Sony to launch own VR headset for PlayStation 4 - Report
Sep 3rd 2013, 14:36

Sony to launch its own virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 and compete with the Oculus Rift, according to sources.

The next chapter in Sony's next-gen technology strategy might come in the form of a custom virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4, reports have claimed.

Sony's virtual reality plans for the PlayStation 4, reported by both Eurogamer and CVG, are said to involve hardware technology similar to the Oculus Rift headset, which has been a source of intense industry interest since its barnstorming Kickstarter success in August 2012. A consumer version of the Oculus Rift has yet to be dated.

A VR version of Evolution Studios' PS4 launch racer Driveclub is said to be in an internal prototype stage, with players able to experience a VR cockpit. Based in Liverpool, England, Evolution Studios is also close to Sony's Worldwide Studios Stereoscopic 3D team.

CVG says that the Sony VR headset will be unveiled at Tokyo Game Show later this month, while Eurogamer says Sony will unveil the product in 2014, after the release of the PlayStation 4. Both sites report that the company originally planned to show the headset at Gamescom 2013 last week, but those plans were scrapped at the last minute.

Tokyo Games Show 2013 will run from September 19 through September 22.

As a company, Sony has pre-existing experience with VR. Sony currently sells the HMZ-T2 in Europe and Canada for £999, with the headset designed for use with 3D games and movies. The HMZ-T2 features two 720p OLED screens and incorporates a 5.1 surround sound system.

Sony's gaming VR headset will be sold separately from the PlayStation 4 hardware, CVG adds.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

A Sony representative declined to comment.

Xbox One wasn't rushed, says Microsoft
Sep 3rd 2013, 14:33

Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb says the Xbox One program has been in development for years; "Did we have a few challenges between May and August? Sure."

Microsoft's Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has spoken out to defend the Xbox One against claims that its development was rushed to match the PlayStation 4.

Writing on Reddit, Hryb said this is not the case, though he did admit that Microsoft has faced some "challenges" in the past few months.

"The Xbox One program has been in development for years, so calling it 'Rushed' is incorrect," Hryb said. "Did we have a few challenges between May and August? Sure. But we are working on our own schedule--not anyone else's."

"At Gamescom, every game in the Xbox booth was running on final Xbox One hardware. Every. Single. One," he added. "That would paint a very different take on the being 'rushed.'"

Separately, Microsoft chief product officer Marc Whitten told IGN that downloaded games will not be able to be pre-loaded prior to release, though he said the company will do "much more" in this area moving forward.

Steam allows players to pre-load certain games so users can begin playing immediately at 12:01 a.m. on the day of release.

Whitten also addressed the Xbox One working as a Windows Media Center Extender, saying the console "isn't a native Media Center Extender." He added that Microsoft will "continue to work to enable more ways for everyone to get the television they want over the life of the program."

Currently, the Xbox 360 can be used as a Windows Media Center Extender, allowing users stream media from a PC to their console.

The Xbox One launches in November. Microsoft said recently at PAX that it believes the console is worth $100 more than the PlayStation 4.

Square Enix offers compensation for Final Fantasy XIV server woes
Sep 3rd 2013, 11:29

Servers excessively strained as relaunched MMO fails to predict how many people would be interested in the game.

Square Enix has offered players of relaunched MMO Final Fantasy XIV Online: A Realm Reborn an additional seven days of free play time to compensate for the problems caused by the game's excessively strained servers.

The revamped MMO has been rendered unplayable for many players since its launch last week, as Square Enix misjudged how many people would be interested in playing the game.

Players yet to redeem their trial will be eligible for the additional seven days if they register before September 9, Square Enix adds.

The beleaguered servers will be taken offline from 17:00 PDT on September 3 to 03:00 PDT on September 4 for Square Enix to perform maintenance. The company says the work will increase the amount of available Words, increase the amount of logins available on each server, and reduce stress on its Duty Finder servers.

"Because login and character creation restrictions have hindered our ability to provide quality service, all Final Fantasy 14 service accounts will receive an additional seven days of free play time," Square Enix said.

"Furthermore, users who have yet to enter their registration codes will receive an additional seven-day trial should they register before 11.59 pm (PDT) on September 9, 2013. Moving forward, we will continue monitoring the servers to ensure that quality service and support are provided in a timely manner."

Microsoft buys Nokia's mobile phone business for $7.2 billion
Sep 3rd 2013, 10:55

€5.4 billion deal for Nokia's devices and services business is expected to conclude in early 2014, and will include the Lumia brand.

Microsoft has bought Nokia's mobile phone business, including the Lumia brand, for €5.4 billion ($7.2 billion/£4.6 billion).

The deal includes all of Nokia's devices and services business and will see 32 thousand Nokia employees transfer to Microsoft, with 4,700 employees in Finland and 18,300 working on manufacturing, assembly and packaging of Nokia products. The deal is expected to be concluded in early 2014.

Microsoft announced a partnership with Nokia in February 2011, with both companies facing stiff competition in the smartphone market from the likes of Apple, HTC, and Samsung.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, who will leave the company in the next 12 months, announced that Nokia CEO Stephen Elop will take charge of Microsoft's expanded Devices team, including Xbox One.

Current head of Microsoft's Devices and Studios team, Julie Larson-Green, will continue to run the current Devices and Studios team until Microsoft fully acquires Nokia, and will focus on launching the Xbox One in November this year. Larson-Green will join Elop's team following the acquisition.

"It's a bold step into the future--a win-win for employees, shareholders and consumers of both companies," said Ballmer.

"Bringing these great teams together will accelerate Microsoft's share and profits in phones, and strengthen the overall opportunities for both Microsoft and our partners across our entire family of devices and services."

Sony explains European Gaikai delays
Sep 3rd 2013, 09:55

Cloud service technology set to roll out across America in 2014, but poor broadband in Europe is causing Sony problems.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan has discussed the challenges in bringing streaming service Gaikai to Europe.

Gaikai is due to roll out across North America in early 2014. In an interview with Edge, Ryan reiterated the idea behind the cloud technology. "So the plan is to begin with North America next year and the plan is to provide a streaming service that will allow for PS3 content initially to be streamed to firstly PS4 then PS Vita and then PS3," he said.

Ryan added that the challenges of high-speed broadband in Europe were causing problems for the company.

"Now, and I touched upon these issues of broadband in Europe during the [Gamescom 2013] presentation," he said, "Europe is of course on the roadmap for that service to be deployed at some point in the future, but for reasons outside of our control we don't yet have a timeline for it."

Explaining why Sony didn't mention Gaikai at all during its Gamescom 2013 press conference, Ryan said that he didn't want to discuss the service at a European show without more details.

"At a show which is now pretty global in its reach but primarily aimed at a European audience, we didn't really want to start talking about the virtues of this great cloud-based service without knowing exactly when it'll come to Europe.

"We've got a roadmap, there's just a few bumps along the road that need to be ironed out."

During Sony's Gamescom 2013 press conference, Ryan announced that Sony was creating partnerships with European internet service providers to allow PlayStation services uninterrupted bandwidth.

Sony purchased Gaikai in 2012 for $380 million.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

God of War writer on challenge of bringing Kratos to the big-screen
Sep 3rd 2013, 02:24

Marianne Krawczyk says "dissonance" between game Kratos and movie Kratos would be jarring for viewers already familiar with the action franchise.

A gamer-approved God of War movie would be a challenge to pull off because players already have expectations for how Kratos should act and sound, according to series writer Marianne Krawczyk.

Speaking today during a PAX Prime panel, Krawczyk recalled that when she was younger she very much enjoyed the Garfield comic strip and was looking forward to the TV show. However, when the show debuted, she heard his voice and it "completely threw" her. She never watched the show again.

Krawczyk said a God of War movie could suffer, at least for fans of the series, for the same reason.

"And I think, if [Kratos] ever makes it to the big-screen, there will be that similar dissonance," she said. "The player has a personal experience with him, and then he's going to be embodied by a different actor, he's going to have a different voice, he's going to say a lot more words."

"So I think it will be hard to get that across," she added. "But I hope they will someday. We don't know."

Universal Studios is currently producing a God of War movie with a pair of Saw writers, not Krawczyk.. According to the latest version of its draft, the big-screen take on the series will improve on films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals by taking a step "in a more bold direction."

The current status of the God of War movie is unknown.

Krawczyk also offered a critique of the recent Disney-produced Prince of Persia movie, 2010's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. She said had the film not been rooted in source material people were already familiar with, it would have stood a better chance to be more commercially successful.

"I think if it was just a movie called Prince of Persia starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and it didn't have source material, it probably would have been fine. I saw it [and] it didn't suck," Krawczyk said. "But I think it was received poorly because the player already had a relationship with who they thought the character was and it was actually a different story than the Sands of Time game. And the Sands of Time game had a better story. I had that to compare it to. But if I didn't, I'd say it's a fine popcorn movie."

Gearbox working on two new IPs for next-gen
Sep 2nd 2013, 22:35

CEO Randy Pitchford confirms Borderlands studio working on brand-new games for next-generation consoles.

Today during a PAX Prime panel, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that the studio is working on two new franchises for the next-generation of consoles.

These are in addition to other new projects the company is working on, Pitchford said. During the panel, Pitchford joked, "Should we announce Borderlands 3?"

Gearbox Software confirmed last year that Brothers in Arms: Furious Four will be reimagined as a new IP.

Also during the panel, Gearbox Software gave new details about its 2013 Community Day event. This year's event will take place on September 14 and will be streamed online.

Those who purchase the "digital bonus pack" for the Community Day event will be able to stream the event in high definition and will receive access to a closed beta for one of the upcoming Gearbox Software games. In addition, these users will receive a free download of Homeworld HD.

A price for the bonus pack was not announced.

Borderlands 2 was released in September 2012 and has shipped over 7 million copies to date. A Game of the Year version will be released in October.

Nintendo on Minecraft's absence from Wii U, 3DS
Sep 2nd 2013, 18:22

Mario maker says "we're big fans" of Mojang, but has nothing to announce about open-ended sandbox game coming to Nintendo platforms.

Mojang has released its megahit Minecraft on various platforms, including Xbox 360, PC, and mobile devices, but Nintendo systems have been left out so far.

Asked what Nintendo can say regarding the potential for Minecraft to come to the Wii U or 3DS, business development manager Dan Adelman told GameSpot, "What can we say on that front? [laughs]."

Nintendo senior manager of marketing for licensing Damon Baker added, "We're big fans. We have a continuing relationship with Mojang, and respect all the work that they're doing, but no announcements at this time."

Baker said Nintendo speaks with and keeps track of "what everybody's doing," noting one of the reasons the company is at PAX Prime this year is to have conversations with these developers "whether they're making games for other platforms or not."

"We've got our own favorites that we've had conversations with," Baker said. "So I think it's always a work in progress."

Mojang developer Jens Bergensten said in March that a version of Minecraft for the Wii U would be "very unlikely."

Check back later for more from GameSpot's conversation with Adelman and Baker.
