Apple was EA's largest retail partner last quarter
Jul 23rd 2013, 21:59

COO Peter Moore says iPhone maker was publisher's biggest retailer partner for sales for the first time during June quarter.

Apple was Electronic Arts' "biggest retailer partner measured by sales" for the quarter ended June 30, a first for the company. EA COO Peter Moore revealed the news today during a post-earnings financial call, but did not provide any specific revenue numbers.

"Our quarter was notable for the high percentage of revenue attributable to digital games and services," Moore said. "To that end, Apple was EA's biggest retail partner measured by sales. And that is a first."

iOS game The Simpsons: Tapped Out posted its highest revenue quarter since launch in August 2012, while Real Racing 3 has been downloaded more than 45 million time to date. The game has 2 million daily active users, EA said.

Other high-profile EA iOS titles include various FIFA, Need for Speed, Madden, and Sims titles, as well as Plants vs. Zombies.

Overall, EA made $90 million from smartphone and tablet games during the quarter, though the company did not disclose how this figure breaks down between iOS and Android.

Apple sold 31 million iPhones in latest quarter
Jul 23rd 2013, 21:18

iPhone sales a record high for the June quarter, up from 26 million last year; iPad, Mac sales down; overall profit hits $6.9 billion.

Apple announced financial results for the quarter ended June 29 today, revealing it sold a record 31 million iPhones during the period, compared to 26 million this time last year.

The iPhone was the only winning product for Apple in the quarter. iPad sales hit 14.6 million for the period, down from 17 million this time last year. Meanwhile, Apple sold 3.8 million Macs during the quarter, a decrease from 4 million last year.

Overall, Apple posted quarterly revenue of $35.3 billion and a profit of $6.9 billion. These results compare to the same quarter last year when Apple revenue was $35 billion and profit hit $8.8 billion.

"We are especially proud of our record June quarter iPhone sales of over 31 million and the strong growth in revenue from iTunes, Software, and Services," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

"We are really excited about the upcoming releases of iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks, and we are laser-focused and working hard on some amazing new products that we will introduce in the fall and across 2014."

Battlefield 3 Premium sells 4 million
Jul 23rd 2013, 20:46

$50 subscription service reaches new user milestone; Origin membership climbs to 50 million; EA revenue for quarter hits $495 million.

Battlefield 3 Premium now has 4 million subscribers, publisher Electronic Arts announced today as part of its financial report for the first fiscal quarter ended June 30.

A subscription to Battlefield 3 Premium costs $50, meaning the service has now generated $200 million for EA. EA also announced that its Origin service now has 50 million users, including 22 million on mobile devices.

For the quarter, EA posted net income of $222 million on revenue of $495 million, up from $491 million during the same period last year. Of note, EA digital revenue for the period surpassed packaged revenue for the period by a healthy margin.

"EA had a solid quarter driven by continued digital growth and disciplined cost management," executive chairman Larry Probst said in a statement. "We are also executing on a clear set of goals for leadership on mobile, PC, current and next generation consoles."

The publisher also called out The Simpsons: Tapped Out as a top performer during the period, posting its highest revenue quarter since launch in August 2012. EA's mobile and handheld digital revenue was also a bright spot, rising 30 percent to $103 million.

Real Racing 3 has been downloaded more than 45 million times, EA said, and has averaged over 2 million daily active users since launch in March. FIFA 13 digital net revenue hit $70 million in the quarter, surging 92 percent versus FIFA 12.

EA also announced today that it had signed an agreement with TenCent to bring FIFA Online 3 to China. Further details about the agreement will be released in the near future.

EA will hold an earnings call beginning at 2 p.m. PDT to discuss results and answer questions. Check later for more.

Madden 25, FIFA 14 Ultimate Teams will carry over to Xbox One, PS4
Jul 23rd 2013, 20:04

Electronic Arts confirms players will be able to transfer Ultimate Team items between current- and next-gen consoles.

Gamers who purchase current- and next-generation versions of Madden NFL 25 and FIFA 14 will be able to transfer Ultimate Team items between the two generations, EA Sports has confirmed.

Ultimate Team is a game mode that allows players to create a fantasy team with virtual trading cards based on real-life players.

Madden Ultimate Team users on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 can perform a onetime transfer of up to 1,100 items to the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, EA Sports said. This includes 100 active items (55 players, 45 additional items) and up to 1,000 reserves.

All transferred items can still be used on the Xbox 360 or PS3 following the upgrade, though items cannot be traded or auctioned more than once. In addition, the carry-over only applies to those upgrading from the PS3 to the PS4 and the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One. No other combination is supported.

For FIFA 14, players will be able to access their full FIFA 14 Ultimate Team roster, in-game items, and in-game currency from either console. In addition, all changes made in FIFA 14 Ultimate Team will be reflected in both consoles, EA said.

On top of that, players who begin their FIFA 14 Ultimate Team experience on current-generation consoles will be able to maintain their division in Seasons mode on the new systems. Both versions of FIFA 14 will also share a common auction market, EA said, allowing players on next-generation consoles to interact with the current-generation players.

Madden NFL 25 launches on August 27 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, while FIFA 14 arrives September 24. The Xbox One and PS4 will be released this holiday.

Final Aliens: Colonial Marines DLC out now
Jul 23rd 2013, 19:18

$10 single-player Stasis Interrupted expansion tells the story of what happened to Hicks between Aliens and Alien 3.

Sega today launched the final expansion pack for Aliens: Colonial Marines. As was rumored, the single-player content is titled Stasis Interrupted. It tells the story of what happened to Corporal Hicks between Aliens and Alien 3.

During Stasis Interrupted, gamers will play as three different characters through an "interlocking" story. Players must fight their way through an alien-infested spaceship to find what Michael Weyland is after in the process of discovering what actually happened to Hicks.

Players who already own the Aliens: Colonial Marines Season Pass are urged not to purchase the $10 Stasis Interrupted pack, because they will be charged twice.

Aliens: Colonial Marines launched in February to a fairly negative critical reception, but this did not keep the game from shipping 1.31 million copies to date. The Wii U version of the game was later canceled and a false advertising lawsuit launched against Sega and Gearbox Software.

Future of Castlevania series unclear, says Konami
Jul 23rd 2013, 18:44

Producer Dave Cox says what happens with series after Lords of Shadow 2 is not decided; confirms MercurySteam has moved to an all-new IP.

The future of the Castlevania series, beyond this winter's Lords of Shadow 2, has yet to be decided, according to series producer Dave Cox.

"What happens with Castlevania after [Lords of Shadow] is not clear, but we hope to leave it in the best of health for those who come after us," Cox said on Twitter.

Clarifying comments he made during San Diego Comic-Con, Cox confirmed that MercurySteam will not develop a new Castlevania game, but rather an all-new IP, potentially for next-generation systems.

"When I said we are done with Castlevania, it's because we want to move forward with MercurySteam on a new project in a new universe," he said.

If the Castlevania series does move forward, Cox said he believes it is time for "somebody younger; a younger producer to come in and take up the mantle," though no studios were named outright.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 launches this winter for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
