Xbox One won't support external storage at launch
Sep 2nd 2013, 19:08

Sony also confirms that PlayStation 4 won't allow game installs to external hard drives.

The Xbox One will not support external storage when it launches in November, Microsoft has confirmed.

Speaking during a Q&A session at PAX, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb said "the future plan [for Xbox One] is definitely to support external storage, much like we do on the Xbox 360."

Microsoft will ship the Xbox One with an internal 500GB hard drive and a USB 3.0 port that will, eventually, allow players to use external storage to manage game downloads and installs.

The feature won't be in the machine at launch, however. "My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list," said Hryb. "I don't know when it will come in, though."

Elsewhere, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that the PlayStation 4 will not allow users to install PS4 games to an external hard drive.

Like the Xbox One, the PlayStation 4 also ships with a 500GB internal hard drive. Sony will allow users to replace the hard drive, however.

Nintendo on Minecraft's absence from Wii U, 3DS
Sep 2nd 2013, 18:22

Mario maker says "we're big fans" of Mojang, but has nothing to announce about open-ended sandbox game coming to Nintendo platforms.

Mojang has released its megahit Minecraft on various platforms, including Xbox 360, PC, and mobile devices, but Nintendo systems have been left out so far.

Asked what Nintendo can say regarding the potential for Minecraft to come to the Wii U or 3DS, business development manager Dan Adelman told GameSpot, "What can we say on that front? [laughs]."

Nintendo senior manager of marketing for licensing Damon Baker added, "We're big fans. We have a continuing relationship with Mojang, and respect all the work that they're doing, but no announcements at this time."

Baker said Nintendo speaks with and keeps track of "what everybody's doing," noting one of the reasons the company is at PAX Prime this year is to have conversations with these developers "whether they're making games for other platforms or not."

"We've got our own favorites that we've had conversations with," Baker said. "So I think it's always a work in progress."

Mojang developer Jens Bergensten said in March that a version of Minecraft for the Wii U would be "very unlikely."

Check back later for more from GameSpot's conversation with Adelman and Baker.

Free FIFA 14 on Xbox One only with Day One Edition preorders
Sep 2nd 2013, 14:50

Microsoft clarifies that bundled copies of FIFA 14 will only come with preorders of a European Xbox One Day One Edition.

Microsoft has clarified that only European preorders of the Xbox One Day One Edition will be eligible for a free copy of FIFA 14 when the console launches this November.

During Gamescom 2013, Microsoft announced that all Xbox One preorders in Europe would receive a download code for the latest iteration of EA's long-running football series.

Microsoft has not confirmed whether a similar promotion will take place in North America.

"Had a few questions on this so wanted to clarify: FIFA 14 will only come free with Xbox One Day One Edition pre-orders, while stocks last," tweeted Xbox community manager Graeme "AceyBongos" Boyd earlier today.

"If you have already preordered a Day One Edition Xbox One, or preorder one from now on while stocks last, you will receive FIFA 14 free."

Amazon UK has currently run out of its current allocation of Day One Edition preorders, but other major retailers still have stock. The Day One Edition of the Xbox One comes with a custom commemorative controller and a code to unlock an exclusive Day One Achievement.

"Another important note--the Day One Edition Xbox One FIFA 14 offer is valid in Europe, this holiday, while stocks last," added Boyd.

The Xbox One will launch this November for £429/€499/$499.

Microsoft says IllumiRoom tech too expensive for Xbox One
Sep 2nd 2013, 12:39

Microsoft's projector and Kinect combination would cost the average consumer "thousands of dollars."

Microsoft's IllumiRoom, the prototype technology that mixes a Kinect sensor with projectors to paint your living room with effects, is unlikely to be released to consumers.

"I wouldn't expect you'll see that," said Xbox One director of product planning Albert Penello to Ausgamers during Gamescom 2013 in August.

Penello explained that the prototype hardware currently costs too much for the average consumer.

"It's really super-neat if you're in the lab and you've got Microsoft money and you could totally set up this awesome lab, but… we looked at it, but for an average customer it's, like, thousands of dollars [for the set up]."

In April, Microsoft's original pitch for the device said that "IllumiRoom envisions a next-generation gaming console with a projector that sits on your coffee table and surrounds your television with projected light." The device would project light around your television screen to convey effects, such as shaking when guns are fired, or having falling snowflakes appear to bounce off furniture in the room.

A five-minute video of the technology showed IllumiRoom working with Gearbox's Borderlands and Valve's Portal.

Driveclub PS Plus Edition will offer discounted upgrade
Sep 2nd 2013, 11:58

Evolution Studios offers more details about the PlayStation Plus version of the PS4 launch racer.

Evolution Studios has said the PlayStation Plus version of PS4 launch racer Driveclub will allow users to obtain a Platinum Trophy, and will also offer users the option to upgrade to the full retail version of the game at a discounted price.

Design director Paul Rustchynsky posted on NeoGAF to say that the PS Plus version will be available "well into the new year" and that "there will be a discount to upgrade to the full digital edition from the PS+ edition."

The price of the discounted upgrade won't be announced "for a few more weeks yet," he added.

"When you upgrade from the PS+ Edition you get the full digital edition which doesn't require a PS+ subscription," Rustchynsky said, but explained that "you can earn the Platinum trophy in the PS+ Edition, remember it's the full game minus a few cars/tracks."

Neither the PlayStation Plus or full retail version of Driveclub will support a split screen mode, Rustchynsky said, and that the studio was currently working on both a photo mode for the game alongside "alternative solutions for trying to get the highest quality vids" for players to share online.

"You guys wanted uncompressed footage and obviously the PS4 capture utilises some form of video compression to ensure the videos aren't ridiculously large (the raw direct feed videos we captured are 6GB for 2 minutes of footage)," he added.

Driveclub is due for release with the launch of the $399 PlayStation 4 on November 15 in North America and November 29 in Europe.

Nintendo says no Ambassador Program following Wii U price cut
Sep 2nd 2013, 11:26

"I know that this isn't what you were hoping for, but we appreciate your support of our products now and in the future," says Nintendo.

Nintendo of America has said the company will not introduce an ambassador program for the Wii U, following the announcement of a price cut to the console last week.

Nintendo introduced the 3DS Ambassador Program to soothe customers who bought the handheld console for $249.99 before its $80 price drop in August 2011, and allowed eligible customers to download ten NES and GameBoy Advance games for free.

In an e-mail sent to Wii U daily, a Nintendo representative confirmed that "there are no plans for a similar program for Wii U."

"I know that this isn't what you were hoping for, but we appreciate your support of our products now and in the future," said Nintendo's Helena Toledo.

Last week Nintendo announced a $50 price cut for the Wii U Deluxe, roughly nine months after the console first launched, dropping the price of the 32GB console to $299.99, and also offering a bundle from September 20 with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD included.

Following the Wii U price cut, the 8GB Wii U Basic model will be phased out.

The Wii U has sold 160,000 units worldwide between the start of April and the end of June, bringing its total to 3.61 million units overall.

Nintendo recently dated many of the console's upcoming titles, including Super Mario 3D World for November 22 and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze for December 6.

Whore of the Orient branded 'racial vilification' by member of Chinese-Australian community
Sep 2nd 2013, 06:39

Chinese-Australian community member finds game's name offensive; intends to make formal complaint to Human Rights Commission.

Upcoming third-person action game Whore of the Orient has been labelled an "attempt to disgrace Chinese culture, history, and traditions" by a member of the Chinese-Australian community, according to a report by The Age.

The claim, from City of Monash Deputy Mayor Jieh-Yung Lo, alleges that the game, which has been at least partially funded by government body Screen New South Wales, is offensive and does a disservice to cultural relations. So much so, he believes, that he intends to make a complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission, saying that the game's title constitutes racial vilification. Citing privacy laws, a spokesperson for the commission told GameSpot that it was unable to confirm whether a complaint had been lodged.

"It's the use of the word 'Orient', more even than the word 'whore', that is the issue," Lo explained. "The O-word is very similar to the N-word for African-American communities. It's a 19th-century racial-colonial conception, and it's especially painful for older people in the communities. That was a very bad time in China, and people don't want or need to have that dragged up."

"'The most shocking revelation is that [game developer] Team Bondi received A$200,000 from Screen New South Wales to develop the project," he said later in the article. "Australian institutions should be encouraged to fund projects and initiatives that cultivate mutual understanding and prosperity in the Australia-China relationship. We need to build greater trust and cultural understanding, rather than promote division and negativity."

Responding to queries from The Age, Screen NSW told the publication that its role is to fund projects, not to dictate the tone or themes tackled as part of artistic endeavours.

"Screen NSW does not proscribe subject matter to content creators, including titles, but makes its funding decisions based on the creative integrity of a project and the expertise of the funding applicants," a spokesperson said. "'Whore of the Orient' is an historical nickname for the city of Shanghai."

While Jieh-Yung Lo has called for a halt to the game's development, he also told The Age that the ideal solution "would be a change of title."

KMM Interactive Productions, the game development arm of Australian film company KMM (responsible for Mad Max and Happy Feet) purchased the game's intellectual property and asset rights in 2011 from Team Bondi, the developer responsible for L.A. Noire.

Last month, a brief video of the game showing third-person cover mechanics, melee combat, and gunplay was leaked online. The game is reportedly targeting a 2015 release.

AU Shippin' Out September 2-6: Total War: Rome II
Sep 2nd 2013, 05:36

Strategy buffs can assume the role of a Roman general in Total War: Rome II, which hits shelves this week. For more hack-and-slash action on console, Diablo III makes its way to 360 and PS3.

This week, gamers can step into the shoes of a Roman general in strategy game Total War: Rome II.

A sequel to 2004's Rome: Total War, the game introduces a number of new features, such as army stances, a revamped political system and combined naval and land battles. Players can make their way through more than 300 years of history, starting from 272 BC.

Sega announced that Total War: Rome II is the fastest pre-ordered game in the history of the Total War series. Day-one DLC will also be available for download, and includes a ninth playable faction, Pontus.

The game's release will follow a worldwide activation time of midnight US Pacific time on September 3, which translates to 5:00 p.m. Australian Eastern Standard time.

For those who prefer a little more hack and slash in their battles, Diablo III makes its debut on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this week. The game was originally released for PC last year to positive reception, but was criticised for its online connection issues.

Blizzard apologised for the game's rocky launch, saying that it did not do enough to ensure a smooth debut.

According to Activision, the console versions of Diablo III have been custom tailored for play with controllers, including an all-new user interface. The console version supports single player and multiplayer, with up to four players via same-screen local play or across PlayStation Network or Xbox Live.
