TMNT: Out of the Shadows launching this summer
Mar 5th 2013, 17:26

New third-person brawler from Activision releasing on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC later this year.

Activision today announced Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows will launch this summer on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC. It is the first of three planned TMNT games from Activision.

Based on Nickelodeon's new animated series, TMNT: Out of the Shadows is a third-person brawler set in New York City that lets gamers play as Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. In addition, four-player online co-op will be supported.

TMNT: Out of the Shadows is in development at Red Fly Studio, the Austin, Texas outfit behind Mushroom Men: The Spore Wars, and the Wii versions of Ghostbusters: The Video Game and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II.

Details on the next two TMNT titles from Activision were not divulged.

Japanese PS Vita sales quadruple since price cut
Mar 5th 2013, 16:46

After price cut in island nation, sales of portable device jump by factor of four.

The recent PlayStation Vita price cut in Japan has proven popular. GameWatch reports (translated by Gematsu) that Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano revealed sales of the portable have jumped by a factor of four since the price cut went into effect February 28.

Speaking as part of a One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 presentation, Kawano said PS Vita sales have quadrupled in the past week, compared to the two-week window before the price cut.

Sony cut the price of both PS Vita models in Japan to ¥19,980 ($214).

Gamers should not expect the price cut to be extended to other markets anytime soon. Sony Worldwide Studios president said last month that Sony has no plans for a similar price drop in North America. Decisions about price drops are made on a region-by-region basis, he said at the time.

'Thief' announced for next-gen platforms in 2014
Mar 5th 2013, 16:28

Eidos Montreal confirms new game coming to PC and next-generation platforms in 2014.

Update:

Game Informer has confirmed "Thief" as the cover of its April issue. "Series hero Garrett returns to the Gothic, industrial metropolis known simply as the City to steal any and everything that will make him richer. Unfortunately, the City is broiling with social tension as it is ravaged by a plague and lorded over by a political tyrant known as the Baron. In order to survive his adventures, Garrett will have to pay attention to his environment and make use of the many possible paths through each of the game's levels."

The magazine also confirmed the title would be launching for PS4, PC and "other next-gen platforms" in 2014.

Original story:

Screenshots of a next-generation Thief 4 have leaked online.

The game is expected to be officially unveiled imminently, although user GamesManiac on Russian social network VK.com seems to have unearthed the images early.

The 16 screenshots appear to be scans from a magazine, with GamesManiac claiming Thief 4 will be released in 2014 for PC and next-generation consoles.

Four of the images are from a first-person perspective. Lockpicking is also shown, along with various other sneaky activities in a world of cobbled streets and murky lighting.

The critically-acclaimed Thief series has not been seen since 2004's Thief: Deadly Shadows, though Thief 4 has been confirmed to be in the works at Eidos Montreal since 2009.

All previous games in the series have cast the player as Garrett, a master thief in a steampunk and supernatural world.

Dead Space series cancelled by EA after poor sales of Dead Space 3 - Report
Mar 5th 2013, 16:10

[UPDATE] An unnamed source says development on the Dead Space series has been shut down; EA says the original report is "patently false."

Update: EA has told GameSpot the VideoGamer report is "patently false." "While we have not released sales data for Dead Space 3, we are proud of the game and it continues to be an important IP to EA," added the publisher.

Original Story: EA has axed the Dead Space series, a new report suggests.

Lower-than-expected sales of Dead Space 3 caused the publisher to put the series to rest, a source told VideoGamer.com.

Dead Space 4 was allegedly in pre-production at Visceral Games and Visceral Montreal, with the latter studio now shut completely in a restructuring move.

The studio's troubled development of Dead Space 3 was also mentioned, suggesting that the game was subjected to multiple budget cuts throughout its production and was almost cancelled outright at one point.

A switch from weapon-specific ammo to generic ammo was also done to facilitate the game's contentious addition of microtransactions, the source says. Visceral was also allegedly told to reign in the horror aspects and follow an action-focused approach similar to Mass Effect.

EA Games Label president Frank Gibeau has previously said its AAA games need to sell upwards of 5 million copies if they want to survive. Dead Space 3 managed to top the UK charts at its launch, although was outsold by its predecessor which launched in a similar period.

Earlier this year EA put the Medal of Honor to rest after poor sales.

Dead Space 3 will get a slice of single-player downloadable content, Awakening, in March.

EA said to GameSpot that it does not comment on rumour or speculation.

No Guild Wars II expansions in development
Mar 5th 2013, 15:39

ArenaNet confirms no add-ons for MMORPG currently in development, though some could come in the future.

No Guild Wars II expansions are currently in development, game director Colin Johanson explained to IGN, noting this may not always be the case.

"Expansions are definitely something that we’ll potentially look at in the future," Johanson said. "We don’t have a timetable on it. We’re open to it, but I think our major focus as a studio is making the living world concept as strong as possibly can for the players that we’ve got."

The 2005 original Guild Wars welcomed three expansions: Guild Wars Factions, Guild Wars Nightfall, and Guild Wars Eye of the North.

Asked if ArenaNet would instead consider developing a standalone third entry in the series, Johanson said gamers are more likely to see Guild Wars II grow and evolve.

"We want to be able to have teams that are literally developing new, innovative features that change the way that you play our game and grow that experience so it literally feels like you don’t leave Guild Wars 2; Guild Wars 2 becomes Guild Wars 2.5 or Guild Wars 3 and it continues to grow," he said.

Snoop Dogg's Way of the Dogg announced for XBLA, PSN
Mar 5th 2013, 15:25

Way of the Dogg is a rhythm-action combat game being developed by UK studio Echo Peak.

UK studio Echo Peak has unveiled its first title Way of the Dogg, a rhythm-action combat game designed in collaboration with Snoop Dogg.

The game will be released later this year for Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network alongside iOS and Android.

Every level in the Kung Fu-inspired Way of the Dogg is a fight against a different character matched to one of Snoop's tracks. Two screenshots for the game were released, showing Snoop Dogg kicking an adversary in the face behind a series of on-screen commands and star ratings.

’Everyone knows that Snoop is down with the biggest and best video games whether it’s droppin’ my hits on the soundtrack or showing the world I can go toe-to-toe with the best fighters on the street," said Snoop Dogg in a statement.

"Way of the Dogg is the first true gamification of my music," Dogg added. "It’s the way you live, it’s the way you do what you do and captures the beat, the rhythm and the spirit of my music. It’s not just about who you are or where you’ve been but where you are headed to."

"This game shows how we evolve as individuals and they've incorporated the journey of my own personal reincarnation as Snoop Lion into my character, the environments and the path that players have to follow,’ concluded Snoop Dogg.

Multi-platinum hip-hop artist Snoop Dogg recently rebranded himself as Snoop Lion, and he also had his own stage in Namco Bandai's Tekken Tag Tournament 2.

Next-gen Assassin's Creed IV versions will have 'connected features'
Mar 5th 2013, 14:45

On top of beefed up graphics and physics, director says next-gen versions of upcoming action game will feature unspecified network-based features.

In addition to souped up graphics and physics, the next-generation versions of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will feature various "connected features," according to creative director Jean Guesdon (via CVG). The nature of these features remains vague.

"Next-gen versions will bring to the players new connected features allowing them to feel that even if they remain 'single player' it will be better to be a 'single connected player'," Guesdon said. "I mean, that next-gen consoles will allow players to have a solo experience that benefit the presence of a huge community."

The PlayStation 4 version of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is the only announced next-generation version thus far. Ubisoft has teased the game will release on "other" next-gen platforms, suggesting the title will come to Microsoft's still unannounced Xbox 720.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will launch October 29 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PS4, PC, and Wii U. The PS4 version will receive "exclusive features." Its development is spread across eight Ubisoft studios: Montreal, Singapore, Sofia, Annecy, Kiev, Quebec, Bucharest, and Montpellier.

New Tomb Raider film coming from The Departed studio
Mar 5th 2013, 13:47

Crystal Dynamics working with GK Films on new Lara Croft film that will not be continuation of Angelina Jolie movies.

A new Tomb Raider film is on the way from GK Films, the company that produced Academy Award Best Picture winners The Departed and Argo. Variety reports that Crystal Dynamics is working "closely" with GK Films instead of merely licensing off the rights.

’They are working from this new take that we’ve given them,’ Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher said of GK Films. ’It’s a good partnership. We’re seeing the challenges through the same lens.’

Gallagher explained that the upcoming Tomb Raider film will not be a continuation of 2001's original Lara Croft: Tomb Raider or 2003 follow-up Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, both of which starred Angelina Jolie.

’It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise,’ Gallagher said.

It was not mentioned if Jolie will reprise her role as the lethal archaeologist Croft for the upcoming film or if the studio will bring in someone new. Californication actress Camilla Luddington provided the voice work and motion capture for Croft in the latest game.

Tomb Raider released today for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. For more, check out GameSpot's review.

BioWare San Francisco closed - Report
Mar 5th 2013, 13:06

Source says Dragon Age: Legends developer shuttered, with as many as 30 staffers laid off.

BioWare San Francisco has been closed and all 25 to 30 employees laid off, a source within the studio told GamesRadar. Formerly known as EA2D, the studio was perhaps best known for Facebook game Dragon Age: Legends and the browser-based Mirror's Edge 2D.

BioWare shut off the servers for Dragon Age: Legends last year, though an offline-only version is currently available.

EA2D became BioWare San Francisco in August 2011 as part of a company-wide reorganization. The unnamed source claimed owner Electronic Arts believed it was "too expensive" to develop mobile games in Redwood Shores, California, the company's headquarters.

A landing page for BioWare San Francisco remains visible on the BioWare website, though no jobs listings are posted. EA was not immediately available to comment.

Resident Evil: Revelations details ultra-tough Infernal mode for console
Mar 5th 2013, 11:19

New ultra-difficulty mode in upcoming console version of Resident Evil: Revelations changes enemy and item placement.

The upcoming Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U versions of Resident Evil: Revelations will feature an especially challenging Infernal difficulty mode, which Capcom has detailed in a new trailer.

Alongside making the game harder, Infernal mode also remixes enemy and item placement.

Resident Evil: Revelations was released on the 3DS last year. The game was awarded a respectable 8.5 in its GameSpot review.

"Resident Evil: Revelations is a thoroughly successful crossbreeding of old-school chills and new-school action," said reviewer Jane about the 3DS version last year.

The console version of Resident Evil: Revelations will be released on May 21 in North America, and May 24 in Europe.
