Trion Worlds closing UK office Aug 15th 2013, 17:56 Defiance and Rift company shutting down publishing office in Guildford, UK; 12 non-development jobs lost as a result.
Less than a week after Trion Worlds announced it would close its San Diego studio, the company confirmed today that it will shut down its European publishing office in Guildford, UK. 12 jobs will be cut as a result, though a Trion Worlds representative said no one attached to development, customer service, or localization was affected. "As part of its recent company realignment, Trion's European publishing office based in Guildford, UK, will be closing down," the company said. "European localized versions of Trion’s live and upcoming games will not be affected as all regional game development and support continues from Redwood City, CA." In an email to Trion Worlds last week, new CEO Scott Hartsman said, "We're going to rapidly be laying the groundwork for a new strategy for Trion--one that's closer to the foundation of how we've had our wins so far, and then extending that base into the enduring success this company can, and will, be." Trion Worlds operates Defiance and a Rift, among others. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg is not worried about Call of Duty: Ghosts preorder figures being "well below" from those of Call of Duty: Black Ops II. In an interview with Joystiq, Hirshberg said the downturn in preorder numbers for the new game are in line with what the company saw during the past console transition. More uncertainty exists now because consumers are not sure if they're going to upgrade from current- to next-generation consoles or what platforms their friends may be on. This all leads to lower initial preorder numbers, but is nothing to be alarmed by, Hirshberg said. "Actually, if you look statistically at past console transitions, it's the biggest franchises that have actually fared the best through the transition," he said. Despite this historical model to go by, Hirshberg said Activision's only goal is to deliver a compelling product in Call of Duty: Ghosts this fall. "We're not taking anything for granted. I don't care about that statistical analysis," Hirshberg said. "What works for us year in and year out is making a great game and providing our fans with an awesome experience; with the right balance between making the game that everyone knows and loves, but that has a lot of new ideas and a lot of fresh thinking in it so that you want to come and experience it and play it." Activision and Infinity Ward took the wraps of the multiplayer mode for Call of Duty: Ghosts during a Los Angeles event yesterday. The game mode is described as the most significant overhaul since 2007's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Call of Duty: Ghosts launches November 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, and PC. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will release later. All downloadable content for the game will be available first on Xbox platforms. Kalypso Media today announced Tropico 5, the latest entry in the long-running city-building series. The game will release in 2014 on Xbox 360, PC, Mac, and Linux and is in development at Bulgarian outfit Haemimont Studios. Tropico 5 will see the return of main character El Presidente and is said to include a "whole host" of new gameplay features that take the series in a new direction with a new Dynasties feature. Gamers can appoint members if their extended family to leadership positions, like ambassador or supreme ruler, earning skills and experience along the way. As El Presidente, players will control the island of Tropico during early colonial times and then guide it through the ensuing centuries. Players must survive both World Wars, the Great Depression, and Cold War, modern times, and beyond. Tropico 5 is set between the 19th and 21st centuries and features a themed art style to match specific moments in time. The game also introduces a series-first cooperative and competitive multiplayer mode for up to four players, though no further details were provided. The most recent entry in the island adventure series was 2011's Tropico 4, which arrived first on PC before later coming to Xbox 360. An expansion--Modern Times--arrived in early 2012 and featured a new campaign set after the main game. According to Half-Life series voice actor John Patrick Lowrie, Valve's long-awaited Half-Life 3 is not in development. Writing in the comments of his personal blog (via NeoGAF), Lowrie said issues with motion-capture, among others, are keeping the game back. "One of the great things about HL2 is that all of the characters that you meet actually look at you when they talk to you no matter where you go or stand. With mo-cap you can’t do that, at least not yet," Lowrie said. "Once you film the actor doing something and capture that motion, that’s what the character is going to do," he added. "This works great in movies, but when you make something interactive it gets way less interactive with mo-cap. So that’s one of the things they’re working on." Responding to a comment of "HL3 confirmed," Lowrie poured cold water on that notion, saying, "Sorry, I'm afraid that the opposite is true. HL3 is not being worked on at this time as far as I know." Lowrie added that Valve is "pretty full up" with its existing portfolio of titles that it continues to support, as well as the Steam distribution platform. "So, I don't want to get people's hopes up," he said. "I have no idea what they're planning for the future. But I did have that conversation with some Valve folks, so I thought you might like to know what they're thinking about." Last April, Valve boss Gabe Newell said the studio had gone through numerous "twists and turns" to bring the game to market. He explained that Valve's silence is in the best interest of gamers because elaborating on the game's development "would probably drive people more crazy." The most recent Half-Life game was 2007's Half-Life 2: Episode Two. That game advances the story of previous entries Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode One. A third episode was planned, but has not seen the light of day. A listing for Half-Life 3 was recently spotted in a Valve project tracker.
