Ubisoft announces Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame for mobile
Jul 3rd 2013, 16:38

New Prince of Persia game will be released for iOS and Android devices and is set 10 years after the original game.

Ubisoft has announced a new Prince of Persia game for mobile devices.

Prince of Persia: The Shadow and Flame is set a decade after the original Prince of Persia game, which was released back in 1993. Ubisoft re-released a new 3D version of the game as Prince of Persia Classic in 2007.

The new game retains the 2D platforming elements of the original game, but with more combat-focused elements, such as multiple enemies and a combo system. Both virtual joystick and touch-based control schemes are available.

"The game’s experience can still be extended through social connectivity, allowing you to unlock achievements and ascend the leaderboards or share scores with Facebook integration," adds Ubisoft.

Earlier this year, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat said that a new entry in the Prince of Persia series for consoles is currently on hold. "I think it is fair to say that, right now, Prince of Persia is being paused. But we said the same thing for some other brands that suddenly popped up because a team is willing to do it," said Mallat at the time.

Prince of Persia: The Shadow and the Flame will be released on July 25 for £1.99.

Every PlayStation 4 comes bundled with The Playroom
Jul 3rd 2013, 16:26

Augmented-reality application The Playroom will come pre-loaded on all PlayStation 4 consoles.

Every PlayStation 4 console will come bundled with a pre-loaded copy of The Playroom, Sony has announced.

The Playroom, which was seen during Sony's E3 2013 press conference, is an augmented-reality game that combines the DualShock 4 controller with the PlayStation 4 Camera to interact with a fleet of on-screen robots. The application is also compatible with smartphones, tablets, and the PS Vita.

The app is designed to show off many of the DualShock 4's new features, such as the light bar, touchpad, dual motors, and speaker. These can also be used in The Playroom to play AR mini-games, such as Air Hockey.

While The Playroom comes bundled with the PlayStation 4, the PlayStation 4 Camera does not.

The PlayStation 4 will be released later this year for $399.

Gran Turismo 6 demo now available
Jul 3rd 2013, 15:58

Gran Turismo 6 demo clocks in at 1.1GB and allows players to compete in this year's GT Academy.

The Gran Turismo 6 demo is now available to download on the PlayStation Store, weighing in at approximately 1.1 gigabytes.

The demo takes place on the UK's Silverstone race track, which is new to the series, and lets players drive the Nissan 370Z around five time trial events--four different chunks of track, and one full lap of Silverstone.

Before entering the time trials, players must progress past a tutorial and four warm-up races in the 370Z and also the Nissan LEAF.

The demo also marks the start of the fifth season of Sony's GT Academy competition, which gives Gran Turismo players the chance to compete in real-life driving events. Players can enter by posting their best Silverstone lap time to the game's leaderboards. This leg of the competition runs until 23:59 BST on July 28, and is open to players across Europe, the US, and Russia.

Any player who clears all five of the time trials with a bronze medal or higher can also unlock an additional Gran Turismo 15th anniversary event after July 28.

The Gran Turismo 6 demo runs until August 31. The full version of Gran Turismo 6 will be released for the PlayStation 3 later in 2013.

Major Nelson confirms that Assassin's Creed II will be offered for free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers in the second half of July.

Assassin's Creed II will be the next free game offered as part of Microsoft's Games With Gold promotion, Microsoft spokesperson Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb has confirmed.

Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to download the game from July 16 until the end of the month.

Microsoft earlier this week announced that XBLA tower-defence game Defense Grid: The Awakening would be the free game available between July 1 through July 15.

Julie Larson-Green set to replace Don Mattrick as Xbox One boss - Report
Jul 3rd 2013, 13:21

Management reshuffle at Microsoft could see Julie Larson-Green manage Microsoft's entire hardware division.

Windows boss Julie Larson-Green is set to take charge of Microsoft's hardware division, including the Xbox, a Bloomberg report has said.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is set to announce a management reshuffle next week, with Larson-Green in line to oversee the division in charge of producing the Xbox One and Surface tablets. Bloomberg also reports that Skype president Tony Bates is being lined up to manage acquisitions and relationships with Microsoft software developers, but that the potential restructuring isn't finalised and is subject to change.

Don Mattrick was reported to have been lined up for the position, before departing Microsoft to join social gaming giant Zynga as its CEO earlier this week.

Larson-Green has worked at Microsoft for 19 years, and has overseen the launch of Windows 7 and its more controversial successor Windows 8. She also led the visual redesign introduced in Microsoft Office 2007, and her earlier work at the company saw her working on Internet Explorer 3.0 and 4.0.

Broken Age needs more money, says Double Fine
Jul 3rd 2013, 11:08

Kickstarter success story will now be split into two parts, with the first part being sold via the Steam Early Access program to fund further development.

Tim Schafer has said that Double Fine Productions will be splitting the release of upcoming crowdfunded adventure game Broken Age into two parts, and that money raised from the first chapter will be used to fund development of the second.

With an initial target of $400,000, Broken Age managed to rack up $3.3m on Kickstarter in early 2012, but Schafer sent a note to backers saying the increased scope of the game meant that studio now required more money to finish the project. "Even though we received much more money from our Kickstarter than we, or anybody anticipated," said Schafer, "that didn’t stop me from getting excited and designing a game so big that it would need even more money."

"I think I just have an idea in my head about how big an adventure game should be, so it’s hard for me to design one that’s much smaller than Grim Fandango or Full Throttle. There’s just a certain amount of scope needed to create a complex puzzle space and to develop a real story. At least with my brain, there is."

The team at Double Fine looked into initially releasing just the first half of the game, but the team's predictions showed that this wouldn't be ready until June 2014, with the final build of the game not being finished until some time 2015. "My jaw hit the floor," said Schafer.

"This was a huge wake-up call for all of us. If this were true, we weren’t going to have to cut the game in half, we were going to have to cut it down by 75%!"

Broken Age's original release date was aiming for October 2012, but after increasing the scope of the game the release was then pushed back to January 2014.

Schafer continued, saying that the studio would need to find more money to finish developing Broken Age in its current form and without any major cuts. "You guys have been been very generous in the tip jar (thanks!) but this is a larger sum of money we were talking about. Asking a publisher for the money was out of the question because it would violate the spirit of the Kickstarter, and also, publishers. Going back to Kickstarter for it seemed wrong."

The team then decided to release the first half of the game--with some "modest cuts," adds Schafer-- in January 2014 using Steam's Early Access program, which allows developers to charge for software that is currently in development.

"Backers still get the whole game this way - nobody has to pay again for the second half," asserts Schafer, adding that the game's design is now "100 per cent done’ and it's not going to get any bigger."

"With this shipping solution I think we’re balancing the size of the game and the realities of funding it pretty well. We are still working out the details and exact dates, but we’d love to hear your thoughts," concluded Schafer.

Double Fine Productions' second Kickstarter project, Massive Chalice, recently ended after raising $1.2m. The turn-based strategy game is being developed simultaneously alongside Broken Age, and is the project is being headed up by Iron Brigade lead developer Brad Muir.
