Analyst: GTAV to net $1 billion in sales during first month
Sep 16th 2013, 15:34

Robert W. Baird analyst says larger installed base compared to GTA IV in 2008 and "unprecedented pentup demand" means new game will outpace predecessor at retail.

Grand Theft Auto V will net $1 billion in sales during its first month, outpacing 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV, according to Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian.

"Given the significantly higher installed base of relevant console platforms at launch, greater sales concentration among the top video game franchises, and unprecedented pentup demand, we expect GTAV to outpace GTAIV sales, and generate roughly $1 billion in retail sales during the first month," Sebastian said in a note to investors today.

GTAIV shipped 3.6 million units ($310 million) on launch-day in April 2008, 6 million units ($500 million) during its first week, and 11 million units ($900 million) during the game's first month. The game has shipped 25 million copies to date.

GTAV goes on sale tonight at midnight across the world. Its online component--Grand Theft Auto Online--will be released as a free update on October 1. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

Free-to-play SingStar reboot to be revealed this year
Sep 16th 2013, 14:54

Sony to discuss how singing series has been reimagined "from the ground up for the digital age" during F2P Summit in October.

Sony will discuss an all-new free-to-play SingStar reboot reimagined "from the ground up for the digital age" during October's F2P Summit, it was announced today.

London Studio director Dave Ranyard's talk will touch on what the company has learned since releasing SingStar as a free-to-play app on PlayStation 3 last year, and how the company is applying these lessons to its new product in the future.

"Phase 1 was to launch SingStar as an app pinned to the PS3’s cross media bar last October," Ranyard said. "Phase 2 is a complete redesign and overhaul of the whole game structure and UI for the digital and F2P age, which is due for release later this year.’

Sony launched a free download for SingStar on PS3 last October, allowing users to try out several short demo songs at no cost. Beyond that, however, players need to pay. The game's catalog of songs, numbering nearly 3,000, must be purchased. Additionally, players will need to supply their own microphone or PlayStation Eye camera for vocal detection.

Rockstar releases GTAV app
Sep 16th 2013, 14:22

Free iFruit app hits iTunes, allows users to stay up to date with Grand Theft Auto V news, train Franklin's dog Chop, and customize cars.

Rockstar Games today released an iOS app called Grand Theft Auto: iFruit, which taps into Grand Theft Auto V to "further postpone the need for real social interaction."

The app features GTAV news, connectivity with the Rockstar Games Social Club and LifeInvader, and also lets users launch other Rockstar Games apps.

In addition, the iFruit app taps into Los Santos Customs, allowing users to customize their in-game vehicle by tinkering with paint jobs, window tints, and suspension, among other features. Users can also create and reserve custom license plates for GTAV and Grand Theft Auto Online using the app.

The iFruit app also allows users to train GTAV protagonist Franklin's Rottweiler dog, Chop, through a feature called "Chop the Dog." Users can pet him, feed him, play fetch, and teach him tricks using the app.

Spending time with Chop using the app will be reflected in GTAV. Chop will be more helpful and responsive to Franklin and will perform tricks if properly trained using the app. Chop will also sniff out desirable items on walks if players train him using the app.

GTAV launches tomorrow, September 17, for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more on the open-world game, check out GameSpot's review.

Microsoft: Japan is a "soulful place" for games
Sep 16th 2013, 13:57

Phil Spencer discusses why Microsoft is attending TGS 2013, says it is "important for us to always stay in touch" with Japan.

The Xbox One launches in November across 13 countries, but not Japan, so why is Microsoft attending the 2013 Tokyo Game Show this week? According to corporate vice president Phil Spencer, it's because the company wants to stay in touch with the "soulful" region that has spawned so many iconic franchises.

"People ask why are we going to TGS. Obviously, Japan we've announced isn't one of our launch territories. When I think about Japan and the history in video games, whether it's just games that I grew up playing or even looking today games that are so important to our industry, I think going to Tokyo, going to TGS, meeting with the developers there, seeing what the gamers are playing, seeing what the creators are making, I think it's just a very kind of soulful place for video games and something that's important for us to always stay in touch with," Spencer said during Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb's latest podcast. "And going to TGS and seeing the excitement for new things and old things and the rebirth of things is just great."

Another reason Microsoft is attending TGS 2013 is to meet with Japanese developers about the company's new independent developer program, ID @ Xbox, Spencer said.

"I think it's going to be really good to connect with the developers there; have great conversations about what could happen," Spencer said.

The 2013 Tokyo Game Show takes place September 19-22. GameSpot will be in attendance at the event. Microsoft is bringing 30 games to the show, including eight playable Xbox One titles.

Rockstar says not to install GTAV "play" disc on Xbox 360
Sep 16th 2013, 13:54

Do not install the GTAV "play" disc on Xbox 360 for "optimal performance," says Rockstar on Twitter.

Rockstar Games has encouraged Xbox 360 owners of Grand Theft Auto V not to install one of the game's two discs to their hard drive.

The Xbox 360 version of GTAV ships on two discs, one labelled as "install" and the other as "play." The game features a mandatory 8GB installation from the first disc, with the second required to sit in a user's disc tray in order to play.

Some users might have considered installing the play disc to their hard drive too, but Rockstar Games advised against this on Twitter if users want "optimal performance."

Rockstar has said that it will have more information on this on its support site when the game launches tomorrow.

Over the weekend Rockstar said it was "investigating" cases of the game being sold early.

The PlayStation 3 version of the game also requires a mandatory installation, but the game ships on one Blu-Ray disc.

GTAV PC petition passes 350,000 signatures
Sep 16th 2013, 13:04

Change.org petition calling on Rockstar Games to release open-world game on PC hits new signature milestone.

The Change.org petition calling on Rockstar Games to release Grand Theft Auto V on PC has surpassed 350,000 signatures. This is up from 200,000 signatures in July.

GTAV launches exclusively for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 tomorrow. GameSpot's review hits at 10 a.m. EDT today.

According to Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser, a PC version of the open-world game is "up for consideration," though that's all the company has said on the matter.

The petition says it is a "big shame" that GTAV is not announced for the PC, specifically calling out the modding community being a "huge part" of PC gaming. "Modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have," a line from the petition reads.

A since-removed Rockstar Leeds job advertisement sought a programmer to help bring the company's "latest titles" to PC. This would potentially include GTAV.

The PC iteration of Grand Theft Auto IV launched about eight months after the console versions shipped in April 2008.

Nintendo "very aware" of requests for unified Wii U, 3DS account systems
Sep 16th 2013, 13:02

Company says it has "definitely" heard internal and external feedback regarding lack of unified account systems for Wii U and 3DS.

Nintendo is "very much aware" of requests for unified Wii U and 3DS account systems, according Nintendo of America manager of business development Dan Adelman.

"We don't have anything new to announce, unfortunately, other than we've definitely heard that feedback many times from both inside and outside the company," Adelman told Destructoid. "It's definitely something that we're very much aware of."

"All development for the infrastructure really happens out of Japan, so we've kind of communicated this need in the market, and they're very much aware of it and working towards really just always improving the eShop," he added.

Currently, all Wii U and 3DS downloads are linked to the hardware itself. By comparison, downloaded content for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are tied to a profile that can be transferred to a new system.

Bungie on cross-platform development -- "The perks outweigh the pain"
Sep 16th 2013, 12:43

Destiny developer says process is "hard" but worth it because it means new players can experience a Bungie game.

After developing only for Microsoft platforms for years with the Halo series, Bungie Studios is releasing shared-world shooter Destiny not only for Microsoft and Sony platforms, but also across console generations.

Asked in the latest Bungie Mail Sack about this process, the studio said development of this nature is no easy task, but is ultimately worth it because it means more gamers can experience a Bungie-developed game.

"We get to invite more people to explore those worlds! Our community can welcome new players who may have never experienced a Bungie game before," the developer said. "Developing a cross-platform game is hard, but the perks outweigh the pain."

Also in the feature, Bungie reiterated that Destiny will be a game that appeals to "busy" people, like those with family and full-time job responsibilities and may only have a few hours per week to spend on video games.

"Destiny will be a game that you can fit into your life. It won’t be a chore or a grind. We’re creating an adventure that will be fun. We’re building a world you can visit when it suits you," Bungie said. "You won’t have to worry about being left behind if you don’t clock in on a daily basis. Every Guardian who answers the call to defend the last safe city will get out of their experience what they put into it."

Destiny launches in 2014 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Bungie COO Pete Parsons recently said that the game has the potential to surpass the impact of Halo and sit on people's shelves next to franchises like Harry Potter, Star Wars, and Lord of the Rings.

Rainbow Six Vegas free on Xbox Live
Sep 16th 2013, 12:18

2006 Ubisoft shooter now free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers through the end of the month.

Ubisoft's 2006 shooter Rainbow Six Vegas is now free (normally $20) to download on Xbox Live as part of Microsoft's Games with Gold promotion.

The game is free for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers through the end of the month. It replaces Magic 2013, which was free on Xbox Live from September 1-15.

Gamers in South Africa will receive Shadowrun instead of Rainbow Six Vegas, Microsoft said.

The free games are part of Microsoft's new Games With Gold program that gives Xbox Live Gold subscribers two free titles--to keep--each month until December 31.

Microsoft has not announced October's free games yet.

Mutant League Football returns on Kickstarter
Sep 16th 2013, 12:02

Michael Mendheim launches crowdfunding campaign for sequel to Sega Genesis professional football parody game.

Mutant League Football creator Michael Mendheim has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a sequel to the Sega Genesis professional football parody game.

The campaign is seeking $750,000 by October 16. At press time, funding stands at $130 from three backers. The game is scheduled to launch in summer 2015.

The untitled Mutant League Football sequel is aiming for release on Xbox 360, PC, and mobile platforms. The game will be released on the Xbox One if funding hits $2,250,000 and PlayStation 4 if funding reaches $3,000,000.

According to its description, the Mutant League Football sequel will be the "most violent game ever played" in the series. It will pay homage to the Sega Genesis original, while building on that foundation with "deep strategy, creature customization, over-the-top violence," and "gross out humor."

The original Mutant League Football was published by Electronic Arts. Mendheim said it would have been "terrific" to work with the company again, but made clear that he was instead interested in having "full creative control" over the new game.

The new Mutant League Football game will allow gamers to play alone or go head-to-head with others. Players will be able to adjust the length of game and levels of violence, and participate in a single game, playoffs, or a full season mode.

In addition to the moment-to-moment football tactics like deciding when to punt or go for it on 4th down, players will also need to be wary of the health of their players. The Mutant League Football sequel will also feature "enforcer" players, field obstacles, hazards, player weapons, and "dirty trick plays" like throwing a bomb.

Mendheim is working with Tony Hawk Shred developer Robomodo on the Mutant League Football sequel. The Chicago-based independent developer will help with art direction and production.
