Bethesda: Nintendo should follow example set by Sony and Microsoft
Sep 3rd 2013, 02:47

Vice president of public relations and marketing at the Fallout and Elder Scrolls studio has criticised Nintendo's approach to third-party involvement.

Bethesda Softworks vice president of public relations and marketing Pete Hines has said that the lack of third-party support for Nintendo's Wii U console is a result of the company's approach.

Speaking on an episode of GameTrailers' Bonus Round as transcribed by Gimme Gimme Games, Hines pointed to Sony and Microsoft as examples, saying that Nintendo must "do what Sony and Microsoft have been doing with us for a long time" in communicating with third-party publishers.

"They involved us very early on…they say, 'here's what we're doing, here's what we're planning, here's how we think it's going to work' to hear what we thought," Hines said.

"You have to spend an unbelievable amount of time upfront doing that. If you're just going sort [of] deciding, 'we're going to make a box and this is how it works and you should make games for it'. Well, no. No is my answer; I'm going to focus on other ones that better support what it is we're trying to do."

Last year, Hines commented on the lack of Bethesda support for the Wii U, saying that the company mantra has been, and continues to be, to launch games on platforms that support them. More recently, Hines pointed to hardware as one of a "number of factors" for the lack of Bethesda titles on the Wii U.

The Wii U has sold 3.45 million units worldwide to date, below Nintendo's expectations for the platform. The company hopes to spur sales--and, in turn, third-party interest in the system--by launching several first-party titles this year.

God of War writer on challenge of bringing Kratos to the big-screen
Sep 3rd 2013, 02:24

Marianne Krawczyk says "dissonance" between game Kratos and movie Kratos would be jarring for viewers already familiar with the action franchise.

A gamer-approved God of War movie would be a challenge to pull off because players already have expectations for how Kratos should act and sound, according to series writer Marianne Krawczyk.

Speaking today during a PAX Prime panel, Krawczyk recalled that when she was younger she very much enjoyed the Garfield comic strip and was looking forward to the TV show. However, when the show debuted, she heard his voice and it "completely threw" her. She never watched the show again.

Krawczyk said a God of War movie could suffer, at least for fans of the series, for the same reason.

"And I think, if [Kratos] ever makes it to the big-screen, there will be that similar dissonance," she said. "The player has a personal experience with him, and then he's going to be embodied by a different actor, he's going to have a different voice, he's going to say a lot more words."

"So I think it will be hard to get that across," she added. "But I hope they will someday. We don't know."

Universal Studios is currently producing a God of War movie with a pair of Saw writers, not Krawczyk.. According to the latest version of its draft, the big-screen take on the series will improve on films like Clash of the Titans and Immortals by taking a step "in a more bold direction."

The current status of the God of War movie is unknown.

Krawczyk also offered a critique of the recent Disney-produced Prince of Persia movie, 2010's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. She said had the film not been rooted in source material people were already familiar with, it would have stood a better chance to be more commercially successful.

"I think if it was just a movie called Prince of Persia starring Jake Gyllenhaal, and it didn't have source material, it probably would have been fine. I saw it [and] it didn't suck," Krawczyk said. "But I think it was received poorly because the player already had a relationship with who they thought the character was and it was actually a different story than the Sands of Time game. And the Sands of Time game had a better story. I had that to compare it to. But if I didn't, I'd say it's a fine popcorn movie."

Cloud 9 takes League of Legends Season 3 North American Playoffs
Sep 2nd 2013, 23:55

Cloud 9 beats Dignitas and Team SoloMid in finals; Cloud 9 heading into World Championships as number one seed.

Professional League of Legends team Cloud 9 continued its dominance from the League of Legends Season 3 North American Summer Season into this weekend…s Playoffs at PAX, going undefeated to win $50,000 and the number one NA seed heading into the World Championships.

Cloud 9 swept both Dignitas in the semi-finals, and Team SoloMid (TSM) in the finals; both teams they have never lost to this season. Cloud 9 is a combined 13-0 in map wins over both teams for the Summer Season and playoffs combined, and 30-3 against all teams in the league.

"We practice with each other a lot, we know what each other…s picks are," Cloud 9 AD Carry Zachary "Sneaky" Scuderi told GameSpot about their finals against TSM. "The first game was probably the closest…but the rest of them were a lot more one-sided. We just played our game."

The win here advances Cloud 9 to the quarter-final stage at the World Championship with Korea…s Najin Sword B, Taiwan…s Gamania Bears, and the winners of the Chinese Championship. These four teams will wait it out as 10 teams face off in the group stages, divided into two groups of five, with the top two teams in group advancing to the quarter-finals.

"I think it…ll be good for us," Scuderi said about their advantage going into the world championships. "The pressure will make us play better, honestly."

TSM and Vulcun will join Cloud 9 as the North American representatives, as TSM was able to get past internal struggles to capture victories over longtime rivals Counter Logic Gaming in the opening match, and Vulcun in the semi-finals. Vulcun won a deciding match against Dignitas for the last spot. Counter Logic Gaming and Curse failed to make it to the world championships.

"We knew without a doubt we…d make it to worlds," said Vulcun…s Benny "SychoSid" Hung. "Dignitas definitely didn…t make it easy."

Tickets for the League of Legends World Championships Finals, held at the Los Angeles Staples Center in October, sold out in less than an hour after first being released. A second batch was sold out within minutes this weekend.

"Last year we sold out for the Galen Center in two weeks" said Riot Games eSports Manager Nick Allen. "People just really want to go to the World Championship…lots of eSports fans from all over the world. We have to keep growing bigger and better. The Staples Center, while big, can…t hold as many fans as we have all around the world. We need to get a bigger space so we can handle that."

The group stages for the World Championships will begin on September 15 at a studio location, with the semi-finals held at the Galen Center, and the finals at Staples Center on October 4. The live broadcast can be watched on GameSpot during the event, and GameSpot eSports will be providing onsite coverage for the entirety of the playoffs.

Gearbox working on two new IPs for next-gen
Sep 2nd 2013, 22:35

CEO Randy Pitchford confirms Borderlands studio working on brand-new games for next-generation consoles.

Today during a PAX Prime panel, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford revealed that the studio is working on two new franchises for the next-generation of consoles.

These are in addition to other new projects the company is working on, Pitchford said. During the panel, Pitchford joked, "Should we announce Borderlands 3?"

Gearbox Software confirmed last year that Brothers in Arms: Furious Four will be reimagined as a new IP.

Also during the panel, Gearbox Software gave new details about its 2013 Community Day event. This year's event will take place on September 14 and will be streamed online.

Those who purchase the "digital bonus pack" for the Community Day event will be able to stream the event in high definition and will receive access to a closed beta for one of the upcoming Gearbox Software games. In addition, these users will receive a free download of Homeworld HD.

A price for the bonus pack was not announced.

Borderlands 2 was released in September 2012 and has shipped over 7 million copies to date. A Game of the Year version will be released in October.

Microsoft has described Minecraft as a "beast," and will release the game on Xbox One.

Minecraft is also coming to the PlayStation 4. Nintendo recently addressed the game's absence from the company's platforms.

Eight Xbox One controllers can be synced at once
Sep 2nd 2013, 19:38

Microsoft reveals next-gen console will support double the number of connected controllers as Xbox 360; will have 30-foot wireless range.

According to an updated Xbox.com product page (via Videogamer), up to eight Xbox One controllers can be connected to the system at any point in time. This is up from four on the Xbox 360.

It was also revealed that Xbox One controllers will have a 30-foot wireless range.

Sony has not yet said how many DualShock 4 controllers can be connected to the PlayStation 4 at once. The PlayStation 3 supports seven controllers simultaneously.

Microsoft previously announced that infrared LEDs in the Xbox One controllers will allow the console to detect, via Kinect, which user is holding the input and then match profile information. One Xbox One controller is included with every system, while additional pads can be purchased for $60.

The Xbox One launches in November. Microsoft said this week at PAX that it believes the console is worth $100 more than the PlayStation 4.
