Bungie says Destiny can sit alongside Star Wars, Lord of the Rings Aug 26th 2013, 18:35 COO Pete Parsons says studio wants people to put new series on same shelf as major fantasy and sci-fi franchises, game has potential to surpass impact of Halo.
Bungie is shooting for the stars with its upcoming online shooter Destiny. COO Pete Parsons told GamesIndustry International in an interview that the new fantasy series has the potential to surpass the impact of Halo and sit on people's shelves next to established entertainment juggernauts. "We like to tell big stories and we want people to put the Destiny universe on the same shelf they put Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, or Star Wars; we've already seen they do that with Halo," Parsons said. "We were extremely proud of what we achieved with Halo… I'm pretty convinced we are going to do it again with Destiny in a way that maybe even Halo never achieved before." Parsons said publisher Activision believes in Bungie's vision for Destiny. He said, "these guys know big entertainment as well. They prove it over and over again." Overall, Parsons said the pieces are in place for Destiny to be able to go head-to-head with almost any other form of entertainment. "We've always admired people like Pixar, and we are finally in that moment where we have this raw, amazing talent that I think rivals entertainment creators anywhere across any entertainment ever, and Activision is helping us bring that reality to life," Parsons said. Destiny launches in 2014 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. For more, check out GameSpot's interview with community manager Eric Osborne. Electronic Arts is moving away from offline games, COO Peter Moore has told Engadget in a new interview from Gamescom. "We're seeing more and more of the online experience being part-and-parcel of every game. We don't ship a game at EA that is offline; just doesn't happen," Moore said. Moore explained that gamers want to be connected for a variety of purposes, including keeping tabs on in-game statistics and achievements, as well as playing online multiplayer. "So yeah, we don't deliver offline experiences any more." Also in the interview, Moore said free-to-play options will be coming to every major EA franchise in the time ahead. "The ability for you to be able to interact with those franchises on a free-to-play basis is going to be part-and-parcel with every major franchise we do now," Moore said. "And that's very important to Electronic Arts." Some of EA's biggest franchises include Star Wars, Battlefield, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Command & Conquer, Madden, and The Sims, among others. A new Xbox Live update launched today converts Microsoft Points to real-world currency determined by a user's geographic location. The next time users initiate a purchase or redeem a Microsoft Points card or code on their console, Microsoft will add to their account an amount of local currency equal or greater than the value of their Microsoft Points. The currency added to accounts at the time of this transition will expire on June 1, 2015, Microsoft said. Currency purchased and added to an account after the transition will not expire. More information about the change is available through an official FAQ. The transition was announced during Microsoft's Electronic Entertainment Expo briefing in June. Earlier this month, Microsoft explained the reasoning behind the update. "This change was a direct result of customer feedback," chief product officer Marc Whitten said at the time. "You told us you want to be able to buy things using money instead of points, and we listened." Microsoft points had been in place since the inception of Xbox Live and have not been without criticism. Rather than using real-world currency, Microsoft adopted its own system, where 400 Microsoft points is equivalent to $5. Further, Microsoft sold point packs only in multiples of 400, often leaving gamers with excess points after purchasing content they want. Rockstar Games today announced details regarding the various digital bonuses players will have access to if they pick up the $80 Grand Theft Auto V special edition or $150 collector's edition. Both versions will give players access to additional weapons, including the .50 Caliber Pistol and the Bullup Shotgun, as well as the Hammer, described as a "brutal melee weapon." The GTAV special edition and collector's edition will also feature bonus outfits and tattoos, and will receive a 20 percent discount at any related shop in Los Santos and Blaine County. Those who own the Collector's Edition of GTAV will receive various custom characters for Grand Theft Auto Online, including Grand Theft Auto IV protagonist Niko Bellic and Claude and Misty from Grand Theft Auto III. These players can be used as "parent options" in the online mode's character creation system. For GTA Online, Rockstar Games has tweaked the traditional character creation system, opting for a hereditary-based creation system instead. Players will choose their character's appearance by selecting their parent's heritage, then use a gene dominance meter to "dial-in which parent your appearance favors more." Gamers who own one of the GTAV premium bundles will also have access to special ability boosts for Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. Michael's special ability allows him to slow down time during gunfights, while Franklin's lets him slow down time during driving sequences. Trevor's special ability sends him into a rage, causing double damage while taking only half when hit. With the boosts applied, the Special Ability bar will generate 25 percent faster. Lastly, both premium GTAV bundles also unlock stunt plane trials in Los Santos and Blaine County, while the collector's edition will feature an exclusive garage to store custom vehicles. It will come pre-stocked with the CarbonRS sports bike and the Hotknife hotrod. In GTA Online, these players will have access to the Khamelion electric car. GTAV launches September 17 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Sony this weekend apologized to Rockstar Games over the recent PlayStation 3 pre-load leak, which exposed various details about the game.
