World of Tanks studio acquires F.E.A.R. 3 dev
Jan 29th 2013, 14:59

Wargaming buys Day 1 Studios for $20 million; now working on unannounced console game.

World of Tanks studio Wargaming today announced it had acquired F.E.A.R. 3 developer Day 1 Studios for $20 million and is putting the team to task on an unannounced console title. The company will be rebranded Wargaming West.

Wargaming is developer of numerous PC massively multiplayer online games, including World of Tanks, World of Warships, and World of Warplanes.

This marks Wargaming's first step effort in the console space. Platforms for the company's new console game were not announced, nor was a timetable for its release.

Wargaming West currently has a handful of open positions, including calls for an IT Administrator, a producer, and multiple part-time quality assurance staffers.

Day 1 was founded in 2001 by ex-FASA Interactive veteran Denny Thorley and Microsoft Game Studios' TJ Wagner. Out of the gate, the studio scored a hit with 2002's MechAssault for the original Xbox. After a MechAssault follow-up in 2004, the studio created the original property Fracture for LucasArts and then took over for Monolith on Warner Bros. Interactive's F.E.A.R. 3.

Epic Mickey studio in trouble?
Jan 29th 2013, 13:58

Sources say Junction Point staffers have been on paid leave for over one month with layoff news expected today.

Epic Mickey studio Junction Point may be in trouble. Multiple sources have confirmed to Kotaku that employees at the Austin, Texas-based studio have been on paid leave for more than a month now, with layoff news expected to be announced today.

Junction Point owner Disney has not yet commented on the rumor.

The news was sparked when Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts' studio Roberts Space Industries tweeted that Junction Point would be shut down entirely. The tweet has since been removed, with the company saying it has "no inside info on their status."

Industry veteran George Broussard also commented on the matter, saying, "The Junction Point rumors have been circulating a while. Warning signs when you give employees two months off after shipping."

Junction Point shipped Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two in November. The game was not a critical or commercial success for Disney, recording mediocre review scores and reportedly selling 270,000 copies in the United States by the end of 2012.

The Austin, Texas development scene has been in the spotlight of late. After finding no bidder in THQ's bankruptcy auction last week, Vigil Games was dissolved. Thirty-five of the Darksiders studio's employees, including cofounder David Adams, are now working at Crytek USA Corp. in Austin, Texas, which opened yesterday.

Industry has profited at expense of children, says CA senator
Jan 29th 2013, 13:26

Leland Yee again points finger at games industry, admits he "didn't use the best words" in recent interview.

California senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) has apologized for telling gamers to "quiet down" in a recent interview, but also again criticized the game industry for hurting children.

"Gamers, I admittedly didn't use best words to [The San Francisco Chronicle]," he said on Twitter (via Game Politics). "Meant video game industry has inherent conflict of interest in the gun violence debate."

The politician said he knows and has respect for many gamers, but again pointed the finger at the game industry for making profits at the cost of children's health.

"I have a lot of respect for many gamers, " he added. "Many are on my staff and in my family--but the industry has profited at the expense of children."

Yee said last week that gamers have "no credibility" in the discussion surrounding violent video games. He said it is "all about their lust for violence and the industry's lust for money."

Yee is not the only politician taking aim at the game industry following December's deadly shooting in Newton, Conn. that left 20 children and six adults dead. Politicians in Washington, DC, as well as President Obama himself, have put forth legislation and orders aimed at examining violent entertainment and what role it may play in real-world violence.

Jan 29th 2013, 12:09

Enigmatic new teaser hints at Friday announcement.

PlayStation owner Sony has released a teaser trailer called Game Day 2013.

The sixteen second video shows a woman walking through countryside as ash rains from the sky, and ends on a shot of an eye opening before displaying a date: February 1, 2013.

There's a touch of God of War about the trailer -- and Sony's marketing campaign for Kratos' latest adventure is kicking into full gear -- but Sony could also be looking to surprise with one of the first new game announcements of 2013.

You can watch the teaser below:

Rockstar finds the idea of a sci-fi GTA 'very tempting'
Jan 29th 2013, 12:01

A sci-fi setting for GTA is "tempting", says Rockstar, but the developer would need "a good reason" to do so first.

Rockstar vice president Dan Houser has said the idea of a sci-fi themed open-world is "very tempting", but that the studio first needs to find "a good reason" to do so.

When asked if the GTA franchise would ever leave its contemporary time period by French website Ecrans (translated by OXM), the GTA scribe and lead writer on Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3 said Rockstar would do so "the very second we have an idea."

"One of our strengths is the consistency of the game world," added Houser. "We're not necessarily the best writers in the world, but we know how to write a video game."

Looking back to Rockstar's enormous success with Red Dead Redemption, Houser said Rockstar chose the Western setting "because we knew we had something to say."

"We have no interest in going into science fiction for the sake of flying cars and laser guns," he added.

What's holding Rockstar back, then, is that it doesn't yet have the right story to tell. "The best science fiction stories are those that speak about the human condition. So while this idea is very tempting and, by definition, anything's possible in a videogame, we lack the essential thing for the moment: a good reason."

Rockstar's latest title, the upcoming Grand Theft Auto V, is scheduled for a spring 2013 release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. PC and Wii U versions are being considered.
