Limbo on PS Vita supports cross-buy
Jun 4th 2013, 16:05

Playdead's puzzle platformer now available for PS Vita; $15 purchase gets gamers portable and PlayStation 3 versions.

Limbo for the PlayStation Vita supports Sony's cross-buy system, developer Playdead announced today. The game is available now in the United States on PlayStation Network for $15.

Limbo launches tomorrow in Europe on PSN for €12.99/£9.99.

Through the cross-buy promotion, gamers who purchase the PS Vita version will also receive the PlayStation 3 version at no extra cost. Limbo originally came to PS3 in 2011.

The game is a collaboration between Playdead and Double Eleven, which co-developed LittleBigPlanet for PS Vita.

According to Playdead CEO Dino Patti, the teams have been working hard to adapt the game for PS Vita "without compromising the experience."

Limbo puts players in the shoes of a small child who must find his way through a black-and-white world, filled with puzzles and dangerous, often deadly, obstacles.

The game won critical acclaim upon release, which was followed by a small avalanche of award nominations that yielded multiple Interactive Achievement Awards and a Game Developers Choice Award.

Murdered: Soul Suspect details emerge
Jun 4th 2013, 15:39

Upcoming game from Square Enix shown off in teaser video; more details at E3 next week.

Square Enix today provided new details on its 2014 action game Murdered: Soul Suspect and released a new video highlighting the game's main character.

The nearly 3-minute spot focuses on the main character, Ronan O'Connor, a detective with a checkered past. After he is killed by a "brutal and relentless" enemy, O'Connor is stuck in the limbo world of Dusk and remains there until he can bring his killer to justice from the afterlife.

O'Connor cannot speak with detectives working on his case, so he must "read the minds of the living" and influence their thoughts and actions with his supernatural abilities.

As was rumored, Murdered: Soul Suspect is set in Salem, Massachusetts, the location of the Salem witch trials in 1692, which saw public executions of those convicted of witchcraft. During his investigation, O'Connor must interrogate the ghosts of Salem to learn more about his killer.

Murdered: Soul Suspect is currently in development for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. According to the teaser video, more details will be shared at the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo next week.

Company of Heroes 2 open beta going live today
Jun 4th 2013, 15:09

Pre-release trial for upcoming RTS runs through June 18, allows gamers to carry over progression and unlocks to full game.

A Company of Heroes 2 open beta will launch later today, developer Relic Entertainment has announced. The beta will run through June 18, a week before the game releases in full.

The Company of Heroes 2 beta features the game's multiplayer mode, allowing players to try out competitive and cooperative gameplay on six of the game's maps. It also lets gamers test out the first 45 levels of the title's progression and bulletin system.

Gamers who play the Company of Heroes 2 open beta will retain all progression and unlocks, provided they purchase the full game within the first 60 days after launch and play on the same Steam account.

"We have been working hard since the closed beta balancing and improving all areas of the game as well as adding new matchmaking servers," producer Greg Wilson said in a statement. "COH2 has had one of the most successful beta programs we've ever run at Relic and the support of the fans has been a critical factor in making the game more balanced and stable for launch."

Company of Heroes 2 will launch exclusively for PC on June 25 published by Sega, which acquired the franchise and Relic Entertainment for $26.6 million during THQ's bankruptcy auction in January.

Harmonix: Rock Band will return
Jun 4th 2013, 14:30

Company CEO Alex Rigopulos says studio will return to the franchise "at the right point in time."

Rock Band fans may have been disheartened to learn today that Harmonix's next game is not a new entry in the series, but rather Fantasia: Music Evolved, a new Kinect game with Disney.

However, Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopulos told VentureBeat that the Rock Band franchise is not gone forever, but will return in a reimagined form some day.

"'I'll also say that we don't view Rock Band as something that's being left behind," Rigopulos said. "It's something we’ll return to at the right point in time and reimagine it as appropriate for its time."

The most recent entry in the Rock Band series was last summer's downloadable game Rock Band Blitz. In all, more than 130 million Rock Band songs have been downloaded to date.

Rigopulos said in October 2011, a year after Rock Band 3 hit store shelves, that the series may undergo a "creative reinterpretation," though it is unclear what this means.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Microsoft confirmed Fable Anniversary will launch later this year for Xbox 360.

The game runs on the Unreal 3 Engine and boasts a new lighting system, as well as new systems for cutscenes and facial animations. It also features SmartGlass support and all-new achievements.

The original story follows below

Lionhead Studios has teased that it is working on Fable HD for the Xbox 360.

In a short teaser video (below), various tweets are shown directed at Lionhead and asking for a remake of the original role-playing game.

Top-down action shooter launching on Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 in July for $7; Halo Initiation comic revealed.

Microsoft today announced Halo: Spartan Assault, an all-new single-player Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 top-down action shooter.

Developed by 343 Industries in conjunction with Vanguard Games (Gatling Gears, Greed Corp), Halo: Spartan Assault is described as "accessible" and made for fans and newcomers alike.

The game is set between the events of Halo 3 and Halo 4. It explores the first missions of the Spartan Ops program and provides greater clarity into the story of the Human-Covenant wars.

Gamers play as either Commander Sarah Palmer or Spartan Davis aboard the UNSC Infinity as they take on "never-before-seen" skirmishes against Covenant attackers.

Halo: Spartan Assault features 25 missions, weekly challenges, and leaderboards. The game also boasts 40 achievements and medals.

The game also ties in with Halo 4, allowing console players to score new achievements and emblems for their Halo 4 Spartan. "Additional integration features" will be made available after launch, Microsoft said.

Halo: Spartan Assault for Windows 8, tablets, and Surface devices will add support for the Wired Xbox 360 controller "shortly" after launch through a title update.

Lastly, Microsoft announced today a new partnership with Dark Horse Comics for a new three-part series called Halo: Initiation. It tells the story of how Commander Shepard Palmer became a Spartan-IV and ties in with Halo: Spartan Assault.

Jun 4th 2013, 12:34

7" Wikipad arriving on first day of E3 in the United States; release in UK to come later; status of 10" version unclear.

The $250 gamepad-equipped, Android-powered Wikipad tablet will launch in the United States on June 11, the first day of the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo, developers announced today. A United Kingdom launch will follow later this summer.

The Wikipad will be available through the company website, as well as via big-box retailers like Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Tiger Direct.

"The launch of the Wikipad 7 tablet signals a transformative turning point in the direction of the mobile gaming industry," Wikipad Inc. chairman Matthew Joynes said in a statement. "Wikipad's tablet combines the latest range of features found in a premium Android tablet together with the unrivaled console video game experience only available with a gamepad."

The Wikipad was originally targeted to launch at GameStop on Halloween, but was later pushed back.

The Wikipad tablet features an attachable dual-analog controller and a 7-inch IPS touch-screen. The device comes with 16GB of memory with a micro SD slot to support an additional 32GB of storage. The Wikipad table boasts an Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core processor and is "optimized for cloud-gaming."

The Wikipad will support games downloadable through PlayStation Mobile, Nvidia's Tegra Zone, Google Play, OnLive, and other forthcoming platforms.

No mention was made of the previously announced 10" Wikipad. In February, Wikipad revealed that the larger model remained in development, but was not the company's focus.

Double Fine's second Kickstarter successful
Jun 4th 2013, 12:13

Brutal Legend studio's crowd-funding campaign for Massive Chalice crosses $725,000 target, extra funds to be used to expand game's scope.

Double Fine's second Kickstarter campaign has been successful.

The Brutal Legend and Psychonauts developer's crowd-funding effort for tactical strategy game Massive Chalice has crossed its $725,000 funding target after just five days.

The studio's original Kickstarter game--Broken Age--hit $1 million in under a day.

At press time, funding for Massive Chalice stands at $737,756 from more than 20,000 backers. Funding closes June 27.

Double Fine does not have any specific stretch goals laid out for Massive Chalice, though the developer said the game's scope will grow based on the amount of total backing it receives.

"There will be ongoing conversations with the community as new features are considered, so stay tuned and let us know what you'd like to see in the game," Double Fine said.

Double Fine designer Brad Muir, who created Iron Brigade and worked on Psychonauts and Brutal Legend, is heading up development on Massive Chalice. The game is inspired by tactical strategy games like XCOM, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Fire Emblem, as well as noble families like those found in Game of Thrones.

Massive Chalice boasts two main layers: strategy and tactics. The game also features permadeath, in that players will need to choose between keeping heroes on the battlefield or retiring them to create a new generation of combatants.

The game is in its "earliest stages of development" at Double Fine for Windows, Mac, and Linux, using the developer's own Buddha Engine engine. It is expected to launch by September 2014.

Massive Chalice is the third project Double Fine is currently developing, adding to Dropchord and point-and-click adventure game Broken Age.

Wargaming axes 'pay-to-win' model for 'free-to-win' plan
Jun 4th 2013, 09:41

In-game components from World of Tanks and other Wargaming games that give players an edge cannot be purchased from now on; World of Warplanes open beta starting soon.

Wargaming's vice president of publishing Andrei Yarantsau has said on Gamasutra that the company would be removing all "pay-to-win" elements from its games and will replace them with a "free-to-win" model.

All in-game components from World of Tanks, World of Warplanes and World of Warships that gave players an edge gameplay-wise will not be available for purchase with real money. Examples include premium ammo that gave players a bonus to armor penetration.

Wargaming would instead focus on receiving revenue from transactions for cosmetic items and customization options. The company stated that the free-to-win model would balance out the loss of the previous model, and hoped that this new system would facilitate World of Tanks as "a true eSports discipline".

In related news, Wargaming announced that World of Warplanes will be in open beta soon. The game will enter two open beta phases as well as go through a wipe that will reset player's achievements, planes, credits and gold.

Earthworm Jim/Neverhood creators open Kickstarter for Armikrog
Jun 4th 2013, 09:37

Upcoming PC game from Doug TenNapel and Pencil Test Studios to be a claymation-animated point-and-click adventure title.

Earthworm Jim co-creator Doug TenNapel and Pencil Test Studios, a group comprised of the people responsible for The Neverhood franchise in the late '90s, have opened a Kickstarter campaign for its upcoming adventure game called Armikrog.

The game will be using stop-motion animation and sculpture for its art style and graphics. The point-and-click adventure title is about a space explorer named Tommynaut and his blind alien dog called Beak-Beak, who crash-land on an unknown planet and get locked up in a fortress called Armikrog. The soundtrack will be composed by Terry S. Taylor, who worked on The Neverhood.

At this point in time, the Kickstarter campaign total was at $403,258 with a pledge goal of $900,000. Digital rewards for contributors who donate $30 and beyond are a concept art book, a soundtrack sampler, and even a production puppet of main character Tommynaut.

The game is slated for a PC and Mac release, and will be distributed through Steam and other download services. Head to the campaign page for more information.
