Remedy: Industry going through "tremendous change"
Jul 17th 2013, 16:08

CEO Matias Myllyrinne says "the bets are getting bigger and bigger" and "life's too short" to not take risks.

Remedy CEO Matias Myllyrinne believes the industry is going through "tremendous change" and says his studio is doing all it can to break new ground with its latest project, Quantum Break.

Speaking with GamesIndustry International, Myllyrinne said the success of Remedy's iOS game Death Rally and continuing sales of Alan Wake have given the company financial stability.

However, he said it remains important for Remedy to take risks, something he believes the company is doing with Quantum Break--an Xbox One-exclusive paired with a live-action TV show.

"You need to take risks, we need to take risks. Both creatively and to do things differently to what we've done before," Myllyrinne said. "Doing things the way you've done them in the past… you'll stagnate and die."

"And with Quantum Break, there's a ton of new challenges that we're getting our heads around. We're out of pre-production and it feels like we're in a good spot," he added.

Overall, Myllyrinne said the industry is moving through a state of colossal change, and though the risks are getting larger and larger, he argued, life is too short not to try new things.

"The industry is going through tremendous change," he said. "The bets are getting bigger and bigger. We need to be responsible about the choices we make. For us, it's better to set out and do something very ambitious and hard rather than not. Life's too short."

Myllyrinne also discussed the TV show component of Quantum Break. He confirmed that the pilot episode--filmed in Los Angeles--has been shot, but would not give any details regarding the talent behind the program.

Quantum Break will launch exclusively for the Xbox One in 2014. The game, according to its official announcement, "blurs the line between television and gameplay, integrating the two into one seamless, uniquely immersive experience."

Pokemon Rumble U launching August 29
Jul 17th 2013, 15:35

Wii U action game hitting eShop next month for $18; optional NFC figures will be sold at GameStop for $4 each.

The Pokemon Company and Nintendo announced today that Pokemon Rumble U will launch August 29 in the Wii U eShop for $18. The game will not be sold at retail.

It is the first Pokemon game exclusively for the Wii U and the first Wii U title to feature near-field communication figures. The physical toys, optional for gameplay, will be sold exclusively at GameStop for $4 each.

A total of 18 Pokemon toys will be available for purchase, including Pikachu, Victini, Deoxys, Eevee, and Genesect.

Similar to Activision's Skylanders series, the toys will link up with Pokemon Rumble U through the Wii U GamePad. The toys can save in-game data, allowing players to take them wherever they go while keeping their statistics intact.

Pokemon Rumble U features all 649 Pokemon from Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 and sports single-player and multiplayer modes.

Activision's Skylanders series has made over $1 billion and sold over 100 million toys. The third game in the series, Skylanders Swap Force, is due for release this fall.

Disney is also working on its own similar title, Disney Infinity, for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, 3DS, and Wii U in August.

In addition, Rovio Entertainment's newly announced Angry Birds Star Wars II will allow players to purchase physical toys and scan them into the game.

State of Decay heading to PC this year
Jul 17th 2013, 14:32

Undead Labs' zombie game hitting PC with enhanced graphics and improved framerate for capable systems.

Undead Labs' zombie title State of Decay, which has sold more than 500,000 copies through Xbox Live, is coming to the PC later this year. Undead Labs founder Jeff Strain announced the news during a recent live stream.

The PC version of State of Decay will feature enhanced graphics and an improved frame rate for high-end systems, though it won't have any different content or features.

For time and testing reasons, the company explained, the PC version of State of Decay will not have modding tools, though the company has "no objection" to mods or modders.

"We look forward to seeing what our PC players come up with," the developer said.

State of Decay for the PC will be featured in Steam's Early Access program, and the initial release will support controllers only "for the purposes of feedback." The final version will "of course" have keyboard/mouse support, the developer said.

BioWare on next Mass Effect: "Sh**t's gettin' real"
Jul 17th 2013, 13:46

Cinematic director says fans will be "really excited to play this story," while producer teases "things are really moving forward."

Production on the next Mass Effect game is moving ahead at full steam and with enthusiasm from the development team, according to comments from lead designers made on Twitter.

"New #MassEffect story and main character reviews today. This sh**'s gettin' real! I think the fans will be really excited to play this story," cinematic director Ken Thain said.

Mass Effect producer Mike Gamble echoed Thain's comments, saying, "Lots of great @masseffect meetings today. Things are really moving forward. It's great to be involved in the universe again."

BioWare has not released any official information about the next Mass Effect title, but the developer has not shied away from giving vague details about the project.

Yesterday, BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy said the upcoming Mass Effect game will "be friendly both to old fans and newcomers." He added that the game will retain the franchise's open-mindedness when it comes to gender options and GLBTI-inclusive stories.

BioWare announced the next Mass Effect game last September. It will not feature Commander Shepard, as his story came to a close in last year's Mass Effect 3.

The untitled game will run on the Frostbite 3 engine and, according to executive producer Casey Hudson, will be "fresh and new."

Microsoft now owns XboxOne.com
Jul 17th 2013, 12:57

After legal struggle, Microsoft lawyers take ownership of XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net.

After filing a complaint with the National Arbitration Forum in May, Microsoft now officially owns the domains XboxOne.com and XboxOne.net, according to a new report from Fusible.

The initial complaint was filed in late May, following Microsoft's official announcement of the Xbox One during a high-profile event at the company's headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

It is believed that Microsoft did not register the XboxOne.com domain earlier because doing so could have given away the name of the company's next-generation console.

Microsoft is now the only platform holder to own domain names related to its next-generation console. Sony does not own PlayStation4.com, and Nintendo does not own WiiU.com.

The Xbox One launches in November for $500.

SimCity creative director "dismayed" at game's launch
Jul 17th 2013, 12:35

Ocean Quigley says he was alarmed by "blundered" release of city-building game, but would have left EA regardless.

SimCity creative director Ocean Quigley, who announced his departure from Electronic Arts this week, was "dismayed" by the troubled launch of the game, he told Polygon in a new interview.

Quigley, along with two other veteran Maxis developers, is now heading up Jellygrade, an all-new independent studio already at work on a simulation game for tablets. Though the botched launch was troubling, Quigley said, he was planning to leave regardless.

"I was dismayed at the blundered launch of something that I had poured so much love and attention into, which made the leaving easier but it would have probably happened anyway," he said. "Honestly, I think I would have left regardless of whether EA's launch of SimCity was smooth or rough. It was basically my third SimCity. I did SimCity 3000 and SimCity 4 and this new SimCity."

Explaining his decision to leave and try something new, Quigley said that though he did not pitch his project to EA or Maxis, the idea for his new game is "too weird and science nerdy for EA."

"EA's strengths are executing things with hundreds of people, to well-understood patterns. The stuff that I want to do now is to explore some new simulation themes and some new mechanics and do some stuff that EA is not well set up to do," Quigley said. "So, not knocking EA, they do what they do, but it was time for me and the other developers Andrew Willmott and Dan Moskowitz to go off and try some new stuff."

SimCity's launch in March was marred by server woes, though this trouble has not kept the game from selling 1.6 million copies since launch. The game is due out for the Mac in August.

Battlefield 4 novel in the works
Jul 17th 2013, 12:17

Peter Grimsdale penning book that provides backstory about game's squad; other merchandise includes clothing and peripherals.

Electronic Arts has announced that Battlefield 4's launch this fall will be accompanied by a suite of merchandise, including an all-new novel that provides the backstory for the game's squad.

Written by Peter Grimsdale, who co-authored Battlefield 3: The Russian with Andy McNab, the untitled novel tells the story of a CIA agent named Kovic, who is stationed in Shanghai.

"How has he survived this long in Shanghai? Has he been turned? When a joint US-Chinese mission to North Korea goes horribly awry and his entire team is killed, Kovic is under suspicion from both sides. How is he the only survivor? But Kovic is about to uncover a conspiracy theory that will make him everyone's enemy," reads the book's description.

The Battlefield 4 novel will be published by the Orion Publishing Group.

Other Battlefield 4 merchandise due out alongside the game this fall will be an art book from Titan Books, specially branded gaming peripherals from Razer, controllers from PDP, mouse mats from Qpad, clothing from Jinx, strategy guides from Prima Games, and more.

Battlefield 4 launches October 29 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions are in the works but do not have release dates yet.

Xbox One can play games while they're being installed
Jul 17th 2013, 09:19

Microsoft confirms disc-based games will allow for play during install, but did not confirm a similar feature for Xbox Live downloads.

A Microsoft representative has told Polygon that the Xbox One will let users play games while they're being installed onto the console.

The company said that gamers can play disc-based games while they're being installed to the system's hard drive, with all disc-based titles requiring an install.

Microsoft has yet to confirm whether this applies to titles downloaded from Xbox Live.

In a recent interview, Microsoft's chief product officer, Marc Whitten, said that the company has not done enough to communicate the benefits of the Xbox One.

The Xbox One is due for release this November for $500.

Fans to create unofficial League of Legends fighting game
Jul 17th 2013, 09:18

Riot Games approves of upcoming League of Fighters game as long as developer Instaburst does not profit from it.

A group of League of Legends fans are teaming up to create a 2D fighting game based on the successful MOBA title for the PC called League of Fighters.

League of Legends creator Riot Games has approved the project, provided developer Instaburst does not sell the game.

As part of the announcement, Instaburst has created a trailer, which shows off Annie the Dark Child using her trademark moves from the MOBA.

Instaburst has promised the game will feature a single-player mode, as well as local and online multiplayer.

There is currently no release date set for the fan-made game. Interested parties can get more information at the developer's website.

Forza 5 requires one-time online connection to Xbox Live
Jul 17th 2013, 08:17

Purpose of connection is to download mandatory content to run racing title.

The Xbox One game Forza Motorsport 5 will require a onetime Internet connection to Xbox Live when first started, according to Turn 10, in an interview with IGN.

Studio head Dan Greenawalt confirmed that when players log in the first time, the game will download tracks, cars, and Drivatar data. "Our production schedule is such that we are putting them in as late as possible and that means making them free as downloadable content on day one," he said.

Greenawalt added that the download is required content to run the title. "We basically have designed the game to work with all that content no matter how late [it] is coming in, in order to make the biggest game possible," he revealed during the interview. Xbox One owners can begin playing the game while parts of it are still being downloaded.

Microsoft changed its always-online policy for the Xbox One after its E3 press conference in June this year. The console, along with Forza Motorsport 5, will be available this November.
