Honedge announced for Pokemon X and Y
Jul 5th 2013, 14:01

Players of the latest entry in the Pokemon series will be able to recruit a possessed sword.

The Pokemon Company has announced a new Ghost and Steel type Pokemon, Honedge, for upcoming handheld RPG Pokemon X and Y.

The new Pokemon was debuted by Game Freak director Junichi Masuda during the Japan Expo in Paris.

Honedge is a spirit that has possessed a sword, with a blue cloth attached to its hilt able to drain energy. The Pokemon can learn the attack Swords Dance, a Normal-type move that boosts a user's' Attack stat. The effect can be stacked multiple times.

Pokemon X and Y takes the series to the new Kalos region, and is the first Pokemon game to include a full 3D world and 3D battles. The game will be released for 3DS in October 2013.

Honedge joins new legendary Pokemon Xerneas and Yveltal in Pokemon X and Y, alongside the 17 previously announced roster of regular Pokemon: Chespin, Fennekin, Froakie, Sylveon, Pancham, Fletchling, Talonflame, Gogoat, Helioptile, Scatterbug, Spewpa, Vivillon, Noivern, Clauncher, Skrelp, Litleo, and Flabebe.

Sony never had any intention to block used games, says exec
Jul 5th 2013, 13:59

Sony president Andrew House says that the company never thought about blocking used games, but adds that there's a "very careful balance" to be had.

Sony Computer Entertainment president and group CEO Andrew House has said that the company never had any intention of introducing DRM policies to block used games with the upcoming PlayStation 4.

Questions about the PlayStation 4's policies towards game ownership started shortly after the machine was announced in February. "Dating from about our February event, there had been questions about what our online policy would be," said House in an interview with The Guardian (via Polygon).

While Microsoft initially tried to include measures restricting used game sales with the Xbox One, House said that Sony never had any intention to deviate from the traditional retail model. "I have to say that we were slightly perplexed, because we had no intention of changing from a model that I think has served us really well for several platform life-cycles."

The debate over used games and DRM has been one of the key themes surrounding the upcoming launch of the two next-generation consoles later this year, with Sony not clarifying its policies until its E3 2013 press conference. "Of course, it was really the actions of others, and the reaction coming from consumers, which led to more speculation. So we felt that with E3, and Monday night's press conference, it was a really good opportunity to set the record straight. But there weren't any changes that we'd been considering."

House said that he wasn't aware of any lobbying to include restrictions on used game sales from publishers like EA and Activision, either. "We didn't feel any sense that we needed to respond to any external pressure," he added.

The PlayStation executive also added that there's a "very careful balance" between game creators, customers, and retailers when it comes to the thorny issue of used sales. "We're a game publisher ourselves," said House, "so there's a certain argument for us that there should be something of a model for content-creators to participate in second sales."

"Having said that, however, the consumer sees ownership as a very key benefit when purchasing a physical product. And the flipside of the argument is that retailers will tell you that the vast majority of trade-in value gets immediately repurposed into new purchases of games, and those people in turn generate word of mouth and create more interest."

The Xbox One launches in November. Sony has yet to put a firm date on the PlayStation 4, but has assured customers it will be released before Christmas.

Save-corrupting Fez bug will finally be patched on Xbox 360
Jul 5th 2013, 09:53

Developer Phil Fish confirms that a new Fez patch is in the works, but that it might take a few months to be released.

The Xbox Live Arcade version of Fez will receive a patch to fix the game's save-corrupting bug, developer Phil Fish has announced.

"GOOD NEWS EVERYONE: we're going to patch FEZ on XBLA!" wrote the developer on Twitter.

In 2012, Fish opted to re-release a patch that corrupted a small percentage of users' save files because fixing the error would result in having to pay Microsoft tens of thousands of dollars to get the downloadable title certified through Microsoft's submission process.

"It's going to take a few months, though," added Fish, "but we're doing it!"

Microsoft revealed recently that it no longer charges developers tens of thousands of dollars to patch and re-certify their games on Xbox Live Arcade.

"We're not going to patch the patch," said Fish last year. "Why not? Because Microsoft would charge us tens of thousands of dollars to re-certify the game. And because, as it turns out, the save-file delete bug only happens to less than a percent of players. As a small independent, paying so much money for patches makes NO SENSE AT ALL, especially when you consider the alternative. Had Fez been released on Steam instead of XBLA, the game would have been fixed two weeks after release, at no cost to us."

Fish previously confirmed that the recently announced Fez II would not be coming to Xbox platforms.

EA considering offline mode for SimCity
Jul 5th 2013, 07:55

EA canvasing player feedback on offline mode and content for future expansion packs.

EA may be looking at the possibility of adding offline play and other features to SimCity as part of its future updates for its world-building series, according to a customer survey that has surfaced on Reddit.

The survey, which can be seen here in screenshots, seeks player feedback on potential upcoming features. These include: farms, faster rebuilding after disasters, over and underpass roads, cities twice the size of current land plots, terraforming, cooperative city building with friends, and Classic mode. The latter is described as allowing players to, “In offline or online mode, play a single, fully functioning city using cheats and unlocks that allow you to create your perfect city.“

Among other possible changes are four new additions to an upcoming expansion pack. Simulate to the Sky is described as adding the ability to build up instead of out to create SuperScrapers. Players will also be able to zone the new building type residential, commercial and industrial concurrently, as well as create multi-layered transportation, and improve overall city density to raise populations.

Greed cities add a resource-consuming mega corporation that boosts profits; a robotics augmentation business, and increases the total amount of trash and pollution produced. Conversely, green cities add an academy to research advanced technology, generate wealthy, highly-skilled workers, and your city will better collaborate with others on research.

The last component of the new expansion pack is called Transform Tomorrow. It will allow players to watch their cities change as future technologies are added, or see your region become affected by the actions of your future cities.

Launching to low review scores and server troubles, Maxis co-founder Will Wright described the game's initial release as being "inexcusable," for consumers, saying that both EA and Maxis failed to adequately communicate with players.

GameSpot contacted EA seeking clarification regarding the customer survey. A spokesperson from the publisher was unavailable at time of publication.

Blizzard exploring micro-transactions for World of Warcraft
Jul 5th 2013, 06:27

The World of Warcraft developer is exploring in-game purchases for unspecified regions; Enduring Elixir of Wisdom adds 100 percent experience gain increase.

Blizzard has confirmed that it is actively exploring in-game micro-transactions for its popular MMO, World of Warcraft.

The news comes after players discovered the Enduring Elixir of Wisdom on the game“s Public Test Realm (PTR). The item, which has not been added to live servers, grants players a 100 percent increase to all experience earned when killing monsters and completing quests.

A post on the game“s forums by Blizzard community manager Zarhym said the item is part of a larger experiment related to giving players in certain, unspecified regions the opportunity to purchase digital goods from within the game world.

“We are currently exploring the possibility of adding a way for players in certain regions to make purchases directly within the game. As part of this process, elements related to this will be appearing on the PTR. We“ll provide additional updates on our plans as development progresses.“

The company has previously made available a mixture of items through its Blizzard Store, including pets, mounts and an in-game Cinder Kitten, which saw all proceeds donated to help Hurricane Sandy victims.

Xbox One created 'with advertising in mind'
Jul 5th 2013, 06:15

Xbox Live advertising division staff say the Xbox One was built with ads in mind; advertisers to get limited access to Kinect features.

The Xbox One and its dashboard user interface were built with advertising in mind, key members of Microsoft“s UK Xbox Live Advertising team have told website StickTwiddlers on a recent visit to the company“s headquarters.

A two-hour discussion with the senior digital art director/user experience designer and technical account manager for Xbox Live advertising revealed that all advertising created for the platform must work with both a standard Xbox controller and the console“s mandatory Kinect camera system.

“With the new Xbox One, the technology and Kinect has improved a lot,“ said the technical account manager for Xbox Live Advertising, “so that actually, the voice recognition, the way you speak to your Xbox, and the transition between gaming and watching TV is a lot smoother, and hopefully we can transpire that into advertising that we do.

“Xbox is moving more outside of the bedroom. We“re seeing much, much more people use it in living rooms where there is family, friends, there is lots going on, so there is a context of perceiving the content,“ the senior digital art director/use experience designer said. “It“s not like when you“re at work, when you sit in front of a screen and your experience is very personal. But with Xbox, it“s lots of people in front of one big screen. They are playing or watching together, and advertising is being consumed in a totally different way.“

Microsoft hopes that the inclusion of Kinect with every Xbox One system will allow the company to better serve contextually relevant ads, and that integrating advertising material within content will make it less jarring.

“On Xbox, the ad is part of the actual experience, it“s not something that is outside. The only difference is that the advertisement we have is quite small and not disruptive, so people are not aware of clicking on the banners because they know this is a part of the whole experience on the dash,“ the senior digital art director revealed. “So the users know that this is something that when they click on it, they won“t be hit by something crazy or something dangerous like on the web. Everything that lands there, we create."

Microsoft's advertising team believes the upcoming Xbox One will allow advertising to evolve in line with the platform's gaming content.

“It“s going to be an exciting transition, though, because the 360 console wasn't built with advertising in mind, it was more of an afterthought, so we've had to adapt to the technology and how we work to fit them in to the console,“ said the Xbox Live advertising technical account manager.

Users concerned that the Xbox One and its Kinect camera may be collecting personal, identifying, or biometric information from the system should not be concerned, the team said.

“This sort of works at two levels. There“s the game producers, who have a different API, so a different set of code and system that they use, and they've got a lot more control of the whole thing,“ the developer commented, “whereas from the advertising point of view, we have a slightly more limited set, which is designed to protect the user. The company is very keen on protecting the user from any sort of abuse, so we can“t do certain things.“

Originally likened to a “monitoring device“ by Germany's federal data protection commissioner, Microsoft has attempted to allay consumer fears that its new home console will spy on its users. The company recently released official information on how the Kinect camera can be paused, which personal data the system will collect, and how it will be shared with third parties.
