Shortly before Final Fantasy XIII launched, I had a casual conversation with the development team about the game. Someone -- I don't remember who -- mentioned that Call of Duty 4 had been one of the inspirations behind FFXIII's design. I wasn't quite sure what to make of that comment, since at the time I had yet to play FFXIII (or, for that matter, Call of Duty 4), and I didn't have a chance to follow up to learn more.
No, you're not seeing things; we originally ran this contest a few weeks ago, but it mostly went ignored by our well-meaning readers thanks to the approaching Christmas holiday. That said, we've decided to re-launch it with a brand new due date for entries. Check out the information below to find out how to win an iCade of your own!
The PC can be pretty intimidating. It's easy to assume that the platform's power and versatility will translate to huge costs and overwhelming complexity. In reality, you don't need to earn a degree in astrophysics or sell all the blood in your body to play games on a computer. I've been playing PC games and building my own systems for a little over 15 years, and I'm easily the dumbest person I know. There's nothing to be afraid of.
A few days ago, I wrote about how the PC hit Terraria is set to launch on PSN and XBLA in just a few months. Aside from the influences of classic titles like Metroid, Castlevania, and Minecraft, the thing that struck me the most about my time with the game was just how massive the world was. Seriously, even on its "small" setting, the map is completely daunting. Couple this with a robust crafting system and a randomly generated world, and what you have is an experience that console gamers are going to be able to sink a whole mess of time into.
For those of you who haven't put hundreds of hours into the PC version, we recorded a couple of videos to give you a taste of what Terraria has in store for you. The first involves Logan Rosenstein from 505 Games giving you a brief glimpse at how your first few minutes in Terraria are going to play out. Aside from going over some of the basic mechanics, he highlights how the control scheme has been changed to reflect the strengths of the 360/PS3 controllers.
