Pokemon Rainbow to be announced tomorrow? - Report
Jan 8th 2013, 03:13

Go Nintendo source believes new 3DS title will be unveiled by Nintendo tomorrow; game will reportedly feature settings and Pokemon from generations 1-4.

While Nintendo has already announced that its first Nintendo Direct for 2013 will feature Pokemon news, exactly what this announcement will entail is anyone's guess.

However, an anonymous source cited by Go Nintendo believes that the publisher will use tomorrow's live-stream to announce a new Pokemon 3DS title called Pokemon Rainbow.

"The game encompasses the settings and Pokemon from generations 1-4: Red and Blue, Gold and Silver, Ruby and Sapphire, and Diamond and Pearl," the source told Go Nintendo.

"You can take my word for it that the graphics are done up very nicely. The perspective is similar to what you'd expect from Pokemon games, but the camera is much more dynamic. The graphical style is characterised by very clean, dark lines. Battles look radically different and move away from the use of pixel art."

According to the source, the new game is concurrent with Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2's storyline and features over 20 new Pokemon, two of which will reportedly be revealed tomorrow.

"One is an evolution of an older Pokemon Eevee, called Draconeon. The other is a totally new Pokemon called Verbill. It looks like a rodent, much like the Pokemon Patrat, but has a sort of pirate theme going on."

In addition, the source reported that a Wii U app will be unveiled tomorrow alongside the game.

The most recent core Pokemon games were Pokemon Black and White 2, which released in North America in October 2012 behind positive critical plaudits.

Both games cracked the NPD Group's top 10 United States sales chart during their debut month, but neither charted in November (a month filled with heavyweights like Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Halo 4).

The Nintendo Direct live stream will take place at 6am EST.

StarCraft II player Snute to sign with TeamLiquid
Jan 8th 2013, 00:58

Norwegian player Jens "Snute" Aasgaard expected to sign with Team Liquid for 2013.

Norwegian StarCraft II player Jens "Snute" Aasgaard is expected to sign with Team Liquid for 2013, executives of several teams have told GameSpot.

The 22-year-old Zerg player has elected not to re-sign with his current team--Norway-based organization GamersLeague--after being courted by several teams with his impressive year-end performances.

After a rather rough start for the first three-quarters of 2012, Snute came out swinging at the DreamHack Winter Championships, knocking out Evil Geniuses' Ilyes "Stephano" Satouri and getting to the quarterfinals before being eliminated by eventual champion Song "Hero" Hyeon Deok. Snute continued his run at the fifth IGN ProLeague event in Las Vegas, tying with Canada's Chris "Huk" Loranger and China's Lei "XiGua" Wang as the highest-placing non-Korean player.

Snute's biggest triumph didn't come until the very last event of the year, where he earned his first major StarCraft II championship at the sixth edition of the HomeStoryCup in Krefeld, Germany. Snute's dominating run saw him never lose a match, beating players such as Jang "MC" Min Chul, Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen, and Stephano once again along the way. He would end things with a clean sweep of Korean Zerg Kang "Symbol" Dong Hyun in the finals, capping off an 18-2 performance throughout the weekend.

Snute will be the first non-Korean player signed to TeamLiquid since July 2011, when American Zerg Shawn "Sheth" Simon joined the team. Most recently, TeamLiquid lost ex-Brood War star Yum "Sea" Bo Sung to retirement, citing a lack of passion for StarCraft II.

Dead Space 3 demo arriving January 22
Jan 8th 2013, 00:47

Downloadable demo for Visceral Games' upcoming action shooter is arriving on PSN and Xbox Live Marketplace in late January; 360 owners can sign up for the demo a week early in an exclusive offer.

EA and Visceral Games have announced a downloadable demo for the upcoming action shooter, set for release on February 5.

The demo will be available for download on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Marketplace on January 22. However, EA is offering Xbox 360 owners the chance to access the demo a week early, on January 15. Interested players are invited to register here.

According to EA, the demo will feature a "customised portion of Tau Volantis," the ice planet from Dead Space 3, as well as new necromorphs and a separate weapon-crafting arena that will give players the chance to experiment with weapon combinations.

The demo will offer both single-player and online-only cooperative play. EA has also confirmed that the recently announced Kinect voice controls for Dead Space will be available in the demo.

"Dead Space 3 is the first game to feature co-op-specific voice commands for the Kinect," EA said. "Using your voice, you can find your partner, revive him, trade ammo and health packs in co-op, while in single-player, you'll have access to commands such as the ability to reload weapons, heal yourself, locate objectives, and open menus."

EA said that it is currently planning to offer the Dead Space 3 demo for the Xbox 360 and PS3 only.

Dead Space 3 is due out on February 5, 2013, in North America for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, with a release following in Europe on February 8. The game is the first entry in the action horror series to feature cooperative play. Players will venture to a new planet called Tau Volantis as series hero Isaac Clarke, but will also be joined by newcomer John Carver.

EA interested in THQ assets - Report
Jan 8th 2013, 00:32

Mass Effect publisher joins Warner Bros. as potential bidder for bankrupt publisher's franchises and studios; assets will be sold piecemeal.

Mass Effect and FIFA publisher Electronic Arts has joined media giant Warner Bros. as a potential bidder for bankrupt publisher THQ's assets. Writing from inside a bankruptcy court hearing today, Distressed Debt Investing reported that not only is EA interested in THQ's franchises and studios, but the publisher "has completed site visits" as well.

An EA representative was not immediately available to comment.

It was also revealed today in the court proceedings that stalking-horse bidder Clearlake Capital Group has agreed to allow bids for individual THQ titles. Previously, the firm was only planning to accept all-or-nothing bids, something creditors and US Trustee Roberta DeAngelis took issue with.

Last week, THQ banker Sam Greene revealed there were five active potential bidders for THQ's franchises and studios. EA and Warner Bros. are the only two named thus far, though Ubisoft had previously expressed interest in the company's games, with CEO Yves Guillemot saying in November, "They have good things."

What's more, Clearlake also moved today to extend its deadline for competing bids for its $60 million offer until January 15, an extension of five days over the previous January 10 end date. However, US Bankruptcy Court Judge Mary Walrath did not approve this timeline, saying it remained too short.

Parties later in the day agreed on a January 22 auction date, during which THQ assets can be purchased individually.

Dead Rising 3 spotted on resume
Jan 7th 2013, 18:55

LinkedIn profile of animation firm Blur Studio employee adds to speculation over unannounced Capcom zombie game.

Additional evidence for the existence of Dead Rising 3 has come to light. The LinkedIn resume of a rigging supervisor at animation firm Blur Studio (via All Games Beta) includes mention of an unannounced third entry in Capcom's zombie-themed series.

No further information on Dead Rising 3 was included in the LinkedIn profile, and a Capcom representative told GameSpot, "Capcom has made no announcements regarding any new Dead Rising titles."

Venice, California-based Blur Studio has created cinematics for numerous film, television, and game franchises. Most recently, the company has done work for the games Guardians of Middle-earth and BioShock: Infinite, as well as the title sequence for David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

This is not the first time Dead Rising 3 has been spoken of outside official channels. During December 2011, a report suggested the game would leave series star Frank West behind, instead focusing on an auto mechanic named Rick. If the report proves accurate, the game will be set in a fictional town known as Los Perdidos, California, where a zombie outbreak has closed off the town's borders.

Rick's plan, according to the report, is to restore a plane and escape the town before it is destroyed. Finding parts for the plane and getting it to fly will be one of the main features of the game, which will also reportedly include an "undercurrent of themes about illegal immigration."

The most recent entry in the Dead Rising series was Dead Rising 2: Off the Record, which was developed by Blue Castle Games and shipped in September 2010. For more on that title, check out GameSpot's review.

Telltale's The Walking Dead sells 8.5 million episodes
Jan 7th 2013, 18:08

Five-chapter series generates over $40 million in sales for developer Telltale; mobile sales account for 25 per cent of total.

Telltale Games' episodic adventure The Walking Dead has sold 8.5 million episodes to date. The title, which has been predominantly sold digitally, has generated over $40 million in revenue since the release of Episode One: A New Day in April 2012, CEO Dan Connors told the Wall Street Journal.

Originally released on Xbox Live, PlayStation 3, and PC, the series later transitioned to iOS, with mobile sales contributing 25 per cent to the overall sales figure. Sales of the widely acclaimed adventure were boosted by festive promotional offers on Steam and Xbox Live, where the game saw a 50 per cent discount. Additionally, the first episode, titled A New Day, was offered for download free of charge.

A second season of the game is also in the works. "We also have The Walking Dead signed up for another season, so we're gonna use a lot of the revenue we're generating to continue to grow the company," said Telltale boss Dan Connors. Connors also said that each customer spent an average of $16, which works out at over $40m in total revenue. Details about the storyline and launch date of season 2 have not yet been announced.

Analyst: Medal of Honor: Warfighter shipped 3 million copies
Jan 7th 2013, 17:10

Sterne Agee industry watcher estimates shipments of EA's new shooter have reached 3 million, coming up short of original's 5 million.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter failed to live up to its predecessor with regard to sales. That's according to Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia, who told investors today that EA likely shipped fewer than 3 million copies of Warfighter to date, compared to the 2010 original Medal of Honor's 5 million.

Since the game's release in October, EA has not announced official sales figures for Warfighter. In October, EA Labels boss Frank Gibeau said critical reception for the game "fell below our expectations."

Sterne Agee downgraded EA shares from "Buy" to "Neutral" today over concerns that Wall Street's estimates along with EA's own guidance for full-year sales will prove overly optimistic. EA announced in October that it plans to haul approximately $4.05 to $4.20 billion in full-year net revenue.

The downgrade was a result of a range of factors, including lowered sales expectations for Dead Space 3, Crysis 3, Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel, SimCity, and Fuse, all of which are due during EA's fourth quarter.

Adding to the trouble, according to Bhatia, was Warfighter's "disappointing early performance," the cancellation of NBA Live 13 in September, and difficult comparisons to last year, which saw the release of the top-performing Battlefield 3. The analyst said EA would have been smart to lower its full-year sales expectations due to these factors.

D-Link reveals Gaming Router
Jan 7th 2013, 16:19

Network vendor reveals first 802.11ac-based routed specifically designed for gamers; intelligently appropriates bandwidth for connected devices.

Today during the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, network vendor D-Link announced a new router designed specifically for gamers. GameSpot sister site CNET reports that D-Link's new offering--called the Gaming Router (model DGL-5500)--is the first 802.11ac-based router built with gamers in mind.

The Gaming Router is the first on the market to support Qualcomm's new StreamBoost technology as well as the chipmaker's 802.11ac chip.

The StreamBoost technology allows the router to appropriate the required amount of Internet speed a connected device needs at a given time, instead of affording all attached devices the same amount of bandwidth.

With regard to design, D-Link's new Gaming Router is cylindrical. The device will be available by the end of spring 2013, with pricing information becoming available at a later date. For more on all things CES 2013, stay current with CNET's special event landing page.
