78.2 million Xbox 360s sold
Jul 22nd 2013, 18:39

Microsoft's current-generation system reaches new sales milestone since launch in 2005.

Microsoft sold 1 million Xbox 360s during the past three months, helping push worldwide life-to-date sales to 78.2 million, the company has revealed as part of its latest earnings report.

The 1 million systems sold during the quarter is down slightly from 1.1 million consoles sold during the same period last year.

By comparison, PlayStation 3 sales are estimated to be around 77 million units. Meanwhile, the original Wii has outpaced both platforms by a healthy margin, selling close to 100 million systems to date.

Microsoft's Xbox division posted $134 million in revenue (up 8 percent) for the period ended June 30. Xbox Live transactional revenue jumped 20 percent, the company said.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

Apple developer center hacked
Jul 22nd 2013, 18:27

[UPDATE] Turkish researcher claims responsibility.

[UPDATE] A Turkish security researcher, Ibrahim Balic, has claimed responsibility for the hack, according a report at The Guardian. Balic insisted that he perpetrated the hack to demonstrate that Apple's system was in fact leaking user information.

The original story is below.

Apple has taken down its developer website following a hacking attempt that potentially exposed names, physical mailing addresses, and email accounts.

In a statement on the site titled "We'll be back soon," Apple explained that this hacking attempt was detected on Thursday.

"Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers' names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed," the statement reads.

"In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then."

Apple explained that in order to prevent a similar security threat in the future, the company is "completely overhauling" its developer systems, updating server software, and rebuilding its entire database.

"We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon," the statement reads.

Developers with program memberships set to expire during the period will have their accounts extended, Apple said. No indication as to when the portal will reopen has been given.

Enter The Dominatrix will be first DLC for Saints Row IV
Jul 22nd 2013, 16:56

Volition reveals canceled Saints Row: The Third expansion coming to new game about 45 days after launch.

Enter The Dominatrix, the canceled expansion pack for Saints Row: The Third, will be the first downloadable content offering for Saints Row IV.

Volition creative director Steve Jaros revealed the news at a San Diego Comic-Con panel attended by Game Informer. Jaros said players can expect the content to launch about 45 days after Saints Row IV is released on August 20.

A price point for the Enter The Dominatrix DLC was not divulged.

Enter The Dominatrix would have been Saints Row: The Third's first stand-alone expansion, following multiple smaller downloadable content packs. It was set to follow on from the events of the main game with an alien abduction plot and the addition of superpowers.

GameStop is "taking everybody for a ride" says God of War dev
Jul 22nd 2013, 16:15

Ru Weerasuriya says retailers like GameStop should pay a cut of the revenue from preowned sales to publishers and developers.

The boss of God of War: Chains of Olympus and upcoming The Order: 1886 developer Ready at Dawn Studios has said retailers like GameStop are "taking everybody for a ride" with their preowned schemes.

"I think the problem is right now there are retail outlets that are really taking everybody for a ride," said Ru Weerasuriya in an interview with GamesIndustry International.

"You can't make a living at the expense of everybody else. Unfortunately, they're not just making a living at the expense of developers but also the consumers because the consumers will see less and less games come out if developers can't get revenue to make more new titles and keep going as a business," he said.

The debate over preowned games has flared up recently after support for reselling games became a major talking point surrounding Microsoft and Sony's next-generation consoles, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

"I think this is something we need to curb on the retail side," said Weerasuriya. "We're putting the consumers in an awkward spot and we shouldn't have to."

Unlike the PlayStation 4, Microsoft's initial plans for the Xbox One required users to check-in online every 24 hours and featured publisher-controlled support around each title's digital rights, though the plans were subsequently scrapped. "Why should [customers] be the ones to deal with a flawed system?" asked Weerasuriya. "They are the guys we do this for. They are the ones who should be able to benefit the most from being able to buy it."

Weerasuriya thinks that retailers should be required to give some of the revenue gained from preowned sales back to publishers and developers. "I don't think we should stop used games, but we should do something about getting part of the revenue back from GameStop and places like that."

Speaking about his own recent experience at a GameStop, Weerasuriya said "I walked into a GameStop, asked for a new copy of a game and without telling me he tried to slip me a used copy and wanted to sell it to me for $5 less. I flipped out in front of the guy. I was like, 'Dude, wrong guyü You're doing this to the wrong guy.' I don't think people realize, and the guy was trying to justify it to me. I was like, 'You have no idea.' There are developers out there who are making games for [years] and some of them will go down purely because the revenue stream is basically flawed and creating this place where developers don't see even a little part of it," he said.

Consumer group hopes to take Valve to court in 2013 over digital trade-ins
Jul 22nd 2013, 16:14

The Federation of German Consumer Organizations looking to challenge Valve's stance in digital trade-ins in court before the end of the year.

A German consumer organisation has confirmed that it intends to take Valve's digital distribution platform Steam to court before the end of the year.

The Federation of German Consumer Organizations, known as the VZVB, is seeking legal action regarding Steam's inability for its customers to resell bought software. The group previously announced its intentions to sue Valve back in February.

"Unfortunately a date of the trial is not fixed, we hope it will take place this year," said the Federation's representative Eva Hoffschulte (via Gaming Blend). "Until then, it is not realistic that Valve will change their policy."

Hoffschulte says that if the case reaches court then it is likely that Steam users would be able to trade in their games. "Our chance to win the process is very good and that will be really an improvement for consumers: then they can sell their games to others."

The VZVB adds that it is unaware of any current intentions by Valve to change its stance regarding users being able to resell games. "We have not checked the current directives, because first we have to finish our lawsuit against Valve. Over and above that we are not able to take action against Valve, because of our financial and personnel situation."

"We are aware of the press release about the lawsuit filed by the VZBV, but we have not yet seen the actual complaint," said Valve in February. "That said, we understand the complaint is somehow regarding the transferability of Steam accounts, despite the fact that this issue has already been ruled upon favorably to Valve in a prior case between Valve and the VZBV by the German supreme court. For now, we are continuing to extend the Steam services to gamers in Germany and around the world."

A judge previously ruled in 2010 that Valve refusing to allow users to trade-in their games did not violate German law.

Ratchet & Clank writer leaving Insomniac
Jul 22nd 2013, 16:12

Seven-year studio veteran T.J. Fixman leaving the company to pursue screenwriting.

Seven-year Insomniac Games writer T.J. Fixman has left the Ratchet & Clank studio to pursue a career in screenwriting, he announced through his blog recently.

Fixman explained that in the past year, he signed on to write for feature films like One Night on the Hudson and 2015's Ratchet & Clank movie and was recently offered feature assignments at Disney and New Line.

"Now I'm tallying up hours in the day and figuring out how I'd be able to get my pages done on time, and it became immediately clear it was time to make the leap," Fixman said.

Though Fixman has left Insomniac, he will remain producer on the Ratchet & Clank movie and said he has made sure the company has everything it needs for PlayStation 3 game Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus.

"My relationship with Insomniac will continue, as will my involvement with the video game industry," Fixman said. "How it will all coalesce is something I'll work out along the way, but I could never abandon the industry that has given me so much."

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus will launch this holiday season only on PS3.
