Capcom explains why Dead Rising 3 moved to Xbox One
Jul 19th 2013, 18:52

Developer says zombie game shifted from Xbox 360 to Xbox One because game was "breaking the bank" on current-generation.

Dead Rising 3 was "breaking the bank" on Xbox 360 and so developer Capcom moved the game to Xbox One, producer Mike Jones told Siliconera in a new interview.

"In terms of building the game, we originally developed it on PC and everything we were doing was breaking the bank on [Xbox] 360," Jones said.

"The number of zombies, the streaming stuff we wanted to do, memory budgets for the number of environments, and items and physics and all of that stuff," he added. "Our tech team partnered with Microsoft to get early specs and figure out how we were going to get it on new hardware."

Asked how Dead Rising 3 has changed since it switched platforms, Jones said the new Xbox One technology allows Capcom to make bigger, more in-depth worlds.

"The biggest things for us have been the size of the world, the density of the world, the streaming spaghetti of getting everything working with no load zones, and seamlessly streaming," Jones said. "Also, how we build missions in a much larger world like that--how we send you to different districts and how we get you to explore all of these nooks and crannies in the environment."

Regarding how much larger a game Dead Rising 3 is compared to past entries in the series, Jones said, "Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 1 together can fit into Dead Rising 3 multiple times over. It's exponentially larger."

Dead Rising 3 was announced during Microsoft's E3 2013 press conference in June. The game--an Xbox One launch title and a platform exclusive--features a new city, Los Perdidos, alongside new protagonist Nick Ramos. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage .

EA signs new college football deal
Jul 19th 2013, 18:38

Publisher and Collegiate Licensing Company agree to new three-year deal for college football games.

Electronic Arts and the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) have agreed to a new and non-exclusive three-year deal that will allow EA to continue to make new college football games.

The agreement, first reported by Joystiq, was confirmed to GameSpot by the CLC. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

It will take effect next July and gives EA the rights to use "more than 150 colleges, conferences, and bowl games" in its franchise. It is not clear if any schools have chosen not to participate.

The full statement is below.

"I can confirm that CLC, as trademark licensing agent for schools, conferences and bowls, has signed a three-year extension of the license agreement with EA, extending its rights to include their logos, trademarks, stadiums, mascots, and other school-specific indicia in a College Football Video Game that EA produces and sells," the representative said. "More than 150 colleges, conferences, and Bowl Games have approved the extension thus far. "

The new agreement comes just two days after the NCAA announced that it would renew its licensing agreement with EA Sports citing "current business climate and costs of litigation."

EA is currently developing a new college football game for next-generation platforms the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, though details on the game have not been announced.

NCAA Football 14 launched earlier this month for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Iwata: "I think the public view of Nintendo will be changed"
Jul 19th 2013, 17:27

President Satoru Iwata says once Wii U sees better adoption, company's public image will improve; Zelda Wii U details coming soon.

If Nintendo can move enough Wii U units going forward, the public view of the company will be changed, according to president Satoru Iwata. Speaking with The Guardian, the industry executive admitted communicating the novelty of the Wii U--relative to the original Wii--has been challenging thus far, but noted that new software will help things turn around.

"So, what we really need to do now is to launch software titles for the Wii U that can take advantage of its unique aspects, one after the other," Iwata said. "So much so that a great number of people are able to touch the Wii U and feel how unique it is. We need to expand the number of such people. And once the number of people has reached critical mass, I think the public view of Nintendo will be changed."

High-profile first-party Wii U games due out this year include Pikmin 3 (August), The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD (October), Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (November), and Super Mario 3D World (December). Next year's lineup includes Mario Kart 8 and an all-new Super Smash Bros. title, among others.

Another major Wii U product in the pipeline is the brand-new Legend of Zelda title. Iwata did not provide any firm details about this project, but said Nintendo will make a "relevant announcement" about the game in the not-too-distant future.

The Wii U has officially sold 3.45 million units to date as of March 31. Nintendo has not provided a sales update for the platform since April. The company will announce first quarter sales results on July 31.

Analyst predicts Xbox One, PS4 shortages at launch
Jul 19th 2013, 16:03

Colin Sebastian of Robert W. Baird says due to "complexity" of coordinating platform launches, gamers can expect initial shortages at retail.

Gamers should expect initial shortages of Xbox One and PlayStation 4 units at retail this holiday, according to Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian.

Speaking with GameSpot, the analyst said due to the "complexity" of coordinating the launches, "it is more likely than not that there will be initial shortages."

"This also partly explains why the manufacturers have been somewhat judicious is allocating pre-sale units to retailers, so that there won't be a lot of unhappy customers from day one," Sebastian said.

As for which platform will debut on the market first, Sebastian didn't have a projection to give, but said the system that does go first will enjoy some advantages.

"From a timing perspective, both platforms will want to launch before Thanksgiving/Black Friday, and ideally at least a couple of weeks in advance of that in order to replenish the retail channel," Sebastian said.

"In terms of who goes first, it would be certainly be ideal to launch first, and gain all of the initial attention and momentum, as console launches are really the only equivalent of a 'red carpet' event for the industry," he added.

The $500 Xbox One is slated for a launch in November, while the $400 PS4 is confirmed only for holiday 2013.

Expectations for both systems are high, with Ubisoft saying yesterday that some retailers have reported two times the number of preorders over historical data for current-generation machines.

Representatives for Sterne Agee and Cowen & Company could not be reached for comment on Xbox One and PS4 releasing timing, while analysts at Wedbush Securities and EEDAR declined to comment.

Trey Parker says "f**k that" to cutting content for DLC
Jul 19th 2013, 15:16

South Park co-creator says he was not interested in offering trimmed down content for The Stick of Truth as expansion packs.

South Parker co-creator Trey Parker has spoken out to say "f**k that" in response to releasing content trimmed from The Stick of Truth as downloadable content.

During a Comic-Con panel yesterday attended by Polygon, Parker said the script he and Matt Stone wrote for The Stick of Truth ballooned to 850 pages, which was too long to be realistic.

Parker explained that his team was urged to "cut it down, cut it down, cut it down," and instead use this extra content as DLC. This drew jeers from the crowd, Polygon reports.

"And I agree… f**k that," Parker said.

Though this extra content isn't likely to appear in The Stick of Truth, Parker said the material will see the light of day somehow, potentially through an episode of the show.

Parker and Stone also revealed during the panel that they were inspired by The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Earthbound, Paper Mario, and The Legend of Zelda when originally setting out to make The Stick of Truth.

The Stick of Truth launches later this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

The achievement is awarded when players complete all eight rounds of the arena without taking a break.

The four runner-ups were "Farticus," "…Not as I do," "Filet Minion," and "Jack of All Blades." Check out the post on the Lionhead Studios website for more.

Fable Anniversary launches later this year only on Xbox 360; a PC version is not in the works. The package includes the 2004 original role-playing game and its Lost Chapters expansion.
