Nintendo: Selling $50-$60 games 'challenging'
Apr 30th 2013, 14:23

Iwata says it is difficult to meet consumer expectations for packaged software, will focus on making games with greatest sales potential.

Software development is becoming increasingly difficult, according to Nintendo. President Satoru Iwata told investors as part of the company's latest earnings briefing that selling titles for $50-$60 has been a "challenge" for the Mario and Zelda developer.

"These days it is becoming increasingly challenging to determine the minimum development resources required for customer satisfaction. The point I am trying to get across is that currently it is more challenging to sell packaged software for around $50-$60," Iwata said.

To combat this difficulty, Iwata pointed to digital games in "other formats." Still, he acknowledged that satisfying customers with a $50-$60 product has been no easy task, and breaking even requires millions of units to be sold across the world.

"It is true that it is becoming increasingly challenging to meet the expectations of consumers who are willing to pay $50-$60 for a game, and it is difficult to break even unless a huge number of units is sold all over the world, so it cannot be denied that software development is becoming more challenging," Iwata said.

A silver lining, Iwata explained, is that such games have a higher sales potential than ever before, thanks to the growing gamer userbase.

"Among such packaged software, however, the sales of popular games are much larger than in the past. Therefore, if we create more hit games, the software development business can still be very profitable," he said. "All games break even if they sell millions of copies worldwide, so we will continue to do our best to develop games which have high sales potential."

Portal designer reveals new game
Apr 30th 2013, 13:42

Kim Swift's downloadable title Soul Fjord will be exclusive to $99 Android-powered Ouya console.

Portal designer Kim Swift and the team at Airtight Games have announced Soul Fjord, a downloadable game due out exclusively on the $99 Android-powered Ouya console.

Ouya CEO Julie Uhrman revealed in February that Swift and Airtight Games were working on an Ouya-exclusive, though its name and details were not divulged until this week.

Soul Fjord is described as a randomly generated dungeon-crawler with rhythm-based combat. The game is set in a fantasy world where the genres of '70s funk and soul have melded with Norse mythology.

In Soul Fjord, gamers player as Magnus Jones, a warrior slain in battle but brought to Valhalla by the valkyries. As it turns out, Magnus has been left off the guest list and must fight his way to the World Tree to salvage his reputation as "baddest Viking in town" to gain entry to Valhalla.

Swift also worked on Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 at Valve before she left in 2009.

The Ouya launches publicly on June 4 through retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, GAME, GameStop, and Target, as well as through the Ouya online store. Additional controllers can be purchased for $50.

Madden NFL suit going to trial
Apr 30th 2013, 13:06

Designer Robin Antonick seeking millions in allegedly unpaid royalties and damages from Electronic Arts over football franchise.

Original Madden NFL designer Robin Antonick's lawsuit against Electronic Arts is going to trial after a California federal judge denied EA's final attempt to dismiss the case, according to a release from his legal team. Antonick originally sued EA in April 2011.

Court proceedings are scheduled to begin on June 17, 2013.

Antonick is accusing EA of withholding royalties and demanding a share of the profits the series has generated over the years. More than 99 million Madden NFL games have been sold to date, generating billions in revenue.

According to the complaint, Antonick conceived and developed the first version of Madden and was described as "miraculous" by EA. In all, he is seeking tens of millions in restitution.

"We have very compelling evidence indicating that EA used Mr. Antonick's ground-breaking code and design elements as the basis for both past and present Madden NFL titles," said Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP partner Robert Carey in a statement. "Yet, EA has failed to compensate him as required by his agreement or give him proper credit for his work. We look forward to proving our case at trial, and we are very confident that we will prevail."

An EA representative declined to comment.

The next entry in the series is Madden NFL 25, a special version of the game launching in August to mark the franchise's 25th anniversary.

Quantic: PS4 like the PC of 2014 or 2015
Apr 30th 2013, 12:23

Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls studio exec touts power of Sony's upcoming next-gen platform, says studio is seeing "big difference" over PS3.

The PlayStation 4 is like the PC of 2014 or 2015, Quantic Dream co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere has claimed.

Speaking with GameSpot at the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend, the executive said the Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls studio is seeing a major difference over the PlayStation 3 during initial tests for its in-development PS4 game.

"We are already seeing in the first [PS4 tests] that we're doing a big difference," de Fondaumiere said.

He explained that the studio's goal with the new technology is, as it has always been, to capture the most realistic and authentic performance as possible. This will translate to believable characters in the end product, he said.

De Fondaumiere also revealed that the PS4 demo (below) Quantic Dream studio head David Cage showed off during the platform's announcement in February was just a "first glimpse" at what the technology is capable of rendering. The studio is working on an all-new engine for the PS4, he confirmed.

Though Quantic Dream's PS4 ambitions may be grand, de Fondaumiere admitted all technology--including Sony's next-gen platform--has limitations.

"There are limitations on the PlayStation 3 and there will be limitations on PlayStation 4," he said. "With the PlayStation 4, it's something that really is more like the PC of next year or two years."

Beyond: Two Souls launches October 8 exclusively for PS3.

Quantic Dream's PS4 game will, according to Cage, retain the studio's emphasis on narrative, though further details have not been divulged. He described the game as "incredibly exciting; it's one of the strongest concepts we've had at Quantic Dream and we're really excited about it."

The game may include multiplayer, a first for Quantic Dream, as the studio is currently seeking an online programmer with a "strong understanding" of the multiplayer genre. An ideal candidate would also have a "very deep and high knowledge" of online gaming and network development.

Company of Heroes 2 Theatre of War mode detailed
Apr 30th 2013, 11:00

WWII RTS to feature a series of single-player and co-op missions to bridge the gap between single-player and multiplayer.

Company of Heroes 2 developer Relic Entertainment has unveiled the upcoming WWII RTS' Theater of War mode.

Theater of War is a string of single-player and co-op missions, each themed around a particular battle across the game's Eastern Front setting. Missions take place in a particular year of the war, and will feature units and abilities that reflect the mood and setting of the conflict at the time.

Company of Heroes 2's Theater of War mode will ship with a series of 18 missions set in 1941. More missions will be added as downloadable content, including the mini-campaign offered to customers who preorder the game.

SEGA says the missions will include "solo challenges where players are pitted against overwhelming odds, AI battles against an enemy commander with a unique play style, and co-operative scenarios for fans to enjoy with their friends"

While the game will feature its own single-player campaign and multiplayer modes, game director Quinn Duffy said Theatre of War will act as a bridge and help “to introduce traditionally solo players to the online elements of the game.“

Relic Entertainment recently said that a third game in its Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War series was a "strong possibility" for the developer.

Company of Heroes 2 will be released for PC on June 25. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Scott Stuber to produce Gears of War film - Report
Apr 30th 2013, 07:47

Scott Stuber signs on to produce film adaptation of Gears of War.

Scott Stuber has signed on to produce and begin work on the script for the Gears of War film, Variety has reported.

Talks to adapt Epic Games“ third-person shooter Gears of War for the big screen have been underway for several years. The project, which was revealed in 2007, encountered development troubles in 2010 and was reportedly revived in 2012.

Stuber is no stranger to the action genre, having produced such films such as Safe House and the upcoming 47 Ronin.

Several Hollywood names have been attached to the project in the past, including directors Tony Scott (Top Gun, Man on Fire), Len Wiseman (Underworld: Evolution), and writer Chris Morgan (Wanted; The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift). The Creative Arts Agency, which represents Epic Games, was reportedly eager to meet with producers to discuss the film in October last year.

Lord of the Rings studio New Line originally picked up rights to the movie adaptation, but the project was put on hold in order to focus efforts on the Hobbit trilogy. Stuber reportedly has a first look deal with Universal.
