Free Forza 5 now included with Xbox One Day One Edition in the UK
Sep 4th 2013, 15:31

UK retailers offering choice between Forza 5 and FIFA 14 when preordering Xbox One Day One Edition.

UK retailers have begun offering free copies of Forza Motorsport 5 to those who preorder a Xbox One Day One Edition.

At Gamescom 2013, Microsoft announced that those who preordered an Xbox One Day One Edition in Europe would receive a free download code for EA's FIFA 14 when the console launches, but Amazon UK, ShopTo, and Game are now all offering customers the option to purchase a SKU with the latest iteration of Turn 10's racing franchise bundled instead.

While the Xbox One Day One Edition was previously sold out at most retailers, Microsoft corporate vice president Yusuf Mehdi said earlier today that the company had found a way to create additional units. "Because of the great progress that we've made by moving to full production and because of the demand we've seen, we've found a way to create a few more Day One SKUs."

The Day One Edition of the Xbox One is only available via preorder, and contains a commemorative controller and an exclusive Achievement.

Microsoft is yet to confirm if its latest promotional offer will be made outside of the UK.

The $499/£429 Xbox One will launch in 13 territories, including the US and the UK, on November 22.

Female fighters coming to EA Sports UFC
Sep 4th 2013, 15:03

Publisher confirms upcoming fighting title will feature playable female characters for the first time in a UFC game; roster includes Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate.

Upcoming fighting game EA Sports UFC will feature playable female fighters, a first for any UFC game, Electronic Arts announced today.

The "groundbreaking" initiative will be headlined by UFC Women's Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey and bantamweight contender Miesha Tate.

"This is a great moment for video games and for Mixed Martial Arts,” said EA Sports UFC general manager Dean Richards in a statement. ”In our commitment to delivering the most realistic fighting experience ever achieved, we wanted to represent the full spectrum of talent and diversity of all the fighters in the sport, including women who have become an undeniable force to be reckoned with.”

EA Sports UFC is powered by the EA Sports Ignite engine and will release on Xbox One and PlayStation 4--but not PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360--in spring 2014.

Fight Night developer EA Canada is creating the game, which is the first product since THQ sold UFC game rights to EA in June 2012.

Xbox One Day One consoles back in stock
Sep 4th 2013, 14:34

Microsoft says it has "found a way" to release more consoles guaranteed for November 22 launch; available now through official store, Best Buy.

Microsoft had sold through its entire Xbox One Day One Edition stock, but additional units are now available through select retailers, corporate vice president Yusuf Mehdi said in a release today.

"We've been very fortunate and we're very humbled by the amazing interest by our fans on Xbox One. So much so that we're actually at this point sold out of Xbox One in pretty much all major retailers around the globe," Mehdi said. "But because of the great progress that we've made by moving to full production and because of the demand we've seen, we've found a way to create a few more Day One SKUs."

"If you're lucky and you're up on your retail website this afternoon, you'll be able to get your Day One SKU," he added.

The Xbox One Day One Edition is currently available through Microsoft's official store and Best Buy, though the launch version of the console remains sold out through Amazon and GameStop.

Microsoft today confirmed the Xbox One will be released globally on November 22, exactly eight years after the Xbox 360 went on sale. Mehdi declined to give specific figures regarding demand for the Xbox One compared to the Xbox 360, but said Microsoft is expecting the "biggest holiday release" ever in the company's history for the new console.

Bungie: Destiny will have "very long" life cycle
Sep 4th 2013, 13:57

Community manager David "DeeJ" Dague says the studio's ambition for the game is to create a world that can be visited over and over again.

Bungie's first post-Halo project--the shared-world shooter Destiny--has been designed with replayability in mind and will have a "very long" life cycle, according to the developer.

"Given the different ways of playing Destiny, and given the fact that the game is completely dynamic and will be different every time you experience it with other people, the amount of time that we”ll be relevant to the gamers who decide to play it is something that we think will be a very long life-cycle," Bungie community manager David "DeeJ" Dague told the PlayStation Blog.

"The idea is to create a world that you can visit over and over again," he added.

Destiny is Bungie's first game with Activision from its ten-year exclusive publishing deal with the Call of Duty company. Three additional titles in the series are rumored to be in development for release every second year after Destiny's debut in 2014. For the years in between, downloadable content is believed to be in the pipeline.

Destiny launches in 2014 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Bungie COO Pete Parsons recently said that the game has the potential to surpass the impact of Halo and sit on people's shelves next to franchises like Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare is multiplayer-only
Sep 4th 2013, 13:08

PopCap Games confirms upcoming console and PC game has no single-player, will cost $40 on Xbox One, $30 on Xbox 360 and PC.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare will be a multiplayer-only game, PopCap Games creative director Justin Wiebe told Shacknews in a new interview.

He also revealed pricing for title, confirming the Frostbite-powered third-person shooter will cost $40 on Xbox One (retail and digital) and $30 on Xbox 360 and PC. The Xbox One version features exclusive content like the Boss Mode.

Wiebe also explained that PopCap Games plans to support Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare after launch with downloadable content and various content updates.

"We definitely want to build on the game once it's launched," Wiebe said. "We're definitely taking a cue from Plants vs Zombies 2. Using DLC and new content updates, we want to keep players engaged in the long haul."

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare launches first on Xbox One in spring 2014, before releasing on Xbox 360 and PC later on.

Microsoft to release the Xbox One on November 22
Sep 4th 2013, 13:00

Microsoft announces release date for Xbox One.

Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One will be released on November 22.

The company also confirmed yesterday that the Xbox One's CPU would be boosted 150MHz to 1.75GHz, and that the next-gen system is in full production ahead of its launch. Microsoft senior director Albert Penello spoke to GameSpot last weekend at PAX about the system, including why the machine was worth the $100 premium over its rival the PlayStation 4.

The Xbox One will arrive days after Sony's PlayStation 4 in North America, which will launch on November 15 for $399, but before the PS4's European launch on November 29.

The Xbox One, which costs $499/€499/£429, comes with one controller, a Kinect sensor, a headset microphone, and a HDMI cable. Customers who have preordered the Xbox One Day One Edition in Europe will also receive a free download code for FIFA 14.

23 games will be available for Xbox One at launch, including exclusive titles Dead Rising 3, Zoo Tycoon, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Killer Instinct.

The Xbox One will be released in this year in Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Spain, United Kingdom, United States, and New Zealand.

Though Microsoft previously announced that the Xbox One would also be available before the end of 2013 in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and Switzerland, the company announced in August that these countries would not see the machine until 2014.

Microsoft: $500 Xbox One is a "very good deal"
Sep 4th 2013, 12:30

Yusuf Mehdi says price point is strong value for what system is offering, believes Xbox One is "unique" relative to competition.

The Xbox One's $500 price point represents a "very good deal" for consumers based on the system's capabilities, according to Microsoft Corporate Vice President Yusuf Mehdi.

"In this version, we made a couple of big bets," Mehdi said this week during the Citi Global Technology Conference. "We said that there are a lot of low end simple casual game boxes. We wanted to have something to really differentiate and lets you plays games as if you're playing movies. We wanted to bring that."

Mehdi explained that Microsoft also wanted to "break the barrier" of being able to control a television set fully with voice and gesture commands through Kinect. To do this, Microsoft "added a lot of capability," he said.

"And so the view we feel is that for our $499, our price point, we think the value that we provide for that is a very good deal," Mehdi said. "Obviously, different people will kind of make their choices, but we feel that we”ve done the right balance."

Former Xbox boss Don Mattrick previously said Microsoft was "over-delivering" on value with the Xbox One.

The Xbox One's $500 price point is $100 more than the Xbox 360 sold for at launch in 2005. Mehdi said when adjusted for price inflation, however, "it's actually pretty comparable."

Also during the presentation, Mehdi discussed how the Xbox One is tracking ahead of launch in November. He said the system has been sold out on preorders for "several weeks" now and that Microsoft is on track to have the largest console launch with the Xbox One by a "wide margin."

Mehdi did not give any specific sell-through predictions for the Xbox One, but said he expects there to be "multiple millions of people" playing the new system this holiday and "tens of millions" of buyers in the first year.

"So feeling pretty good about progress; still a lot to do, but we're feeling pretty good about it," Mehdi said.

Mehdi also talked up the gaming industry overall, saying gaming is the "fastest growing segment in all of entertainment" in terms of hours used and dollars spent. He said the gaming market is expected to grow in the upcoming console generation.

The Xbox One will help to grow this audience, Mehdi said, because it is "pretty unique" relative to the competition, as it's an "all-in-one" console that plays games and offers live TV.

The Xbox One launches in November. Mehdi said supply constraints are expected at launch.

Nintendo unveils subscription-based Pokemon X and Y cloud storage
Sep 4th 2013, 11:52

Nintendo announces Pokemon Bank to allow Pokemon X and Y players to store Pokemon in the cloud; Limited edition 3DS XL and classic starting Pokemon also revealed.

Nintendo has announced the Pokemon Bank for Pokemon X and Y, a premium downloadable application that stores players' collected Pokemon online.

Pokemon Bank will require an annual subscription, though Nintendo did not divulge the fee. A free trial of the service will be available, Nintendo adds.

Pokemon Bank lets players upload up to 3000 Pokemon into the cloud, view them online, and then transfer them back into Pokemon X and Y when the 3DS is connected to the Internet.

The application will also allow users to use the Pokemon Transporter, allowing players to carry over collected Pokemon from Pokemon Black and White to Pokemon X and Y.

Along with Pokemon X and Y's three starter Pokemon--Chespin, Froakie, and Fennekin--the upcoming 3DS game will allow players to pick from either Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle from the original Pokemon Red and Blue.

Iwata also confirmed that the limited edition red Pokemon X and blue Pokemon Y 3DS XL models, previously only confirmed for Japan, would be released in North America and Europe on September 27.

Pokemon X and Y will be released worldwide on October 12, alongside Nintendo's new budget-focused revision of the 3DS: the Nintendo 2DS.

PlayStation 4 will support four controllers
Sep 4th 2013, 10:41

The PlayStation 4 will allow four controllers to be used with the machine at once, Sony confirms.

Sony's PlayStation 4 will support up to four controllers simultaneously, the company has announced.

SCE Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the PS4's controller support on Twitter, following news that Microsoft's Xbox One will allow for eight controllers.

The PlayStation 3 can support up to seven controllers, though few games take advantage of this capability.

The PlayStation 4 will come with a single DualShock 4 controller, and Sony has announced that red and blue variants of the controller will be introduced shortly after launch. The new controller features a touch pad, light bar, and a Share button.

The recommended retail price for DualShock 4 is £54/€59/$59.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.
