Square Enix on why Deus Ex is going mobile
Jun 5th 2013, 15:33

Publisher says The Fall won't be "watered down," explaining "we're as serious about next-gen as we are about tablet gaming."

When Square Enix announced Deus Ex: The Fall today for iOS devices, fans of the series may have wondered why the publisher chose to go the mobile route.

Company marketing director Jon Brooke answered that question in an interview with MCV, telling the site that the move was all about bringing content to wherever there is an audience.

"This isn't about tablets vs. next-gen," Brooke said. "We're a big publisher, so you know we'll be showing next-gen gaming at E3 next week. We're as serious about next-gen as we are about tablet gaming."

"As a publisher, we believe all platforms present opportunities and if you create the right content, we believe we can have success," he added. "It's not just about next-gen for us: it's about PC gaming, tablets, browsers. Wherever there is an audience, it's about creating great content that's suited to their needs."

Brooke said Deus Ex: The Fall will not be a "watered down and light" game, but instead a true HD title like 2011's Human Revolution .

"I don't think many companies understand what you can do with these platforms," he said.

The Fall is set in 2027, a period described as a "golden era for science, technology, and human augmentation," but also a time of serious social divide and "global conspiracy." The game stars Ben Saxon, a former British SAS Mercenary who underwent a physical augmentation.

It launches this summer for $7 and is the first Deus Ex title in the series to be released on mobile and tablet devices.

Deus Ex: The Fall launching on iOS this summer
Jun 5th 2013, 14:51

Latest installment in series launching later this year on iOS devices for $7; developed by Square Enix Mobile in conjunction with Eidos Montreal and N-Fusion.

After teases and much speculation, Square Enix today officially announced Deus Ex: The Fall, an iOS game due out this summer for $7.

Developed by Square Enix Mobile in collaboration with Deus Ex: Human Revolution studio Eidos Montreal and N-Fusion, The Fall is described as a "story-driven action RPG." It is the first Deus Ex title in the series to be released on mobile and tablet devices.

The Fall is set in 2027, a period described as a "golden era for science, technology, and human augmentation," but also a time of serious social divide and "global conspiracy." The game stars Ben Saxon, a former British SAS Mercenary who underwent a physical augmentation.

"Betrayed by his private military employers, the Tyrants, not only is his own life at risk, but for all augmented humans, time is running out," reads the game's description.

The Fall picks up directly after the events of Random House's Deus Ex: The Icarus Effect novel from James Swallow.

"The team has done an incredible job creating a whole new story and controls for intuitive touch screen gameplay, whilst staying true to the Deus Ex universe," Eidos Montreal game director Jean-François Dugas said in a statement. "Players can expect exploration, action, hacking, stealth, social enhancers, player choice and consequence--the full Deus Ex experience."

Square Enix mobile general manager Antony Douglas added that the company will not cut any corners on The Fall just because the game is for mobile and not consoles.

"Smart devices are central to Square Enix's platform strategy and we approach it with the same attention as our boxed and digital releases," he said. "Deus Ex: The Fall is going to be testament to our commitment in delivering high quality entertainment on mobile and tablet devices."

Sean Astin appearing in Video Games: The Movie
Jun 5th 2013, 14:27

Lord of the Rings star and "huge gamer" to be featured in upcoming documentary.

Lord of the Rings, Rudy, and The Goonies star Sean Astin will appear in upcoming documentary Video Games: The Movie, director Jeremy Snead has announced.

"Sean and I have been in touch for the past year and I have given him occasional updates on our film," Snead said in an update to the film's Kickstarter page. "Sean is a huge gamer and has wanted to be a part of Video Games: The Movie from the beginning but his filming schedule hasn't allowed it…until now."

Astin joins a host of developers, executives, and celebrities appearing in the film, including former Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, and Star Trek actor Wil Wheaton, among many others.

Video Games: The Movie is being brought to life through crowdfunding, first through Indiegogo and most recently via a successful post-production Kickstarter campaign. At press time, the movie's Kickstarter stands at $91,140 from 854 backers with 12 days to go.

The film aims to highlight many hot-button topics, including the link between video games and real-world violence, games as art, next-generation trends, and stereotypes that "plague" the industry.

The Last of Us multiplayer detailed
Jun 5th 2013, 12:20

Naughty Dog sheds light on Factions mode, says it is an extension of the themes found in single-player.

With just a week and a half to go before The Last of Us hits store shelves, Naughty Dog has provided details on the game's multiplayer mode, described as the "best ever conceived."

The Last of Us' multiplayer mode is called Factions and, according to Naughty Dog, will represent an extension of the themes found in single-player.

"The moment-to-moment survival present in the single-player campaign is integral to the multiplayer," the developer said. "You'll feel tension and need to be intensely alert at all times."

In Factions, gamers must pick a side: hunters or fireflies. Each player begins with a small number of survivors that must be kept alive and grown over time.

Gamers can accomplish this in two modes, the first of which is Supply Raid. In this mode, a player's team has 20 reinforcements. Once they're exhausted, the match will go to sudden death.

In the Survivors mode, there are respawns. Once players die, they are finished until the next round begins. Matches are best of seven, meaning the first team to win four wins the match.

Naughty Dog described Factions gameplay as "very tactical," also featuring the same crafting system found in single-player. A Listen mode will allow players to locate enemies with silenced weapons, and teamwork is described as "essential."

Similar to how it works in the Gears of War franchise, a fallen teammate can crawl to allies to be revived, placing greater emphasis on teams sticking together. In addition, the Last of Us' Factions mode includes melee combat, allowing players to perform an execution on a downed player.

Gamers who preorder The Last of Us at GameStop will receive the Survival Pack, a multiplayer expansion that includes bonus experience points, a melee attack booster, extra in-game cash, customizable items, and two bonus skins that can be unlocked after the single-player game is completed.

In addition, The Last of Us will feature a $20 downloadable content season pass that includes day-one perks like increased in-game crafting speed, faster healing, a 9mm pistol reload speed upgrade, and a rifle clip capacity upgrade.

The DLC pass also includes access to single- and multiplayer expansions, which will launch sometime after The Last of Us arrives exclusively for the PlayStation 3 on June 14.

StarCraft II pro gamer 'DIMAGA' signs with Roccat
Jun 5th 2013, 11:54

Ukranian player Dmytro Filipchuk has been under Mortal Teamwork since 2010; famous for beating three-time GSL champion Lim "NesTea" Jae Duk.

Ukrainian StarCraft II player Dmytro "DIMAGA" Filipchuk has signed on to represent the German manufacturer of gaming peripherals Roccat in competition and media. It is a one-year deal for an unspecified amount of money.

The 27-year-old Zerg, who famously became the first person to beat three-time GSL Champion Lim "NesTea" Jae Duk in a televised Zerg vs. Zerg match, has been a free agent since leaving his former team Mortal Teamwork on January 15.

Filipchuk was the first member to join Mortal Teamwork…s StarCraft II team on July 24, 2010, dating all the way back to the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty beta. Not more than two weeks after his departure, Mortal Teamwork shut down after nearly 15 years of operation in competitive gaming. After months of talking with several teams, Filipchuk has decided that Roccat will be his home.

"Sadly, Mortal Teamwork had problems with their sponsors and went bankrupt," Filipchuk told GameSpot. "Roccat and its management have a strong heritage in eSports, and they are really committed to professional gaming. I…m happy to join a team where everyone is 100 percent motivated to achieve their goals. I feel that I get the support I need here."

Filipchuk follows a model that sees individual players sign contracts directly with sponsors over signing with a traditional gaming team. While the majority of the world…s best and highest-paid gamers are on teams such as Evil Geniuses, SK Telecom, and TSM, several others have chosen this direct approach. Most notable are first-person shooter deathmatch legend Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel who started his own peripheral company Fatal1ty Inc. more than a decade ago, and fellow StarCraft II players Manuel "Grubby" Schenkhuizen and Aleksey "White-Ra" Krupnyk.

Most recently, Filipchuk's manager, Cyber Sports Network founder Andrew Tomlinson, negotiated similar deals with the other players he manages, including Korean StarCraft II players Kim "viOLet" Dong and Hwan Choi "Polt" Seong Hoon. Last August, Tomlinson negotiated a one-year deal between Kim and Azubu, and most recently, a one-year contract between Seong and computer hardware manufacturer Cooler Master, along with the energy drink NOS.

"Based off of the offers we have received from teams, the deals structured with these sponsors have much better financial capabilities as well as a sense of financial security for the players so they can focus their efforts towards preparing for matches," Tomlinson told GameSpot. "Many players on teams are left in the dark about sponsor expectations, but with these that is definitely not the case. The players are very aware of what is expected of them, as they are involved in the contract negotiation process. Additionally, although these are their title sponsors, I have the ability to sell them elsewhere to non-conflicting brands."

Tomlinson noted that not all players are right for these types of deals. "All three of these players exhibit qualities that can carry a brand's presence and see the return companies look for," he said. "When you see these guys compete at large events, often you will hear the crowd chanting their names."

Filipchuk considered many variables when deciding his choice, though of course getting the best deal was top priority. "Honestly, it…s obviously the money/salary," Filipchuk told GameSpot. "But there is also a ton of other factors like prize money, streaming restrictions, job security, devices to use, and building my own brand."

"The most important reason is when considering my future it makes the most sense. I believe with personal sponsorships you can get much more opportunities overall with high financial capabilities. Also this gives me the chance to build myself more and work closer with a company than I ever have before.…

Some concern raised by fans with players signing to individual sponsors is a lack of team unity and practice partners. Filipchuk says this won…t be an issue. "I have a lot of friends that I talk with, and can practice with when I need to. I used to practice on my own, so it's not necessary for me. Playing on Ladder is enough for me."

Earlier this month, famed American StarCraft II player Greg "IdrA" Fields was removed from his team Evil Geniuses due to derogatory remarks. Since then, he has gone on to make an unofficial end to his playing career, choosing instead to move into a commentator role and produce content. Such an option was not in Filipchuk's mind.

"No, I never think about retiring," Filipchuk said adamantly. "I'm one of the top 16 players in the world according to the World Championship Series, so my decision was right to keep practicing hard and try to do my best as always."

Filipchuk will represent Roccat in his first official tournament this upcoming weekend at Blizzard…s 2013 WCS Season 1 Finals in South Korea. Filipchuk is only one of three non-Korean players to be represented of the 16 in attendance, and is currently grouped with current GSL Code S runner-up Lee "INnoVation" Shin Hyung, and the previous season…s champion, Shin "RorO" No Yeol. Filipchuk knows he has a tough battle in front of him, but he has never been one to be put down by such a thing.

"I have a GSL champion in RorO, a runner-up in Innovation who is really crazy in Terran vs. Zerg, and Revival who is very scary in Zerg vs. Zerg lately," Filipchuk said. "It will be really tough for me. So if I'm being objective, I have a really small chance to pass this group. But as always, I will try to do my best, and I hope I will show at least my standard play. If I can do it, I think it will be really fun."

In a statement sent to GameSpot from Roccat marketing manager Sebastian Strick, the company described its partnership with Filipchuk as "perfect."

StarCraft II is one of the biggest eSports titles in many parts of the world. With DIMAGA we have found a player who fits our brand perfectly," Strick said. "Besides his tremendous success as a gamer, he has the perfect attitude and professionalism to represent ROCCAT in tournaments and competitions all over the world."

"DIMAGA will take part in the development and testing of our new products. With his experience and knowledge of gaming he will be the perfect addition for our product designers," the statement goes on. "As well as being in the unique position of influencing and advising on our products at an early stage, he will of course get all the support every traditional team would be able to give him."

Filipchuk says he wants to buy an apartment for himself and his wife. Earlier this year the StarCraft community got together without provocation to try to win a contest to send them on a honeymoon vacation to the United Arab Emirates. They won the contest. This as much as anything is why Filipchuk won't be leaving the game anytime soon.

"eSports is the best option for me. I love what I do. I just love it.…
