Naughty Dog asked Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg to write Uncharted movie
Jun 27th 2013, 17:42

Superbad writers say developer has "constantly" asked them to make Uncharted film for the past four years.

Naughty Dog is eager to make the Uncharted movie with Superbad and Pineapple Express writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, according to the pair.

Speaking with IGN during an interview for his latest movie This Is The End, Rogen said, "They're constantly asking me and Evan to make the Uncharted movie."

Goldberg added that Naughty Dog contacted the longtime collaborators on multiple occasions over the past four years, but have repeatedly turned down the job because they are unsure how to best adapt the game for the big screen.

"It's just going to be Indiana Jones," Goldberg said. "If we could figure out a way to make it not Indiana Jones, it'd be awesome."

The Uncharted movie has been in the works for years. At one point, The Fighter director David O. Russell was set to direct the film starring Mark Wahlberg as Drake and either Scarlett Johansson or Amy Adams as Elena. Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci were also reportedly involved, cast as Drake's father and uncle, respectively.

O. Russell dropped out of the film in May 2011 citing "creative differences" with Sony. Limitless director Neil Burger took up the director's chair just months later, but left the project a year later.

The current status of the film is unknown.

Kickstarter coming to Canada
Jun 27th 2013, 16:28

Crowdfunding site expanding to allow Canadian projects later this summer.

Crowdfunding portal Kickstarter will allow Canada-based projects later this summer, the company announced today. Currently, the platform is only available to those in the United States and Europe.

Creators interested in learning more can sign up for Kickstarter's mailing list to let the company know what kind of project they are interested in launching.

Brutal Legend studio Double Fine Productions was one of the first major developers to bypass a traditional publisher relationship and seek funding directly from fans when it launched a campaign for a point-and-click adventure game through Kickstarter in early 2012.

Numerous developers big and small have since spawned projects on Kickstarter in the wake of Double Fine, including Star Citizen, Project Eternity, Godus, a Leisure Suit Larry remake, and others. In addition, technology like the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset and Ouya console were successfully funded through Kickstarter.

Games topped Kickstarter successes in 2012, with $83 million in total donations to 2,796 projects from 561,000 backers. The success rate for games, however, was low--at around 30 percent.

Kickstarter, of course, supports projects other than games. Some high-profile success stories include a spiritual successor to Garden State from Zach Braff and a Veronica Mars movie.

Oddworld dev wants to remake Metal Gear Solid 1
Jun 27th 2013, 15:48

Just Add Water writes open letter to Hideo Kojima explaining why British studio would be well-suited for the project.

British developer Just Add Water, the team behind Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD, has written an open letter to Hideo Kojima explaining why the studio is "ideally positioned" to remake the original Metal Gear Solid.

"We at Just Add Water feel ideally positioned to do the remake justice for several reasons:

1: We have experience working with legendary IP (Oddworld Inhabitants) and treating the subject matter with the respect it deserves.

2: Many members of our team are huge Metal Gear fans, with very good knowledge of the source material.

3: We really, really want to do it."

The company directed Kojima to its high-definition update of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath and its in-development re-creation of Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee--titled Oddworld: new 'n' Tasty--as evidence of its abilities.

"We eagerly await your response," the company said.

The proposition is genuine and sincere, the developer explained. "We wouldn't offer if we weren't sincere. We have some big fans here," the company added.

Just Add Water's letter to Kojima is not an out of the blue offer. Kojima recently said over Twitter that though he is not actively looking to remake Metal Gear Solid, he does have interest in the idea.

"Well, if there's some creator or team in this world who has love and passion to remake 'MGS1', I would love to ask for it," he said.

Kaz Hirai made $1.6 million last year - Report
Jun 27th 2013, 14:39

Sony CEO compensation for year that saw first profit in five years revealed in government filing.

Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai made ¥153 million ($1.6 million) in annual compensation for the past financial year, a period that saw the PlayStation maker post its first profit in five years.

That figure is up 74 percent from the ¥88 million ($900,000) he earned for the previous financial year, when he served as executive deputy president.

The figures were revealed in a company filing with Japan's Finance Ministry obtained by Bloomberg. The document also shows that former vice chairman Ryoji Chubachi received ¥194 million ($1.9 million) following his retirement last week.

By comparison, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick made $8.33 million during the company's most recent financial year.

Hirai, a Sony veteran, was promoted to CEO last February. He joined Sony in 1984 as part of its music group. In 1995, he transferred to Sony Computer Entertainment America, where he was instrumental in launching both the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, and he eventually became its president and CEO.

In a 2006 management shake-up, Hirai replaced Ken Kutaragi as president of Sony Computer Entertainment International, where he helped turn around the then-money-losing PlayStation business.

The PlayStation 4 launches this holiday for $399/€399/£349.

Kojima looking to remake MGS1 with next-gen Fox engine
Jun 27th 2013, 13:56

[UPDATE] Metal Gear Solid creator says he'd be interested in another MGS1 remake, but error in translation means it's not actually happening right now.

[UPDATE] Hideo Kojima has said on Twitter that he is not actively looking for a studio to remake Metal Gear Solid in the Fox engine, but that his translator misinterpreted his comments. "Regarding the rumor from yesterday," he said, "checked the data recording of the actual interview. It was mistranslated from our side. Chris, my interpreter answered in different nuance that made this consequence. I on the other hand, answered w/ bit of lip service."

"I answered 'You (the journalist) wanted me to do MGS2 on Fox Engine but I cannot do. I wish if only someone could make MGS1 on Fox Engine.' The journalist wasn't wrong."

"We are deeply sorry for the misinterpretation on our side," he concluded.

While Kojima isn't actively looking to remake MGS, he indicated he still has an interest in the idea. "Well, if there's some creator or team in this world who has love and passion to remake 'MGS1', I would love to ask for it," he said.

The original story follows below.

Hideo Kojima is looking to remake the original Metal Gear Solid using Kojima Productions' next-generation Fox engine, GameReactor reports.

During a roundtable interview at E3 2013 attended by GameReactor, the MGS visionary said that he's currently seeking an external studio to handle the adaptation.

The original Metal Gear Solid was released in 1998 for PlayStation, and was ported later to Windows in 2000. The title is considered to be one of gaming's definitive titles. Kojima has entrusted the Metal Gear franchise to external developers in the past. Eternal Darkness and Too Human developer Silicon Knights handled the 2004 GameCube remake Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes.

Kojima Productions also drafted in Bayonetta developer Platinum Games for spin-off title Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, which was released earlier in 2013.

Kojima Productions' Fox Engine was revealed in 2011 and is designed to be a cross-platform engine designed around the next-generation: Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The Fox Engine is powering Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, and is also behind Pro Evolution Soccer 2014.

Elsewhere in the interview, Kojima said the value of next-generation consoles was about far more than improved visual prowess. "For us it's not about upgraded graphics or anything like that," he said. "We're really looking forward to the fact that we can now use multiple devices to play a game. So whether it's smartphones or tablets, we can play Metal Gear Solid V on that tablet or smartphone and integrate that into what we have on the console. So people can play the game essentially 24 hours and be in the world of MGS anytime they like to."

Désilets: "The future is digital and there's nothing you can do about it"
Jun 27th 2013, 13:34

Assassin's Creed creator bullish on digital revolution, says developers should makes games "with a cultural point of view."

There's no escaping a digital future for the game industry, according to Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Désilets. During a Gamelab conference session in Barcelona, Spain attended by GamesIndustry International, Désilets said AAA games are here to stay, though the way they are distributed will change.

"Right now we are at a crossroads in our industry," Désilets said. "But I don't believe the AAA blockbuster will die. Maybe the way it is distributed will change, but it won't die."

"Yeah, games come on disc, and I get it guys you were really pissed off," he added, presumably referencing backlash to the Xbox One's since-reversed policies. "But, deep down, nobody cares about not having CDs any more. The future is digital, and there's nothing you can do about it."

"Deep down, nobody cares about not having CDs any more. The future is digital, and there's nothing you can do about it."

Désilets also called for greater diversity in big-budget games going forward, saying developers should make games "with a cultural point of view" instead of "space marines and shooters."

"I believe we need a revolution in subject matter," Désilets said. "It has been four E3s that I've gone to, and it's always the same thing. I get it: we all like space marines and shooters, but come on, we need to talk about something else."

"Make games with a cultural point of view. We did a game, somehow, about the Muslim faith. We did a game about the Italian renaissance. [Ubisoft] did a game about the American Revolution. Having a cultural point of view will become more and more important," he added. "There is something about where I come from in the game I was making [1666: Amsterdam]. I think that will change the entire industry."

Désilets said the game industry is still in its infancy and bemoaned how some games favor blowing things up over interaction between human beings. He explained that the game he was working on, 1666: Amsterdam, was "all about that."

Désilets also gave an update on his current lawsuit against Ubisoft for control of 1666: Amsterdam, which he launched after he was fired last month.

"I'm fighting for it, and that's all I can say for now," Désilets said. "It's all those years of experience put together. I'm sorry guys, it was amazing. And it still is amazing, and I hope to get it back and finish it for you--and for me."

Sony offering refunds after Deadpool price mistake
Jun 27th 2013, 12:57

PlayStation maker accidentally charged $60 for $50 Marvel game on PSN, affected users will be given $10 refund.

Gamers who purchased Deadpool for $60 through the PlayStation Network this week will be given a refund due to a pricing mistake, Sony has confirmed.

"We are aware of the Deadpool pricing discrepancy on PSN. If you purchased the game at $59.99 you will receive a $10 credit," Sony said. "Expect an XMB message with more info later this week."

Deadpool launched this week to a mixed critical reception. The game was developed by Transformers outfit High Moon Studios and is based on the Marvel anti-hero.

Activision cut 40 full-time positions at High Moon Studios following the completion of Deadpool in April to "better align our development talent against our slate."

Sony explains why PS Plus is required for PS4 online play
Jun 27th 2013, 12:37

Shuhei Yoshida says due to "large investment of resources" for online play, keeping service free would have been "absurd."

Sony has explained why a PlayStation Plus subscription will be required to play PlayStation 4 titles online. In the latest issue of Famitsu (translated by Kotaku), Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said that it would have been "absurd" to keep the service free, considering the "large investment of resources" Sony has made for online infrastructure.

"The main pillar for the PS4 will be online play. We're developing many new ways to play and connect which requires a large investment of resources," Yoshida said.

"Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if that's the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service."

Currently, Sony does not charge a penny for online play for the PlayStation 3. PlayStation Plus subscriptions are offered for $50 per year and current memberships will carry over to the PS4.

The move puts Sony in line with Microsoft, which currently mandates Xbox 360 users have an Xbox Live Gold membership ($60/year) to play games online and access features like Netflix.

Elsewhere in the Famitsu issue, Sony Japan president Hiroshi Kawano said just because the PS4 is the main show moving forward, support for the PS3 is not ending anytime soon.

"It's been seven years since the release of the PS3 and the console continues to sell at a constant pace, plus we have many upcoming titles," Kawano said. "We have no intention of immediately shifting from the PS3 to the PS4."

"With the 2014 launch of our cloud service in the US allowing users to play PS3 games on the PS4, some people may switch consoles from the PS3 to the PS4," he added. "But that'll be a gradual process, and to say 'we're releasing a new console, so trade in your old ones for it' would be a maker's ego talking, plain and simple."

The PS4 launches this holiday for $399/€399/£349.

Consoles becoming more like PCs, says Alienware
Jun 27th 2013, 11:46

PC manufacturer says Microsoft and Sony have adopted innovations from the PC space for their next-generation consoles.

Game consoles and PCs are more alike than ever before, according to Alienware general manager Frank Azor. Speaking with PCGamesN, Azor said the distinctions between Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC architecture are slipping away.

"A lot of the innovations and things that are proven on the PC are making their ways onto consoles," Azor said. "The consoles are looking more and more like PCs every day."

The Xbox One and PS4 are both built on a PC-focused x86 architecture. And from a service standpoint, Azor pointed out, the platforms are also adopting features PC gamers have had for years.

"You're installing games now instead of running them off the disc, because that's the right thing to do; you're downloading games digitally, which we've been doing on PC for years; they're integrating certain TV aspects and stuff, well, ten years ago we started experimenting with media center," Azor said.

The Xbox One ($500) and PS4 ($400) launch later this year.

Xbox 360 sales will shortly overtake Wii in the UK
Jun 27th 2013, 11:18

Microsoft's Xbox 360 set to become the best-selling console of this generation in the region.

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is poised to overtake Nintendo's Wii as the best-selling console of this generation in the UK, games industry number-cruncher GfK Chart-Track has told MCV.

The latest figures show that the Xbox 360, which launched in December 2005, has shifted over 8.4 million units.

Microsoft has closed the sales gap between Nintendo's Wii, which once dominated the hardware charts. The Xbox 360 will overtake the Wii's hardware sales in a matter of days, says Chart-Track.

1.5 million sales now separate the Xbox 360 from the PlayStation 2, the UK's best-selling console of all time. Sony's legendary machine, which launched in 2000, has shifted 10 million units.

Microsoft is still supporting the Xbox 360, and announced a redesigned version of the console at E3 2013. Many high-profile titles, including Grand Theft Auto V, will also grace the platform before Christmas.

"This is an historic milestone and our sincere thanks goes to each and every person that has bought and enjoyed Xbox 360 over the past eight years," said UK Xbox executive Harvey Eagle to MCV.

"As you saw at E3 earlier this month, we announced a new Xbox 360 form factor and we are committed to ensuring Xbox 360 remains the best place to play games, connect with friends and enjoy your entertainment."

"Youéll see great exclusive content coming not only to Xbox 360, but also to Xbox One later this year.é

The Xbox One will launch in November.

Microsoft scraps developer fees for Xbox 360 patches - Report
Jun 27th 2013, 10:46

Title updates for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games are now free.

A change of policy at Microsoft means the platform-holder is no longer charging developers for Xbox 360 title updates, a new report has said.

Eurogamer reports that Microsoft quietly ushered in the change earlier in 2013, and that developers are no longer charged a fee to re-certify their games through Microsoft's submission process. Microsoft still charges a fee to developers when they initially submit Xbox 360 and Xbox Live Arcade games to be published, with the games then tested and sent for approval through Microsoft's certification process.

There are reported to be a few caveats, with Microsoft able to charge developers if it suspects an excessive amount of submissions.

Additionally, a source told GameSpot that Microsoft no longer charges developers to have Xbox Live Arcade games re-certified if they fail their initial submission. The move is believed to have been implemented to help smaller developers who lack the resources of bigger publishers, and avoid situations such as when Fez developer Polytron opted to re-release a patch with a potential save-corrupting bug in 2012.

Microsoft's previous system gave developers one title update for free, before levying fees upon subsequent updates. Double Fine boss Tim Schafer attached a $40,000 figure to the fee in an interview with Hookshot in 2012.

Microsoft's choice to charge for additional title updates was so that developers would focus more on the quality of their software before initial release, GameSpot has been told.

Abolishing some of the fees attached to the Xbox 360 submission process brings Microsoft's publishing model one step closer to PC platform Steam.

Fez developer Phil Fish previously said that the situation with Fez would never have happened with Steam. "Had Fez been released on Steam instead of XBLA," said the developer a year before porting the game on Steam, "[Fez] would have been fixed two weeks after release, at no cost to us."

Yoichi Wada now board chairman at Square Enix
Jun 27th 2013, 09:49

Former company CEO stepped down previously due to company's "extraordinary" loss.

Former Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada is now the company's Chairman of the Board, according to the company's official site.

Previously, Wada stepped down in March as a result of the company's "extraordinary" loss of around $106 million. This was due to "sluggish" sales performance of its major games in Western territories. His replacement was longtime chief financial officer Yosuke Matsuda.

Wada said before on April that he wished to "support the firm in [his] own way," and said that he won't be the president, director, or staff member of Square Enix Holdings.
