Disney Infinity

It is a rare thing in any entertainment industry for a major success to go ignored by the industry at large. That's why it comes as no surprise to see a new videogame so strongly resemble Skylanders -- one where physical action figures are placed on a stand to make them appear in-game -- without the Skylanders or Activision name appearing anywhere. Because make no mistake about it: Skylanders is a veritable success, having earned $500 million in sales in the United States alone since its launch in October 2011. So while it shouldn't take anyone aback to see a game like Disney Infinity that seems to have taken more than a little inspiration from Skylanders, what is unexpected is just how much it expands on that formula in an exciting way.

At their core, there is no denying the similarities between Infinity and Skylanders. Infinity is a multiplatform game scheduled for release this June on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, Wii, and 3DS, Vita being the notable exception as even iOS will be getting a companion app that extends the game in certain ways to phones and tablets. No matter the platform, it will come with a base upon which you'll be able to place specially designed action figures that spawn the represented Disney character in the game. The base and a few characters come with the game for $75, and additional figurines will be sold separately for $13 each, according to Wired. Easy as it would be to write it off as "Disney Skylanders" because of all this, that would be unfairly reductionistic and a disservice to what Disney Interactive and developer Avalanche Software are aspiring for.

The Definitives: Six Remakes That Left the Originals in the Dust

When tweaking a game helps it reach its pinnacle.

The definitive version.

It's a phrase that you've probably heard hundreds of times through reviews and previews. It's an easy way for writers to distill a truly great collection or remake into terms that people will immediately understand. It's definitive; it's the only version you should be playing.

thumbnail What Do You Think of the Cyberpunk 2077 Teaser Trailer?

Spot

Is it ever too early to begin hyping up a game? Well, the folks at CD Projekt RED certainly don't believe so. The Polish developers have unveiled their follow-up to the wildly successful Witcher titles, and it's taken a turn in a decidedly futuristic direction. Cyberpunk 2077 is an RPG based on pen-and-paper games of the same name. While the teaser certainly looks nice (look at all of those graphics!), it leaves me with a few questions regarding video game trailers, hype, and the harm that could possibly stem from revealing a game too early.

Cyberpunk's teaser revolves around a half-naked woman, Woo-ian slow motion, and a liberal amount of bullets. Kind of the standard in our industry, huh? Throughout the trailer, it's revealed the future police have apprehended a woman who has just committed quite a bit of genocide via blades that come out of her forearms. Yep, that old chestnut. While I'm admittedly ignorant of the source material, there's not a whole lot here that tells me why I should be excited to play this game a few years from now. Don't get me wrong, The Witcher 2 goes overlooked far too often when people think about the premiere RPGs of this generation, and the prospect of those mechanics transitioning over into the genre-defining world of the pen-and-paper game sounds great. But does the teaser really reflect any of this whatsoever?
