Walking Dead shooter aiming for Wii U
Jan 10th 2013, 14:01

Activision confirms Survival Instincts game based on AMC TV show coming to Nintendo's new system in March using GamePad to manage inventory.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instincts is aiming for release on Wii U. Producer Glenn Gamble confirmed with Digital Spy that the zombie shooter is in development for Nintendo's first high-definition console, though it was not always in the cards.

"We were over halfway through the project when the Wii U thing started coming about," Gamble said. "We didn't want to change the game, because the game had already been established, so we tried to say, 'What can we augment with the Wii U version?'"

Gamble further explained that the Wii U GamePad will be used in Survival Instincts as a "more elegant" inventory management system.

"With the Wii U you have access to your backpack at all times, so you can tap what weapons you want, you can drop stuff," he said. "It's a lot more streamlined."

In addition to confirming a Wii U version of Survival Instincts, it was also announced today that the game will arrive on store shelves in the United Kingdom Friday, March 29. Games typically release the Tuesday before in the United States, meaning Survival Instincts is expected to arrive stateside on March 26.

Survival Instincts was announced in July 2012 and is based on AMC's The Walking Dead TV series. It will be set in rural Georgia and focus on brothers Daryl and Merle Dixon. Players will be able to choose whether to confront the undead head-on or attempt to avoid detection.

The game is also currently in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC at Terminal Reality. That studio's previous credits include Atari's Ghostbusters: The Video Game, as well as Majesco's BloodRayne and BloodRayne 2. The company's most recent release was Kinect Star Wars.

Apple working on less expensive iPhone - Report
Jan 10th 2013, 13:33

Sources say company has been planning lower-end device for years, though it may finally ship this year with shell made of polycarbonate plastic.

Apple is currently working on a less expensive iPhone, sources reportedly familiar with the matter have told The Wall Street Journal. According to these people, Apple has contemplated a lower-end iPhone for years, though the company is more serious this time, and could even ship the device as early as later this year.

The less expensive iPhone would resemble the standard issue iPhone, though it would feature a cheaper body made of polycarbonate plastic. By comparison, the iPhone 5 has an aluminum casing. Other parts of the phone could be recycled from older iPhone models, the sources said.

In the United States, the new iPhone 5 model begins at $199 with a two-year contract at carriers like Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and AT&T. The iPhone 4 retails for $99 with a two-year contract, while the iPhone 4 is free.

Apple has not commented on the rumor.

The move comes amidst increased competition from rivals, including Google's Android line. The newspaper reports, citing International Data Corporation figures, that Apple held just 14.6 percent of worldwide smartphone marketshare in the 2012 third quarter, down from a previous high of 23 percent a year prior.

The sources further claimed that Apple executives tabled the idea of a cheaper iPhone model years ago due to concerns that a second iteration would "complicate its manufacturing processes." Instead, Apple chose to keep aging iPhone models on the market for less, a decision that did not require the design and development of any new products.

Minecraft lessons made compulsory in Swedish school
Jan 10th 2013, 12:06

Around 180 students taking part in creative Minecraft experiment.

The Viktor Rydberg school in Stockholm has introduced compulsory Minecraft lessons for its 13-year-old pupils in an effort to teach them about planning for the future and environmental issues. Around 180 students are expected to take part in this experiment, where teacher Monica Ekman explains they will learn “about city planning, environmental issues, getting things done, and even how to plan for the future." “We think it“s a fun way of learning and it“s nice for the students to achieve something,“ added Ekman in an interview with The Local.

The school's decision to introduce the Minecraft lessons came about from Sweden's "Future City" competition, which challenged educational establishment to put forward ideas for innovation in teaching. Ekman admitted that some parents found the idea a little uncomfortable, but defended the lessons by saying Minecraft is "a fun way of learning and it“s nice for the students to achieve something.“

This isn't the first time Minecraft has been used in youth programs: last year developer Mojang partnered with the United Nations to create its Block by Block program designed to refresh urban spaces.
