012 saw 29 percent fewer titles across consoles, portables, and PC. However, the games that were released generated 8 percent more units per title and 11 percent more dollars per title.

Another bright spot for December 2012 was Ubisoft's action-shooter Far Cry 3

"Far Cry 3 generated positive critical reviews and ranked sixth overall based on December unit sales. This praise, along with stepping outside the hectic November launch period, led to this game being the second-most successful December launch since NPD began tracking retail sales in 1995," Callahan said.

Switching to accessories, this unit saw revenue dive during December (-14 percent to $603 million) and for the year (-8 percent to $2.51 billion). Callahan said Activision's Skylanders series was a continued success during the year, with character and battle packs for Skylanders Giants driving more than double the unit sales compared to the original Skylanders last year.

Additionally, December 2012 was the best December on record for point and subscription card sales on a dollar and unit basis. And lastly, the headset and headphones category within the overall accessories unit grew compared to 2011, led by sales of Turtle Beach peripherals.
