Microsoft reveals Surface 2 tablet line
Sep 23rd 2013, 15:47

$450 Surface RT 2 and $900 Surface Pro 2 will launch October 22.

Microsoft today announced updated versions of its Surface tablet line. The $450 Surface RT 2 and $900 Surface Pro 2 will be available at retailers starting on October 22.

As detailed by GameSpot sister site CNET, the updated Surface RT features a slimmer body, a 1.7GHz Nvidia Tegra 4 processor, and a higher resolution screen compared to the original.

Both the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 feature 1,920x1,080 screens that have been color-tuned for greater accuracy. In addition, both devices sport improved front (3.5MP) and rear (5.0 MP) cameras. The Surface Pro 2, which runs a full version of Windows 8, will continue to be offered in slate black, while the Windows RT Surface 2 will come in a new silver/magnesium color.

Microsoft will also offer a new Touch and Type Covers for the Surface 2 tablets, said to be thinner and more responsive than their predecessors.

"The old system of one sensor under each key has been replaced with a full array of sensors, allowing for partial keystrokes to be counted more easily and accurately, plus support for a handful of gestures," CNET said. "In our hands-on time with the new Touch Cover, typing felt faster, with less latency and with great accuracy, especially when typing quickly."

In addition, both covers are now backlit. Like the original versions, covers for the new Surface 2 tablets will be sold separately.

A Bloomberg report from March claimed the original Surface tablet line underperformed for Microsoft. Price cuts went into effect earlier this year.

Yoshida: Gaikai could stream to PCs, tablets, and smartphones
Sep 23rd 2013, 15:10

Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida says "ultimate goal" is to use Gaikai technology to deliver PlayStation games to "all devices."

Sony's Gaikai technology could be used one day to stream PlayStation games to devices like PCs, tablets, and smartphones, according to Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida.

"Speaking of the ultimate goal, we would like to deliver PlayStation games to all devices," Yoshida told Dengeki Online (translated by DualShockers). "So we're considering various things like PC, TVs, Blu-ray players, smartphones, and tablets. We hope to continue to expand not only to Sony devices, but even to devices other than Sony's. This is still being studied."

Sony acquired Gaikai in June 2012 for $380 million. During Sony's E3 2013 media briefing this summer, the company announced that the cloud-gaming technology would roll out in 2014 beginning on the PlayStation 4, before arriving later on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

According to Yoshida, Sony's investment in cloud-gaming highlights the company's ambition to evolve PlayStation over time from a hardware platform alone to more of a service.

"We previously spoke about PlayStation going from hardware to something closer to a service, regardless of the device," Yoshida said. "Of course, PlayStation will still be the center, but I think we would like to expand to different things."

The PlayStation 4 launches on November 15 in North America for $400.

Street Fighter legend Daigo smashes EVO 2012 champ at Tokyo Game Show
Sep 23rd 2013, 14:32

Daigo "The Beast" Umehara beats Street Fighter 25th Anniversary and EVO 2012 Champion Lee "Infiltration" Sun Woo 10-2 during a Tokyo Game Show showmatch.

Weeks after Street Fighter and fighting games legend Daigo Umehara dismantled current EVO Champion Kun "Xian" Ho 10-0 in Street Fighter IV AE 2013 during a showmatch at PAX Prime, Umehara has done it once again to last year's champion at this past weekend's Mad Catz Unveiled event at Tokyo Game Show.

While not a complete shutout, Umehara's Ryu handily defeated Sun Woo Lee's Akuma 10-2. This is the first time Umehara has defeated Sun Woo Lee in their last four meetings, with Sun Woo Lee eliminating Umehara from EVO 2013, defeating him in the finals of the Street Fighter 25th Anniversary tournament, and sweeping him in the winners bracket of EVO 2012.

"Ever since I became a pro, I've been to a lot of tournaments, but this exhibition match was the one match where I thought about 'how to win' the most," Umehara said, discussing the match after it was over. "I was thinking 'If I've come this far and still lose…, I'd have to throw away all of my past experience and start again from zero.'

"I watched videos of Infiltration, and myself, and I noticed when watching myself 'Oh, this has become a habit,' or 'I should've done more of this,' and tried to work on it."

In the second day of showmatches, Umehara also defeated longtime American rival Justin Wong from Evil Geniuses 3-1. Umehara would lose in the second round of the Japanese Capcom Cup qualifier later that weekend.

Watch the matches between Umehara and Sun Woo Lee, and Umehara and Justin Wong below.

Beyond: Two Souls budget was $27 million - Report
Sep 23rd 2013, 14:16

New report from French newspaper reveals supposed production budget for upcoming PlayStation 3-exclusive game.

According to a new report from French newspaper Le Figaro (via CVG), the production budget for PlayStation 3-exclusive Beyond: Two Souls was €20 million (£16.8 million/$27 million).

It is not clear if this budget, covered by publisher Sony, includes marketing costs. A Sony representative was not immediately available to comment.

Beyond: Two Souls features Hollywood talent in the form of Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Page (Inception, Juno), as well as Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man, The Boondock Saints) and Kadeem Hardison (A Different World).

The game's soundtrack was produced by Hans Zimmer, a prolific composer whose credits include The Lion King and Pirates of the Caribbean, among others.

The $27 million reported budget for Beyond: Two Souls is in the same ballpark as Quantic Dream's last effort, Heavy Rain. According to co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumiere, the 2010 PS3 cost around $22 million to produce, another $8 million to promote, and an additional $10 million to distribute. The game generated $100 million, de Fondaumiere said, making it "very profitable."

Beyond: Two Souls launches October 8. A demo will be released on October 1. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Rockstar working on fix for GTAV vanishing vehicle bug
Sep 23rd 2013, 13:48

Developer says it has received reports about problems with cars and garages; "unfortunately, we do not currently have a workaround to recover a car if it is missing," studio explains.

Grand Theft Auto V developer Rockstar Games is aware of issues some users are reporting where upgraded vehicles have vanished from garages, but has no workaround at the moment.

On the Rockstar Games Support page, the developer said it has received reports about problems with cars and upgrades--particularly after upgrading vehicles and then completing a mission--and is "looking into" the bug.

"Unfortunately, we do not currently have a workaround to recover a car if it is missing," Rockstar Games said. "Also please note that vehicle saves in the garage of one safehouse may not show up in the garage of a different safehouse."

Rockstar Games further explained that the issue may occur if players drive another character's personal vehicle.

While the developer looks into a fix for the issue, the company said players should avoid parking a car in a garage, driving one already in a garage, or getting in a default vehicle when playing as a character other than the one associated with upgrades already earned.

Those who would like to receive an automatic email notification when more information or a fix for the issue is available can log into the Support Site and click Subscribe.

Apple sells 9 million new iPhones in three days
Sep 23rd 2013, 13:00

Company touts record-breaking launch of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c models; more than 200 million iOS devices now running iOS 7.

Apple sold a record-breaking 9 million new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c devices in three days, the company announced today. Both new models went on sale on Friday, September 20.

Apple also announced today that more than 200 million iOS devices are now running iOS 7, making it the "fastest software upgrade in history," the company said.

iOS, the "most significant iOS update since the original iPhone," launched on September 18, introducing a new user interface, color palette, and free radio service called iTunes Radio.

Over 11 million listeners have already used iTunes Radio, Apple said, noting the most popular song is "Hold On, We're Going Home" by Drake.

Demand for the iPhone 5s has "exceeded the initial supply," with many online orders expected to be shipped in the coming weeks, Apple said.

"This is our best iPhone launch yet--more than nine million new iPhones sold--a new record for first weekend sales," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. "The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we've sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone's patience and are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone."

The iPhone 5s is the first smartphone to feature a 64-bit processor. It also includes a fingerprint scanner. The iPhone 5s is available on contract starting at $200 for a 16GB model. The lower-cost iPhone 5c is available in numerous colors beginning at $100.

Xbox One Game DVR clips shareable only through Xbox Live at launch
Sep 23rd 2013, 12:31

Microsoft's Albert Penello says support for YouTube and Facebook will be added by 2014.

Video clips created using the Xbox One's Game DVR feature can be shared only through Xbox Live at launch, senior director of product planning and management Albert Penello has said.

In an interview with Destructoid, Penello said support for sites like YouTube and Facebook will be offered "by next year."

Xbox One Game DVR clips are captured in 720p at 30 frames-per-second. The Xbox One will automatically record the last five minutes of gameplay. Gamers can say "Xbox Record" at any time to begin recording content at any point.

Players can then edit their video and spruce it up with voice-over and even picture-in-picture through the Kinect. The Xbox One also supports external video capture devices.

The Xbox One launches on November 22 for $500.

Colin Farrell offered World of Warcraft movie lead - Report
Sep 23rd 2013, 12:03

Sources say Phone Booth actor has a 50/50 shot to make a deal to star in the upcoming film based on Blizzard Entertainment's MMO.

Phone Booth and In Bruges actor Colin Farrell has been offered a lead role in the upcoming World of Warcraft movie, according to a new report at Hollywood news site Deadline.

Sources told the site that Farrell's participation in the movie is far from a certainty, as the deal to bring him on is reportedly "50/50."

The report also names Paula Patton (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Deja Vu) as a candidate for a lead role.

It is not clear what roles Farrell and Patton would play. The film's plot remains largely under wraps, though the Deadline report suggests the movie will feature "time travel and alien worlds."

Director Duncan Jones (Moon) is also reportedly testing other actors for the World of Warcraft movie's major roles, though these people were not named.

Production on the film will begin in January. Blood Diamond and K-PAX writer Charles Leavitt authored the most recent version of the World of Warcraft film's script.

UK Chart: GTAV becomes fastest selling game ever in UK
Sep 23rd 2013, 09:34

GTA V takes number one spot with 89 percent of sales for the week, while PES 2014 makes its debut at two.

Rockstar's critically acclaimed GTAV has stormed to the top of UK chart this week, becoming the fastest-selling game of all time in the region.

GTAV also becomes the overall 24th biggest selling title of all time in the UK, selling more in its launch week than all other GTA titles combined, and besting previous launch week record holder Call of Duty: Black Ops by almost a quarter of a million units.

On the individual platforms the game is even bigger, becoming the 11th biggest on Xbox 360 and 10th biggest on PlayStation 3 after just five days on sale. The split of sales between platforms is fairly even, with 57 percent on Xbox 360 and 43 percent on PS3.

Despite accounting for almost 89 percent of sales for the week, GTAV wasn't the only new entry to the chart. Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 made its debut at two, while Aliens: Colonial Marines re-entered the chart at eight thanks to retail discounting and promotion.

Elsewhere, The Last Of Us jumped up to three from 27, Saints Row IV dropped from one to four, and Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning makes its chart debut at 22.

The Top 10 UK chart for the week ending September 21:
