Report: Sandy Hook shooter a 'deranged' gamer
Mar 18th 2013, 15:35

New report claims assailant chose elementary school because it was easiest way to score "points."

The Sandy Hooker shooter, who killed 20 children and six adults during a schoolhouse massacre in Connecticut three months ago, was a "deranged" gamer who specifically targeted the elementary school so as to "outscore" past mass murderers. That's according to a new report from the New York Daily News, which spoke with a law enforcement source.

The report claims the shooter had a spreadsheet detailing the names and number of people killed and the weapons--including their make and model--used in past attacks. This source reportedly attended the International Association of Police Chiefs and Colonels last week and heard testimony about the Sandy Hook shooting from CT state police colonel Danny Stebbins.

"They don't believe this was just a spreadsheet. They believe it was a score sheet,” the source said. "This was the work of a video gamer, and that it was his intent to put his own name at the very top of that list. They believe that he picked an elementary school because he felt it was a point of least resistance, where he could rack up the greatest number of kills. That”s what (the Connecticut police) believe."

The source further noted that the shooter killed himself during the attack so as not to give away these "points."

"They believe that (the shooter) believed that it was the way to pick up the easiest points. It's why he didn”t want to be killed by law enforcement. In the code of a gamer, even a deranged gamer like this little bastard, if somebody else kills you, they get your points. They believe that's why he killed himself."

In the months following the Sandy Hook massacre, there has been increased political discussion about the relationship between virtual violence and real-world violence. In addition, a recent Harris Poll found that 58 percent of parents believe games contribute to violent tendencies in teenagers.

EA teases Battlefield 4 news for March 27
Mar 18th 2013, 14:39

Publisher's "Prepare 4 Battle" video suggests reveal slated for later this month during Game Developers Conference.

The official Battlefield Twitter account today posted a short video teasing Battlefield 4 news for March 27 during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Publisher Electronic Arts is holding a Battlefield 4 media event the day before on March 26.

The video, made with the new Vine video service and said to be "straight from the editing suite," contains the same color scheme as last week's media invitation. The video also includes the sound of what appears to be a tank starting its engine.

EA announced Battlefield 4 last July, revealing a beta for the game will launch during fall 2013. Those who purchased the underperforming Medal of Honor: Warfighter are guaranteed access to the beta.

Battlefield 4 may not be the only new franchise entry in the works. A report from May suggested series developer DICE was at work on a new entry in the spinoff series, Battlefield: Bad Company 3.

Bungie not worried about Destiny server issues
Mar 18th 2013, 14:08

Developer says it will be prepared for "anxious mobs of players," teases gamers can play as aliens in upcoming shooter.

In the wake of SimCity's troubled launch this month, Bungie has said it is not worried about an influx of users crippling Destiny's servers at release.

"This isn't our first rodeo," the developer said as part of its latest Mail Sack. "Bungie is no stranger to anxious mobs of players who rush home after a midnight launch and put our best-laid plans to the test."

Bungie's claim is not without merit, as the developer has overseen the generally smooth launches of a number of high-profile and multiplayer-centric Halo titles. In the case of Destiny, however, the game is exclusively an always-online experience.

Another community question posed to Bungie was whether or not Destiny would allow gamers to play as aliens. The developer was coy with its response, teasing that this may be possible.

"Not all of the aliens in Destiny are evil, just like not all humans are good," Bungie said. "We've barely scratched the surface on the character and customization options you”ll have access to in Destiny, but we”re not going to dig in any deeper today."

Destiny is expected to launch in 2014, with confirmed platforms thus far including Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4. Bungie's own preorder page suggests the game is also coming to Wii U, PC, PlayStation Vita, and the Xbox 720.

Oculus Rift backers offered refund as Doom 3 BFG Edition fails to make launch
Mar 18th 2013, 13:44

Support for VR headset in Doom 3 BFG Edition won't be ready when development kits ship.

Kickstarter backers of the upcoming Oculus Rift virtual reality headset won't be getting the pledged launch support for Doom 3 BFG Edition, the company has announced.

Backers of the Oculus Rift development kit were to receive a free copy of Doom 3 BFG Edition as an additional incentive, with the game featuring full support for the VR headset.

This has now been removed because Doom 3 BFG Edition will not support the Oculus Rift before the development kit is shipped to retailers. Instead, the company is offering all customers either $20 of Steam Wallet credit, $25 of Oculus Store credit, or a full refund.

Any affected customers can check their order status on the Oculus Order Manager website and choose their desired alternative. The choice will default to Oculus Store credit if not made by April 5.

Oculus Rift headsets are set to begin shipping to the first set of customers in the next few days, following a delay from December. The Kickstarter campaign for the headset set a funding target of $250,000 but raised $2,437,429 in August 2012.

The Last of Us spans 12-16 hours
Mar 18th 2013, 13:33

Naughty Dog says upcoming action game will be "definitely" more than 12 hours; no single-player DLC in the works.

The Last of Us will span 12-16 hours of gameplay, depending on personal play behavior, Naughty Dog told EvolveEnt in a new video interview.

"We're definitely looking at more than 12 hours; maybe 12 to 16 right now is what we're looking at," Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer said. "It really depends on how you play. You can play a little bit slower if you try to approach situations stealthy. If you really wanna explore the environment and scavenge, that's going to add more time, too."

Meyer also answered a question about downloadable content for The Last of Us. He revealed that Naughty Dog is developing only multiplayer-focused expansions, not any single-player add-ons. This is not much of a departure from the developer's recent behavior, as no entries in the Uncharted series included any story-based expansions.

The Last of Us was previously scheduled to arrive May 7, but last month was delayed five weeks to a June 14 launch exclusively for PlayStation 3. Naughty Dog explained at the time that due to the "massive" nature of the game's story, the extra development time was needed to "ensure every detail" was up to the developer's standards.

A demo for The Last of Us is in the works, with owners of God of War: Ascension receiving first access.

Take-Two going after fake GTAV beta sites
Mar 18th 2013, 12:25

Publisher files complaints with World Intellectual Property Organization over sites claiming to have beta codes for upcoming Grand Theft Auto.

Grand Theft Auto parent publisher Take-Two Interactive is going after Grand Theft Auto V scammers. As spotted by Fusible, the publisher has filed complaints with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) over two sites claiming to have beta keys for the upcoming open-world action game.

Take-Two filed the new complaints this week over www.gta5betacode.com and www.grandtheftauto5beta.com. Neither site resolves to anything at present, though Fusible reports that the former was a fully functional website, with a Facebook page and a YouTube account.

The site reportedly instructed users to share the scam with their Facebook friends to receive a beta code for GTAV. The site's Facebook page has over 1,300 likes as of this writing. The site itself was created in January and is registered to a person in Pennsylvania.

GTAV is not the only high-profile upcoming game to attract scammers. A website claiming to have beta keys for the unannounced (but rumored) Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 emerged earlier this year, followed by a fraudulent teaser website for the game last week.

Dead Island: Riptide developer explains Wii U absence
Mar 18th 2013, 10:59

Techland says it would need to rework the engine to get Dead Island: Riptide running on Nintendo's Wii U.

Current-gen open-world FPS Dead Island: Riptide won't be coming to Wii U, developer Techland has said.

Speaking in an interview with Digital Spy, creative producer Alexander Toplansky said the team would had to have either rebuilt the engine to work on Nintendo's latest hardware or simply ported the game. "One of the opportunities we had for Riptide was to continue the development of the engine, and really improve it and make a lot of refinements," said Toplansky.

"The things that are required to bring something to a new platform, you need to either really get to be integrating it deep into the engine, or you've got to [do] a port."

"Neither one of those was a satisfactory outcome for us, so we decided to do what we got platform-wise and just make sure that we can deliver the best experience we can."

Toplansky also confirmed that the studio wasn't actively planning to support the Wii U in the future, but wouldn't rule out the idea completely. "It's not something I would categorically rule out, but it's not something that's planned," he said.

Dead Island: Riptide is being released for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on April 26 in Europe, and on April 23 in North America.

The original Dead Island has now sold over 5 million copies since its launch in 2011, Deep Silver parent company Koch Media announced in February.

"While others focus on ever-increasing development budgets and driving brand messages via ballooning marketing expenditures, Deep Silver stands for hitting the zeitgeist, innovation and fresh gameplay," said Koch Media CEO Klemens Kundratitz at the time.

League of Legends breaks 5 million concurrent players
Mar 18th 2013, 10:31

PC strategy game has added two million active concurrent players in five months, says developer.

League of Legends regularly exceeds 5 million concurrent global players, developer Riot Games has announced.

The new milestone is a sizable increase over the 3 million concurrent players statistic Riot Games released for the popular MOBA back in October 2012.

Riot reports that League of Legends boasts 32 million monthly active players, with 12 million playing daily.

Valve's Dota 2, another popular MOBA, was revealed at the start of March to be digital distribution platform Steam's most played game of all time, exceeding 300,000 concurrent players.

Steam's previous record holder for concurrent players, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, managed 287,000 back in November 2011.

UK Chart: Tomb Raider first, God of War: Ascension sells half of predecessor
Mar 18th 2013, 09:55

Tomb Raider tops chart for second week running, while StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm launches in third place and SimCity drops down to fifth.

Tomb Raider has topped the UK chart for the second week in a row, with a 72 percent drop in sales from last week still enough to force Sony's God of War: Ascension into a second place finish.

God of War: Ascension managed less than half of the week one sales than its predecessor God of War III did in 2010, though it's the second-biggest opening for a title in God of War series so far.

Blizzard's StarCraft II expansion Heart of the Swarm finished third, ahead of Namco Bandai's Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 in fourth. The original Sniper never managed a chart finish above eighth.

SimCity dropped to fifth place, ahead of FIFA 13 in sixth.

Far Cry 3 charted seventh, Crysis 3 eighth, Call of Duty: Black Ops II ninth, and The Sims 3: University Life in tenth.

The Top 20 UK charts for the week ending March 16:

1. Tomb Raider

3. StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm
4. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2
