Crytek talks Homefront 2
Jan 28th 2013, 17:19

Studio general manager says development on upcoming shooter unaffected by recent hand-over, though release date may change.

Homefront 2 is "coming along so well," Crytek general manager Nick Button-Brown told VG247 in a new interview. Discussing the company's recent purchase of the franchise for $544,000 during last week's THQ bankruptcy auction, Button-Brown assured fans that development on the game has not been affected, though its release date may change.

“Crytek“s focus is fairly similar to THQ“s, namely to make the best game possible, so this will not have too much impact on the development itself," Button-Brown said. "However, we might change the release date that we haven“t announced, and move this to another release date we won“t announce yet either.“

Homefront 2 was announced in September 2011 for release on home consoles and PC by March 2014.

Button-Brown added that its prime reason for purchasing the Homefront IP was because the game is "coming along so well." He said the team at Crytek UK is putting their "heart and soul into the game," noting the most recent milestone check was "excellent."

“The worst case scenario for us was that this situation meant that all that work just ended up being thrown into the bin, so we wanted to buy the IP to make sure the team can finish off the game they wish to make," Button-Brown said. "But we always have and will believe in the potential of the IP. This is why we agreed to work on it in the first place, so it“s now beneficial for us to have control over the IP“s destiny.“

News on Homefront 2 is expected "soon," Button-Brown said. He added that because Crytek is no longer working with a publisher, the company should be able to be more transparent regarding the game's ongoing development.

Button-Brown also addressed the closure of THQ, saying Crytek had a positive relationship with the now-defunct publisher.

“Our experience with them was really good. They were a good partner and through to the end they always treated us with respect and honesty," he said. "We are very sorry to see them go and really feel for our friends on the THQ side who are now out of a job.“

The original Homefront was developed at the now-shuttered Kaos Studios. For more on that title, check out GameSpot's review.

Why Tomb Raider skipped Wii U
Jan 28th 2013, 16:27

Creative director says upcoming action game not coming to Nintendo system due to ambition to deliver same experience across platforms.

Crystal Dynamics has explained why Tomb Raider is not coming to Wii U. Creative director Noah Hughes told TrueGaming that the system's unique interface did not align with the company's goal to deliver the same experience across all versions.

"I'm always a fan of the Nintendo systems, in particular they really push interface design, and from a game design perspective it's fun to play with new interfaces," Hughes said. "Having said that, it's something that I think we would want to tailor the experience to if we were going to do it."

"All three [other console and PC versions] are really trying to deliver roughly the same experience, but delivered best on each platform, and I think something like the Wii U often asks you to do something unique based on a unique interface," Hughes added. "That's something as a gamer I love, but it's something you don't want to do half-heartedly as a developer."

Tomb Raider is due out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC March 5. It is the first entry in the long-running franchise to feature a multiplayer component, which will include various game modes. No online pass, downloadable content season pass, or demo will be offered for the game.

Tomb Raider's main character--Lara Croft--is voiced by Camilla Luddington, whose previous credits include Californication and True Blood, among other shows. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Tomb Raider.

EA predicts Ravens win Super Bowl XLVII
Jan 28th 2013, 15:18

Publisher's latest Super Bowl prediction says Baltimore Ravens beat San Francisco 49ers 27-24 on fourth quarter 40-yard field goal.

If Electronic Arts' latest Super Bowl prediction is right, the Baltimore Ravens will defeat the San Francisco 49ers this weekend 27-24 to claim the Lombardi Trophy for Super Bowl XLVII.

According to the simulation (available below), Ravens' rookie kicker Justin Tucker made a 40-yard field goal to put the team up 27-24 in the fourth quarter.

The 49ers made a final attempt to stay undefeated in Super Bowl appearances, but an Ed Reed interception from Colin Kaepernick with ten seconds to go sealed the deal for the Ravens.

The EA Sports Super Bowl prediction has been accurate in the NFL's most momentous game for seven of the last nine Super Bowls. The simulation was two points away from predicting the exact score of the 2009 Super Bowl XLIII matchup between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals.

Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: GO get major ESL tournament backing
Jan 28th 2013, 15:00

Prize pot for new competition sits at $300,000 -- the most money a gaming league has put up for Dota 2 and CS:GO.

Valve“s Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will be the featured games of the Electronic Sports League“s new EMS One competition, with over $300,000 available in 2013 for Europe“s best gamers. This will be the most amount of money any gaming league has put up for these two titles thus far.

Dota 2 and CS:GO will each have four seasons with four live event finals over the course of the year. The top eight teams at the end of each season will meet at the offline season finals. The first event is being aimed for mid-April, with each game played on a separate weekend, EMS Product Manager Lari Syrota told GameSpot.

“The EMS One will feature an extensive online season with multiple matches throughout the week, contrary to consisting of a series of large-scale offline events“, Syrota said. “We believe that this model will be more beneficial to CS:GO and Dota 2 because it facilitates the growth of these scenes.“

ESL“s largest tournament brand, the Intel Extreme Masters, currently feature StarCraft 2 and League of Legends for its seventh season. This season was the first that Counter-Strike was not a featured title, and the Dota series has never been chosen before.

“Counter-Strike: GO and Dota 2 were obvious choices“, Syrota said. “CS:GO has a strong heritage in esports, with many of the star players from the old days as well as ambitious newcomers creating a very compelling competitive environment. Yet, it lacked a strong backbone so far, and this is where we come into play. Dota 2, on the other hand, is the successor of the MOBA pioneer, and its increasing popularity proves that it deserves attention from the world of eSports.“

Matches will be played and broadcasted online every week without breaks, with broadcasters Joe Miller and Paul “Redeye“ Chaloner behind the microphone.

Details regarding the first teams invited, and how many weeks the season is, will be announced tomorrow on ESL“s homepage.

Early access to GoW: Judgment OverRun mode for GameStop preorders
Jan 28th 2013, 14:43

Gamers with PowerUp Rewards membership who reserve upcoming Gears of War title get three-day headstart in new class-based game mode.

Gears of War: Judgment is due out March 19, but not all will need to wait until that day to play the newest entry in the series. Those with a GameStop PowerUp Rewards membership who preorder the title online or in-store will have early access to the game's new OverRun mode, it was announced today.

A GameStop PowerUp Rewards membership is free.

The "early access experience" begins Friday, March 15 at 11:59 p.m. PDT and runs through Monday, March 18 at 11:59 p.m. PDT. In addition, the offer retroactively applies to all members who had previously preordered Judgment at GameStop.

Judgment's OverRun mode is the first class-based, multiplayer gametype in the Gears of War series. It pits Locust and COG soldiers against each other in a head-to-head, objective-based battle for five-player teams.

What's more, multiplayer experience points earned during the early access period will carry over to the final game for those who purchase Judgment in the first week. Additionally, those who preorder Judgment from GameStop will receive a Young Marcus character skin and a Lambent weapon skin.

A demo for Judgment will be made available to all Xbox Live Gold members worldwide March 19. For more on Judgment, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

New GTA V artwork shows a motorbike and a bank job
Jan 28th 2013, 14:23

New Grand Theft Auto V artwork arrives as part of a preorder campaign at US retailer GameStop.

Two new bits of Grand Theft Auto V artwork have surfaced, with the pictures framing a preorder campaign set to launch in US retailer GameStop.

The two pictures, spotted by GTAV.net, could potentially be of repo man Franklin and back-in-the-game bank robber Michael. GTA V will feature a third character, Trevor, in its triumvirate campaign that will allow players to switch between all three leads between missions.

Rockstar has said it plans to launch the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of GTA V sometime in Spring 2013.

PC and Wii U versions are also being considered, says the publisher.

Chinese console ban may end - Report
Jan 28th 2013, 14:21

Sony and Nintendo shares rise on report claiming country may lift 12-year ban on game consoles.

China's 12-year console ban could be lifted. The state-run China Daily (via Bloomberg) reports that the country's Ministry of Culture is holding discussions to consider ending the ban on game consoles it enacted in 2000.

The country originally decided to ban consoles over concerns about potential harm to physical and mental development of children.

According to the report, the seven Chinese ministries that originally introduced the console ban in 2000 would need to agree to end it.

The news sat well with investors, as Sony and Nintendo shares rose in Tokyo 9.1 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively. Microsoft is not listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

Representatives from Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft were not immediately available to comment.

Gabe Newell and J.J. Abrams to host storytelling keynote at DICE
Jan 28th 2013, 13:58

Valve co-founder and Star Trek director to open DICE summit with keynote.

Gabe Newell and J.J. Abrams will helm the opening keynote at next week's D.I.C.E. Summit. The Valve co-founder and Star Trek director will present “Storytelling Across Platforms: Who Benefits Most, the Audience or the Player?" on the show's first morning.

Newell will also host a keynote on Thursday titled “A View on Next Steps,“ which will detail the Valve mastermind's thoughts on where the games industry is heading and the kind of advances Valve is making. The company recently announced a partnership with PC maker Xi3 to develop its own take on the long-rumoured Steam Box.

"J.J. thoughtfully weaves together suspense, action, emotion, and fun into every one of his projects -- elements every game developer aspires to capture as well," said Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences president Martin Rae.

Abrams' latest film, Star Trek: Into Darkness, will be released in May. He's also been lined up to direct the next Star Wars film.

"Each year, the D.I.C.E. Summit sets the tone for the year ahead in games and adding J.J. and Gabe“s shared insights is a natural fit as we see all forms of entertainment converge,“ added Rae.

The D.I.C.E. Summit will take place in Las Vegas from February 5 to 8.
