Female Assassin's Creed lead 'wouldn't be surprising' says Ubisoft Mar 4th 2013, 15:28 Game director says concept of female assassin in future core entry "not something we're trying to avoid."
All mainline entries in the Assassin's Creed franchise have starred male protagonists, including the just-announced Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. But could a future installment feature a leading lady? "It's a bit of a tough question," Black Flag game director Ashraf Ismail told IGN. Ismail explained that Ubisoft had planned out a story arc revolving around the Kenway family for a long time. This arc was always going to focus on Edward, Haytham, and Connor, he said. "This was actually years ago, we had this," Ismail said, adding "we actually never thought, 'could this be a woman?'" For Black Flag, Ismail added that though there were a handful of famous female pirates, this was uncommon. "So we didn't want that element to be a detail people got stuck on," he said. PlayStation Vita game Assassin's Creed III: Liberation featured a female lead, but would a mainline entry in the series do the same? "I would say it wouldn't be surprising to see a female assassin coming up in a mainline Assassin's Creed," Ismail said. "But for us, for AC4, it was always Edward." Epic Games art director Chris Perna said in February that female lead characters for the Gears of War series could negatively impact a game's sales potential. "If you look at what sells, it's tough to justify something like that," he said at the time. IGN asked Ismail if keeping with a male protagonist was a branding decision for the Assassin's Creed series, and he said the idea of a female assassin for future games is not off the table. "I actually don't know what the brand team is working on for the next few games," he said. "But the concept of a female assassin, I can tell you it's not a no-no, it's not something we're trying to avoid at all." Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is due out October 29 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PC, Wii U, and other next-generation platforms. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage. A beta period for The Elder Scrolls Online will begin at the end of March, Bethesda has announced. Those chosen to try out the 2013-dated massively multiplayer online game will be notified by email. Players must then download the client, which is estimated at around 20GB. Gamers selected for the beta will not have access to the entire world of Tamriel nor will they be able to play whenever they wish. The first stage of "beta events" will be playable only during specific times and will focus on certain areas, features, or other gameplay elements. These beta events will be generally held during weekends, Bethesda said, and will be limited to only a "few events per month" during the first stages. As testing progresses, Bethesda will schedule longer tests. The first wave of beta invitations for The Elder Scrolls Online in March and April will be "smaller," but will ramp up in size and scope as launch approaches. Regarding selection criteria, Bethesda said it will choose testers depending on specific needs. Those worried about being passed over because their PC rig isn't top-of-the-line can breath a sigh of relief, as the developer said a "broad range" will be chosen. Gamers can sign up for the beta at the Elder Scrolls Online website. The Elder Scrolls Online will cover the entire continent of Tamriel, including the lands featured in previous Elder Scrolls games like Cyrodiil, Skyrim, and Morrowind. The game will be set 1,000 years before the events of last year's hit Skyrim and will put players into the world on the brink of demonic assimilation at the hands of the daedric prince Molag Bal. The Elder Scrolls Online is due out in 2013. Its pricing model has not been announced, though the founder of game consultancy firm Gamesbrief, Nicholas Lovell, believes it will launch with a paid subscription but will eventually become free-to-play. inXile Entertainment today announced Torment: Tides of Numenera, a DRM-free single-player role-playing game for PC, Mac, and potentially other platforms. A Kickstarter campaign for the project will begin Wednesday, though the company did not divulge a funding target. Torment: Tides of Numenera--due out December 2014--is set in Monte Cook's tabletop role-playing world of Numenera, which itself was successfully funded through Kickstarter. It will have an isometric perspective and runs on the Unity game engine. inXile was clear that Tides of Numenera is not a sequel to Planescape: Torment, but rather a "completely new game" that has been designed to provide the same experience and feeling as the original. The game asks players: What does one life matter? InXile says choices will matter in Torment: Tides of Numenera. "Torment is a game of complex and nuanced morality, deep and reactive choice and consequence, and immersion into a new and strange vision," the company said. The development team behind Torment: Tides of Numenera is made up of veterans, including Brian Fargo (inXile founder), Kevin Saunders (Neverwinter Nights II: Mask of the Betrayer), and original Planescape: Torment developers Colin McComb and Adam Heine, as well as the aforesaid Monte Cook. inXile is also working on Wasteland 2, which it successfully crowd-funded last year. That game is due out during October 2013. Epic Games has discussed the leaked copy of Gears of War: Judgment that's been circulating online, saying that it's "ultimately going to be a good thing" for the game. Last month, Gears of War: Judgment was leaked to torrent sites over a month before its release on March 19, leading Microsoft to declare that "vigorous action" will be taken on those who download an illegal copy of the title. But Epic Games is trying to remain upbeat. Speaking to GameSpot at a London preview event for the game, lead level designer Jim Brown discussed how he sees the leak as a potential positive. "From my perspective, that tells me people are excited--that they want to get their hands on the game, which is a good thing, right?" "I think that's ultimately going to be good for us," added Brown. "I'm trying to look at it from the perspective of, ultimately, that if somebody is that interested that they feel the need to do that and risk their entire life, well, okay." But what about the rest of the Epic Games team? "Obviously people are upset about it," concedes Brown, but adds that Microsoft and Epic have "got it covered, it's taken care of. Things are happening." Gears of War: Judgment will be released on March 19 exclusively for Xbox 360. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage. The Wii U must sell more units, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. Speaking to MCV, the executive praised Nintendo's latest console, but said sales must increase. "We think Wii U is a great machine. But it just has to sell more," Guillemot said. As of December 31, the Wii U has officially globally sold 3.06 million hardware units and 11.69 million software copies since launch. The system reportedly sold only 57,000 units in the United States during January. Guillemot also commented on Watch Dogs, saying after the cross-dimensional game's unveiling at the 2012 Electronic Entertainment Expo, the published increased resources for developer Ubisoft Montreal. "E3 was a great revelation for Watch Dogs," Guillemot said. "It gave us a chance to increase the whole project, giving the studio the chance to have bigger teams to help them achieve this goal they have. You always have great ideas, but you need enough people to bring it to life. After E3, we really made sure they had all the teams they needed and all the capacity they wanted to fulfill their dream. Watch Dogs is currently in development for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC. Set in Chicago, the game puts players in the shoes of Aiden Pearce, a hacker who uses his smartphone to break into the city's central operating system to control things like security cameras and also to obtain personal information. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will be getting exclusive features for the PlayStation 4, Ubisoft has announced. Speaking to GameSpot at the game's reveal event in London, creative director Jean Guesdon said that the PlayStation 4 version of the game would be essentially "the same game" as its PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 counterparts, "but we will also use some other features that we will talk more about later during the year." A Ubisoft representative confirmed that the studio is looking into utilising the PlayStation 4's new controller, which features a touch pad on the front. Ubisoft has already revealed that the PlayStation 3 version of Assassin's Creed IV will contain 60 minutes of exclusive content. This content will also be made available for the PlayStation 4 version. Sony officially unveiled the PlayStation 4 in February, and Microsoft is rumoured to be announcing the Xbox 720 in April. Ubisoft has said Assassin's Creed IV will be coming to "next-generation platforms." Even without the additional features, Guesdon says the PlayStation 4 version of the game will be the best version to play. "You can imagine that we will use [the PlayStation 4's] full capacity and the potential of the console. Just graphically speaking it will be really enhanced. Just think about the lighting, the physics, the ocean simulation that will be experienced." Summing up the PS4 version of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag as "better looking, better simulation, and some more features." Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is set across the Carribean in 1715 and stars a new protagonist, British privateer-turned-pirate Edward Kenway. Speaking about the team's decision to switch to a new protagonist, Guesdon said "Edward almost came naturally. We just wanted that brash young rebel that would totally fit into the pirate era." When asked if Edward Kenway was an attempt to recreate fan-favourite character Ezio Auditore, Guesdon said "I think we all liked Ezio. But we're not trying to redo Ezio, right. We're doing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. This is not AC2, this is not Brotherhood." Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will be released this October.
