Quake Champion crowned at QuakeCon Aug 6th 2013, 17:59 American Quake Champion Shane "Rapha" Hendrixson wins Quake Live 1v1 tourament, beating Russian favorite Sergey "Evil" Orekhov and taking home $9,000.
American Quake Champion Shane "Rapha" Hendrixson from SK Gaming won the Quake Live 1v1 QuakeCon 2013 Championships and $9,000 in a thrilling five game final over Russian favorite Sergey "Evil" Orekhov. Going into QuakeCon, all eyes were on Orehkov coming off a championship run himself over Hendrixson at DreamHack's Winter 2012 event. He was making his first appearance at QuakeCon, and had never lost to Hendrixson before in LAN competition. After DreamHack, Orekhov was quoted as saying Hendrixson "plays very standard, dry game, without special aggressive moves or focus on specific weapon(s)" and that he was "very predictable" against the elite players. Hendrixson has been coming off a rather unsuccessful competitive run in Ubisoft's Shootmania with SK Gaming. After the loss to Orehkov at DreamHack, Hendrixson said that his time spent playing Shootmania did affect his readiness for the finals. This weekend, he told GameSpot before the event that although Orekhov was the favorite, he was "not going to worry about how he's playing or anyone else," and would focus on his own play throughout the weekend. Hendrixson tells GameSpot that's just what he did. "Most definitely I knew that if he made the finals it was going to be one of the most difficult ones I've ever had to win and it sure proved to be that way," Hendrixson said. "I had to play at my best because his shape right now is just insane. The amount of damage he can output compared to other players is just on another level." "I think I was able to overcome him this time because I myself was playing better. The LAN conditions felt amazing this year. Part of it also is I started to pickup on subtle things that I needed to be more aware of or could exploit in his game and it definitely helped out. Every game was still super tough regardless of my shape being at a very high level at this event." Video of the Grand Finals between Hendrixson and Orehkov can be watched on QuakeCon's Twitch channel. [ Watch Video ] Hendrixson stopped Orehkov's unbeaten streak against him earlier in the tournament, earning him a one map lead going in the grand finals. Orehkov's victory over Evil Geniuses' Tim "DaHanG" Fogarty in the losers bracket earned him another shot at Hendrixson. The advantage for Hendrixson in the finals was not only a one map lead, but also the removal of Orehkov's best map, the traditional Russian Quake favorite of Blood Run by ZTN. Orehkov wouldn't be deterred, winning the next two maps including an Overtime thriller to put him on tournament point. Back up against the wall, Hendrixson played to his strengths. "I just kept my cool though and reminded myself 'hey you've been in this spot before,'" he said. "There's no reason to feel down or let pressure get to you. I can't do anything about the previous games anyway." Hendrixson was faced with Lost World, a map he had already lost to Orehkov twice during the weekend already. Fans were treated to an incredibly tense scoreless stalemate for nearly eight minutes, with both players trading blows with the rocket launcher and lightning gun. Orehkov was close to breakthrough and the title by trapping Hendrixson by the megahealth when Hendrixson pulled out a perfect rocket to send Orehkov into the lava, and the first frag of the game. Hendrixson held onto a one-kill lead the final minute of the game against an aggressive Orehkov, barely squeaking out a win and his hopes alive. "Of course when you're down to your do or die map you're a little worried. Especially since he had beaten me on Lost World twice during the tournament already," Hendrixson said about hanging on. "So I was just trying to solely focus on that one game to give myself a chance to hopefully win it all on toxicity." [ Watch Video ] "With such a long time on where I couldn't get a frag, I was just doing everything in my power to keep calm and just keep thinking as sharp as possible because I knew that once I finally found that one in I would need to execute to perfection. He somehow spawned near the lightning gun when it was 2-0 and then snuck up on me and gave him an in back into the game. The only positive thing about him getting that kill was that I dealt a ton of damage so it allowed me to get some items and weapons right away to defend and waste more time. And I managed to somehow pull it off." Hendrixson would go on to take a convincing final map to end it. Hendrixson has now won at QuakeCon three times, and has his name etched on a dozen major Quake 3 and Quake Live trophies from around the world. He's now tied in QuakeCon wins with his longtime rival Alexey "Cypher" Yashunevsky, and his inspiration to start competing in Quake when he was younger, John "ZeRo4" Hill. Hill was eliminated by Orehkov, while Yanushevsky was not able to attend due to sponsor issues. "Winning a third title now does mean a lot to me considering that John is my friend, someone I looked up to as a player for a long time and was the one who helped give me the little push I needed to start being able to win," Hendrixson said. "So to have that same accomplishment as him is nice to have. As with Cypher almost every tourney we go to I want him to do very well also and we have a good friendly rivalry, neither of us gets bitter when losing to the other and now that I have three like him, the race is on to see who can get four." Hendrixson's legacy continues to be cemented as not only one of the best Quake players to ever play any of the games in the series, but one of the winningest players in all of competitive gaming and eSports. After the last two years of QuakeCon, he has hinted that he may stop playing competitively. That hasn't happened, and it doesn't seem like it will anytime soon. "I think I'll just look at it like 'hey, if I have the time to go play in a big tournament and can prepare for it, I will,'" he says, as DreamHack's 2013 Winter event looms in the distance with $15,000 in prize money. “"So I won't say that I'll 'retire'. I“'m going to always leave the door open. I've accomplished quite a bit in Quake, and to me I don't really look at it like 'okay, I've finally won this now I'm good.' I've always tried to take it one tournament at a time and I'm always looking to win and do more and I think it'll always be that way. If you don't look at it that way it's so difficult to win against someone who really wants it more than you." Irrational Games head Ken Levine has said he is excited about the effect technology like Google's Chromecast might have on video games in the future. Speaking in an interview with Eurogamer, Levine said the main differentiator between the next-generation consoles is their unique services. "From a hardware perspective, the PC and the Xbox and the PS4 are very much similar beasts in a lot of ways now," he said. "It's more about the software on top of it and the services they provide. "What I'm excited about--you saw that Google dongle that came out the other day?--is something like that for games." Google's Chromecast is a $35 HDMI peripheral that allows streaming of services like Netflix and the mirroring of computer screens. Sony has created a similar idea with its Remote Play interoperability between PlayStation 4 and Vita, and also acquired streaming technology Gaikai for $380m last year. One of the key principles of Nintendo's Wii U is also that users can play games on the screen when the television is in use. Levine thinks the experience of allowing people to play games anywhere is now more important than having one central device in the living room. "People want to talk about owning the living room. I don't think the living room matters that much any more," he said. "It's about wherever you want to game and having your experience. I'm not just saying playing an iPhone game, I'm saying having your game--your big, hardcore game--playing on whatever screen you wanted. "I think that kind of technology is going to be something that's really important for gamers, because you want to be able to pick up your experience and move it somewhere else." "The technology's there--it's actually very, very cheap," Levine said last week. "I'm just waiting for someone to do it, because letting gamers define their experience--how they play it, where they play it--that's where it's going. Gamer-driven experiences. That's what excites me." Call of Duty: Ghosts executive producer Mark Rubin wants all military shooters to be successful, including competing product Battlefield. Speaking with Games Industry International, the Infinity Ward executive producer said it isn't true that developers of competing brands are hostile towards each other, though marketing material does sometime portray this message. "It's less antagonistic, from a developer's side--sure marketing and stuff is all [about that] but on a developer's side it's like, 'Oh, did you see that stuff they're doing? That's so cool!' We could do something that's like this and that and we get excited about seeing that kind of stuff," Rubin said. "So from a developer's side, it definitely pushes us [to do better]. But it pushes us in a--I don't know if other studios feel this way--but I hope in a sort of camaraderie type sense," he added. "'Oh, those guys are doing awesome stuff. Let's jack up our game.' But not like two opposing teams. Rather, like the same team pushing in the same direction." Rubin explained that everyone in the industry wants gaming to be compelling, because "if gaming isn't good, then we all lose our jobs in a sense." "So for us, I think that the intellectual realization is we want everyone to be successful because if gaming is successful then we're all successful," Rubin said. Also in the interview, Rubin explained that Infinity Ward is currently building Call of Duty: Ghosts with 125 total internal developers, which makes the company "medium to small" by today's standards, he said. "If you look at most other studios they are around 300 or 400 people. We feel 125 is the culturally right number to be at," Rubin said. Call of Duty: Ghosts launches November 5 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are set to arrive later in the fall. Competitor Battlefield 4 releases a week earlier on October 29. One analyst believes both games can successfully coexist. Upcoming military shooter Arma III will release later this year without its campaign mode. Developer Bohemia Interactive announced today that instead, three batches of single-player content will be delivered as free downloadable expansions after release. The first episode, Survive, will be made available about a month after Arma III launches. The following expansions, Adapt and Win, will release "in the months thereafter." Just because Arma III won't have a campaign option at launch does not mean the game will be hurting for content. At launch, players will have access to the island terrains of Altis (270 km²) and Stratis (20 km²), 12 single-player missions, three faction showcases, nine multiplayer scenarios, 10 firing drill challenges, over 20 vehicles and 30 weapons, and modding support. "This was not a decision we made lightly," Arma III project lead Joris-Jan van 't Land said in a statement. "As game creators, we love developing and playing through campaigns so, to those awaiting ours, we say: sorry for the delay. After talking a lot about a focus on quality over the last year, it simply did not feel right to compromise now. Rather than pushing back the entire game, we launch this year with an awesome package--a splendid kick off for the Arma 3 experience." More information about Bohemia Interactive's decision to release Arma III without its campaign is available in a new developer blog post on the company's website. Arma III is scheduled to launch in the third quarter of 2013. A specific date is expected to be announced soon, Bohemia Interactive said. Gamers can participate in the game's beta today by purchasing the game from Steam and the Bohemia Interactive store for $44.99. The full Saints Row IV tracklist has been made available online, with details of the game's 109 songs and seven radio stations. The soundtrack was published on Complex Gaming, alongside an interview with Saints Row IV audio designer Brandon Bray, who added that the job of licensing and planning the licensed soundtrack was shared between publisher Deep Silver, developer Volition, and Los Angeles-based music production company Heavy Duty. Heavy Duty's Josh Kessler worked on developing the soundtrack for both Saints Row IV and its predecessor Saints Row: The Third, according to Bray. “It“s an interesting process because one, we“re privy to songs that may or may not have been released yet, and two, we need to make sure that what we're going to be licensing will be relevant by the time our game comes out,“ adds Bray.
