Microsoft confirms privacy policy for Xbox One
Jun 7th 2013, 01:44

Kinect can be paused during games and entertainment; system will seek user permission before sharing personal data.

Late last month, Germany's federal data protection commissioner, Peter Schaar, likened the Xbox One to a "monitoring device". Since revealing its new home console, Microsoft has attempted to allay fears from consumers that the unit may watch and listen to them at all times, saying it could be completely turned off. Today, the software giant revealed official information on how the device will operate, and what it will do with personal data.

The initial setup for the console will allow users to toggle whether they want to automatically sign in, as well as providing the chance to customise their privacy settings. “When Xbox One is on and you“re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded,“ the FAQ page reads.

Users will be able to manually pause the Kinect as desired when playing games or viewing live television, but mentioned that some features will need the system to work. When powered off, the console will only activate when hearing key terms. This feature can also be disabled completely.

“If you don“t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say 'Xbox Off'. When the system is off, it“s only listening for the single voice command--'Xbox On', and you can even turn that feature off, too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you“ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.“

Microsoft also outlined two specific examples of the camera system collecting personal details. In one, your fitness workout could use the Kinect to track your heart rate and calories burned; while in the other, players may be able to use facial expressions to fool opponents while playing card games. The company stressed that all captured information would be under the control of the user.

“You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate, and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission.“

Lastly, with the Kinect camera in a pause state, Microsoft claims that players will be able to take full control of the system using the standard Xbox controller, or a compatible mobile device.

"While it“s faster to find what you“re looking for using your voice and gesture commands with Kinect, you can use a controller, your remote controls, or your smart devices instead. And you can use all of these devices when Kinect is paused."

Microsoft today also confirmed that the Xbox One will require 24-hour check-ins, and that fees associated with pre-owned games will be decided by the game's publisher.

NBA 2K14 skipping Wii U
Jun 7th 2013, 00:58

2K Sports confirms upcoming NBA sim not coming to Nintendo's latest; game to launch day-and-date with Xbox One and PS4; Lebron James is cover athlete.

NBA 2K14 will be the latest title to skip the Wii U, 2K Sports confirmed today. Senior vice president of sports operations Jason Argent revealed the news today on a conference call.

"We are not doing a Wii U version this year," Argent said. "The decision was made internally that resources would be best put toward building a really, really amazing current-generation and next-generation game and we didn't want to take resources away from creating amazing experiences on“all those platforms."

Argent's comments came during a roundtable with media to officially announce NBA 2K14 and give first details about the project. The game will ship on October 1 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, while Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will be available day-and-date when those platforms launch later this year.

Argent described NBA 2K14 as 2K Sports' "biggest endeavor yet" and said the game will offer "something for everyone." He also revealed that Miami Heat star Lebron James will be the game's cover athlete. He is appearing on a video game cover for the first time with NBA 2K14.

Gamers who preorder NBA 2K14 for Xbox 360 and PS3 will receive the King James Bonus Pack, which includes 10,000 worth of virtual currency, a Lebron James signature skill, access to James in the game's blacktop mode, and extra content for the Path to Greatness mode.

Commenting on NBA 2K14, James said, "It's going to be the best sports video game this world has ever seen. get ready."

Argent also fielded a question regarding the competition 2K faces in the marketplace from EA Sports' NBA Live series, which will return this year after years of absence.

"Regardless of what happens in the competitive landscape, our focus and our philosophy has just always been head down, create the best possible experience for fans year after year after year," Argent said. "That some objective, which has guided us over all of our years, will continue with 2K 14. So, we acknowledge the competition in the marketplace, but our focus is 100 percent on us and continuing to build a bigger and better and more evolved game experience year after year."

Preowned games on Xbox One decided by publisher
Jun 6th 2013, 23:00

Microsoft confirms that it won't charge any fees for any titles eligible for resale.

Microsoft has said that the availability of preowned games on the Xbox One will be decided by individual publishers but that eligible Xbox One games will be able to be traded and resold without paying a fee.

Provided individual publishers--such as EA and Activision--allow it, titles purchased physically will be able to be traded in at participating retailers for either cash or in-store credit.

"In our role as a game publisher," reads a statement from Microsoft, "Microsoft Studios will enable you to give your games to friends or trade in your Xbox One games at participating retailers. Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers."

"Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games," adds the platform holder.

Provided the individual publisher approves, disc-based Xbox One games are also able to be traded between friends, but only once per game. There are no fees for trading titles between friends, Microsoft says, but users are required to have been friends on Xbox Live for at least 30 days before making a trade.

Microsoft says that there will be no option to loan or rent software at the launch of the Xbox One, but that it is "exploring the possibilities with our partners."

All Xbox One games will be available digitally and in stores on the day of release, Microsoft adds.

The Xbox One was officially unveiled last month in an event held at Microsoft's campus in Redmond, Washington. At the time, a report suggested there would be a fee attached to preowned sales.

Microsoft will be showing off its catalog of Xbox One titles next week at E3 2013 in Los Angeles. GameSpot will be in attendance.

Microsoft confirms required 24-hour check-in for Xbox One
Jun 6th 2013, 22:41

Playing Xbox One games on somebody else's console will also require a check-in every hour.

Microsoft has officially confirmed the previous statement given by corporate vice president Phil Harrison that all games running on the upcoming Xbox One console will need to check in online every 24 hours.

The platform holder had previously refused to state exactly how often the Xbox One would need to check in online.

"With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console," reads Microsoft's statement.

If playing games on another Xbox One, such as a friend's or family member's, the console will require check-in with an active Internet connection every hour.

Microsoft adds that "offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you reestablish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies."

According to the official details, this is required so that the platform can acknowledge and verify whether users require game updates or have traded in their games. Additionally, Microsoft says games that make use of the Xbox One's cloud technology "may" require a constant connection to the Internet.

Microsoft recommends a broadband connection of 1.5Mbps for use with the Xbox One. "For reference, the average global Internet connection speed as measured recently by Akamai was 2.9 Mbps," says the publisher, adding that "in areas where an Ethernet connection is not available, you can connect using mobile broadband."

The Xbox One can be connected to a home network using a wired cable or via 802.11n wireless. The Xbox One contains two wireless antennas, as opposed to the singular antenna used in the Xbox 360.

Microsoft will be showing off its catalog of Xbox One titles next week at E3 2013 in Los Angeles. GameSpot will be in attendance.

The Xbox One was officially unveiled last month in an event held at Microsoft's campus in Redmond, Washington. Speaking at the event, Microsoft said that the console would not require an always-online connection for offline games.
