David Oxford: Once the autumn season does its work and the cold and frosty weather of winter sets in, it is several months before flowers once again begin to bloom with the arrival of spring. But for fans of Nintendo's Pikmin series, this particular winter has lasted for over eight years following the 2004 release of Pikmin 2 for the GameCube.

Matt Clark: Somewhere in your genetic make-up -- deeper down for some -- nature has put in the code for paternal instincts. Once you have a child, the drive to protect that little bundle of joy is incredibly overwhelming. Every scratch and bruise, every time another snot-nosed kid acts like a bully, it feels like you're taking on the wound ten-fold. The Last of Us may have figured out how to tap into those emotions, tugging at our heart-strings to create a narrative with real staying power.

Matt Clark: As a person who spends a great deal of time thinking about games, writing about games, and reviewing games, I'm supposed to separate myself a bit from the creators of the subject matter. After all, how can I fairly give you, the dear reader, a fair analysis if I'm secretly obsessed with a developer? Well, that's the notion, anyway. But in reality, I suppose disclosure is really the important factor, and while I'm being honest, I might as well tell you I drool over pretty much everything created by Double Fine.

Nadia Oxford: I've always had an affinity for mythological beasts and persons, which is why I was interested in Darkstalkers the second my eye fell on a preview in some '90s-era game magazine. I was kind of an innocent kid, though, and I had to ask my mom what a succubus is. Her response was understandably vague.

thumbnail Dreadful Debut Trailer Bodes Poorly for The Walking Dead FPS

The Walking Dead Survival Instinct

Update: As it turns out, the trailer in question isn't real -- sort of. The trailer, as it exists, was not put together or released by anyone affiliated with the game, which is reassuring in a way. However, the actual footage it contains does come from an early version of the game seen in a recent episode of IGN's Up at Noon. So while the content wasn't intended for use in a proper trailer, it does reflect what the game looked like at one point in development. That makes it more difficult to criticize what's seen in the fan-made trailer, as what's shown isn't meant to stand alone as a reflection of what the game is all about. That hopefully means the game and its first official gameplay trailer will look better than what is talked about below, but only time will tell.

Original Story: As someone who is indifferent to The Walking Dead franchise, I wouldn't expect myself to care much if the series were to see the release of a bad piece of media. Having seen how the series I've cared most about had to suffer one way or another eventually (see: the latter parts of The X-Files and Twin Peaks), the notion of a bad Walking Dead game being released sooner or later would only feel like par for the course to me -- particularly after fans already got to enjoy Telltale's stellar adventure game.

Jeremy Parish: You've never heard of the legendary guild El Spite, but I know them well. We've been adventuring together for years, now. Its members come and go, but its leaders -- stalwart Protector knight Ellysia and ferocious Landsknect combatant Yukiko -- have remained faithful companions across three epic quests. Together, El Spite and I have fought our way through the perilous ruins of an ancient civilization to piece together the truth about the mysterious "world tree" labyrinths that have sprung up across the world. I've written lengthy accounts of their adventures. We've mapped dozens of pages worth of pretend graph paper together. And in a few months, we'll do it all over again.

thumbnail Why We're Excited About 2013: Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2

Nadia Oxford: Like Dracula's moody son Alucard, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 carries a heavy destiny on its shoulders. Though its predecessor was generally well-received in 2010, there's since been a noticeable lack of anything from the franchise that recalls its roots as a prime platforming specimen. Even beloved Castlevania producer/developer Koji "IGA" Igarashi has been absent from the series, and the action-heavy Lords of Shadow games are a different species compared to IGA's progeny, which are defined by sprawling mansions and long bouts of exploration.
