SpyParty enters open beta
Jun 5th 2013, 01:59

Early access paid beta opens for indie espionage game SpyParty.

Upcoming indie game SpyParty has entered a paid open beta phase.

Players who are interested can register on the SpyParty website, and pay $15 for early access to the beta. A secondary option is also available for users who wish to donate $50 or more to the project and have their name entered in the game's credits.

Developed by Chris Hecker, SpyParty is a multiplayer espionage game that sees each player assume the role of a spy or sniper. The spy must complete a number of missions within a given time limit, and the sniper must identify and kill the spy with one shot before these missions are completed. Killing an innocent civilian results in a loss for the sniper.

According to the game's website, additional modes are being developed for the game.

Hecker has expressed a wish to release the game on "all the major platforms". SpyParty currently has no confirmed release date.

Wii U Basic being discontinued at GameStop - Report
Jun 5th 2013, 01:06

Retail source says GameStop is gearing up to discontinue the 8gb Wii U on June 18.

Nintendo could be gearing up to discontinue its Wii U Basic SKU after E3 2013, a new report suggests.

Kotaku has posted a report from an anonymous retail source saying that, as of June 18, all GameStop stores will need to return any remaining stock of Wii U Basic consoles.

Nintendo originally launched the Wii U in November 2012 with two models, the 8gb Basic and 32gb Premium, with the latter being bundled with a copy of Nintendo Land.

The Wii U has suffered from slow sales in 2013, and multiple retailers around the world have reduced the price of the console in various sales.

The source says GameStop has contacted its stores with the following message. "Nintendo Wii U Basic Recall - Two Week Preparation On Tuesday, 6/18, all stories will need to return all new/unopened Wii U Basic (020359). .. Stores that have 10 or more in stock will receive shipping cartons from the [distribution center]. .. All other stores will need to save shipping cartons for this recall."

GameSpot has contacted GameStop for comment.

Nintendo will not be hosting its own press conference at E3 2013, but will instead hold its own Nintendo Direct event that will showcase, among other titles, the first look at the new 3D Mario game for Wii U.

PES 2014 skipping Xbox One and PlayStation 4
Jun 5th 2013, 00:28

This year's installment of Konami's soccer simulation will be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and PSP.

This year's installment of Konami's soccer simulation PES won't be seeing a release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, the publisher has confirmed.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 won't be seeing a release on Vita or 3DS, either. The game will be available later this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and PSP.

This year Konami says it will be making PES using Kojima Productions' Fox engine, the same technology behind Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

Konami says PES 2014 will feature six main tenets, revolving primarily around what Konami calls its TrueBall technology. Konami says TrueBall features advanced physics that allow the player to trap or knock on a pass using the analogue stick.

PES 2014 will also feature Konami's Motion Animation Stability System, which claims to simulate the "bodily contact" between multiple players. There's also Heart, which allows teammates to rally together to boost the morale of flagging individuals. "One moment of individual brilliance can produce a galvanising effect on team mates," says Konami.

"The cauldron effect of a vibrant stadium will showcase the mood of the fans, with all-new sound effects combining with stunning AI systems to create a palpable match day atmosphere", Konami aded.

PES European community manager Adam Bhatti took to Twitter following the game's announcement to explain Konami's decision not to bring PES 2014 to next-gen platforms. “Not in the business for highres nextgen ports,“ he wrote. “We can't and shouldn't do that. Bad habit etc.“

“So the fact we're not on PS4/Xbone with PES 2014 is simple. We can't and shouldn't be just using higher quality textures etc." Bhatti said that a next-gen version of a title "should be new."

“In the past people accused us of being lazy," added Bhatti. "We're adamant of not making the same mistakes, and making sure we create amazing football games.

“It's hardly amazing making the nextgen version prettier. We shouldn't have that mentality, and you shouldn't expect that. Aim higher."

“I'm a gamer like u, can't wait for nextgen, so I feel your pain. But once u see #PES2014 in action, that pain will disappear. It's stunning,“ concluded Bhatti.

Blizzard talks new spawning option for Starcraft II
Jun 4th 2013, 21:52

Production director Chris Sigaty explains why spawning is only just now coming to RTS, says company has done a poor job making gamers aware of Starter Edition.

Blizzard Entertainment today introduced a system called spawning into Starcraft II, allowing its Starter Edition and Wings of Liberty players to be temporarily upgraded to Heart of the Swarm accounts when playing with friends.

GameSpot caught up with Blizzard Entertainment production director Chris Sigaty to discuss the move and what it means for the future of Starcraft II.

Why are you doing this?

There's a couple of things that are coming together here. There's spawning, and then there's Starter Edition. And Starter Edition is something that we've actually had for a while, but we have done, being self-critical, a poor job of making people aware of. We limit the race to Terran traditionally because we feel they're the most accessible to brand-new users coming into Starcraft II. But, starting today up until the end of Sunday, all three races are available. We will go back to one race being active, but then we'll have weekends with promotions to switch the race or have multiple races active at once.

Spawning has been a feature in Blizzard games since Warcraft II and Starcraft: Brood War. As such a Blizzard-specific feature, why has it taken so long for this to come to Starcraft II?

"Now that we've had the bandwidth to do this, it just felt like the right time now that we've finally had a little bit of air to breathe into this feature."

I think priorities. This was something we talked about in the past but never really had a good vision for it. We were working on important features for the core game as we did Heart of the Swarm, and a lot of the patches that followed up Wings of Liberty that added things like Masters and Grand Masters leagues. If you go across the patches they were all adding newly important functionality. Then Heart of The Swarm drops with a whole bunch of great stuff, including things that make life easier for players to find each other, take command, all the new replay functionality, all that stuff felt more important. Now that we've had the bandwidth to do this, it just felt like the right time now that we've finally had a little bit of air to breathe into this feature.

Beyond the bandwidth side, I think one of the things that Starcraft faces as a perception issue is being a really hardcore versus eSport. It's about the best of the best facing off against each other to show who's the better player. If you go back to Warcraft II, the original Starcraft, and then Warcraft III after it, I think there's a lot of nostalgic memories around just playing Big Game Hunters with a large group of friends, or playing in team games against each other where the pressure wasn't that. I think a feature like this will help bring down the perception that SCII is only a game about playing competitively and at a super-high skill level, and that there is a way to interface in SCII that's not so focused on who's the most elite player.

A few months ago you stated there were no plans for a multiplayer free-to-play Starcraft II. Do you believe the Starter Edition and spawning is the better way of going about putting the game out to the masses?

I don't know if it's a better way or not. But I think some of the pitches--and this is my personal view on it--free-to-play is a great concept for some games, but the way Starcraft II is built, it's just not designed for stuff like skin and that sort of stuff that players have suggested so far. For what we have today, this does feel like the right answer. Whether free-to-play as a consumer product versus a boxed product on which one is better, it's hard for me to judge that. For that we've built, and how we built it, the Starter Edition/spawned way seems like the best way we can make it accessible to players, and the widest group of players.

The idea is that the game is most fun when you play with your friends, and that's what this feature lets you do easily. In free-to-play, it's more about how am I interacting with the purchase of this game myself, where this feature is approaching it like "What's an easy way to get players to be able to play with their friends?"

Is there a possibility of having one-versus-one ladder play unlocked in the future?

As you have to be in a party, there's no current plans to have the one-versus-one ladder active at this time. We'll continue to look and see how this is successful, and who knows what the future holds, but right now we don't have any plans in that direction.

Based on previous spawnings in older games, do you have any guess on how many will use this, or how much the player base will increase?

I have zero idea. (laughs) I think this will help educate the existing community and they'll understand it is actually very easy to share and get people into SCII, where maybe they didn't understand that.

Do you think spawning is the best way to get these people into Starcraft II--those who have a notion of the game as a one-versus-one hardcore eSport?

I think so. Having a friend along to help steer you in the right places is a hope. When you came over to somebody's house to play the game with friends in the old days, and that person knew, not only were they helping you play the game even though you didn't own it, they were also helping educate you on the fun. I think this is a really good way of having a guide along with you--"Let's try this; let's go do this." Without it, you need to figure that out for yourself. Being with a friend has that benefit to it where you can have that guide, where you can go, what you can do, and what's fun.

Shadow of the Eternals crowd funding to be temporarily canceled
Jun 4th 2013, 20:46

Precursor Games canceling crowd funding through Kickstarter and its own site on June 6 after "exciting new opportunities" emerge; will return in next few weeks.

The crowd-funding campaign for Shadow of the Eternals--a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness--will be temporarily canceled later this week.

Developer Precursor Games announced the news today, saying the campaigns on Kickstarter and through its own website will shut down on June 6.

At press time, nearly $285,000 had been contributed to the project from almost 5,000 people.

Explaining the move, Precursor Games CEO Paul Caporicci said the studio has received "a host of new exciting opportunities that will make the game better than we envisioned."

None of these opportunities were detailed, though Caporicci said Precursor will relaunch a new Kickstarter in the next few weeks that will reveal some of the new developments.

Caporicci also made clear that "not a single dime" from the Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter campaign will be removed from supporters' accounts, and those who donated through the game's website will receive full refunds.

The game was originally targeted to launch during the second half of 2014 for the Wii U and PC.
