Timing of EA CEO resignation 'makes sense' says analyst
Mar 18th 2013, 23:12

Robert W. Baird industry watcher not surprised by John Riccitiello's resignation from Battlefield publisher today, says Peter Moore, Frank Gibeau leading internal candidates to take over.

John Riccitiello's resignation today from mega-publisher Electronic Arts was not an entirely surprising event, according to Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian. In a note to investors today, Sebastian said the timing of his departure from EA makes sense for a number of reasons.

"EA's controversial CEO John Riccitiello will step down as of March 30 as part of a mutual decision with the board of directors. We believe timing makes sense for a CEO transition at the end of the fiscal year, and ahead of next generation console launches and a strong [second half of 2013] title lineup (Battlefield and EA Sports)," Baird said.

Despite EA's financial challenges, which Riccitiello said were part of the reason he decided to resign, Sebastian said EA has positioned itself to benefit from the upcoming console transition.

"We believe EA is well positioned for the console refresh cycle, and the company has made progress in building a digital platform and more recently controlling expenses," Sebastian said. "However, we note that inconsistent financial performance, some high profile title flops (e.g., Star Wars: The Old Republic) and employee turnover were issues that impacted the CEO's credibility."

Lastly, Sebastian suggested that current chief operating officer Peter Moore and EA Labels president Frank Gibeau are leading internal candidates to take over as CEO. The EA Board of Directors will also consider external candidates with the the help of a "leading executive search firm." In the meantime, longtime EA executive Larry Probst will lead EA.

Pixar artists form game studio
Mar 18th 2013, 20:56

Five veterans of Oscar-winning animation studio create Steel Wool Games; first title Flyhunter expected to release this summer.

A handful of artists at Disney's Oscar-winning animation studio Pixar who worked on movies like Toy Story, The Incredibles, and Finding Nemo have created a game studio called Steel Wool Games (via Edge).

Cofounders Sequoia Blankenship, Joshua Qualtieri, Jonathan Hoffman, Andrew Lee Dayton, and Jason Peter Topolski make up the Steel Wool Games executive team. The studio counts nine additional employees, according to its website.

The five current Pixar artists have not left the award-winning animation studio, but rather are holding both jobs: creating movies during the day and games at night.

Steel Wool Games is aiming to release its first title--Flyhunter--this summer. Platforms were not specifically mentioned, though the company said it plans to develop multi-platform games.

Dayton described the studio's style to Edge as "Grimsical," noting the company's ambition to to "create worlds that are funny and whimsical but dipped in gritty tones."

Flyhunter will be published by Ripstone, the studio behind PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita game Big Sky Infinity, among others.

As for Pixar, the outfit is currently working on films Monster's University, The Good Dinosaur, and a Finding Nemo sequel.

EA CEO resigns
Mar 18th 2013, 20:16

John Riccitiello to leave FIFA, Battlefield publisher March 30 after six years as top executive; search committee for replacement to consider internal and external candidates.

Electronic Arts chief executive officer John Riccitiello will resign from his position at the FIFA and Battlefield publisher after six years effective March 30, the company announced today. In addition, he will no longer be a member of the publisher's board of directors.

The EA board of directors has appointed longtime EA executive Larry Probst as executive chairman of the publisher while a search is conducted for Riccitiello's permanent replacement. Probst has been in a leadership position at EA since 1991 and was CEO from 1991 to 2007. The Board will consider internal and external candidates, the company said, with the help of a "leading executive search firm."

"We thank John for his contributions to EA since he was appointed CEO in 2007, especially the passion, dedication and energy he brought to the Company every single day," Probst said in a statement. "John has worked hard to lead the Company through challenging transitions in our industry, and was instrumental in driving our very significant growth in digital revenues. We appreciate John's leadership and the many important strategic initiatives he has driven for the Company. We have mutually agreed that this is the right time for a leadership transition."

Riccitiello offered his own comments on his decision to leave EA. He praised the publisher and its employees and said he is optimistic about the company's future with next-generation consoles on the horizon.

"I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and after six years I feel it is the right time for me pass the baton and let new leadership take the Company into its next phase of innovation and growth."

"EA is an outstanding company with creative and talented employees, and it has been an honor to serve as the Company’s CEO," Riccitiello said in a statement. "I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and after six years I feel it is the right time for me pass the baton and let new leadership take the Company into its next phase of innovation and growth. I remain very optimistic about EA's future; there is a world class team driving the Company’s transition to the next generation of game consoles.

The internal memo Riccitiello sent to Probst regarding his resignation was published by the Securities and Exchange Commission. It states that the "tough" decision to leave was a matter of being accountable to shareholders.

Mr. Larry Probst
Chairman Electronic Arts

Dear Larry,

"I hereby offer my resignation as CEO of Electronic Arts effective with the end of our Fiscal Year 13 on March 30, 2013.
This is a tough decision, but it all comes down to accountability. The progress EA has made on transitioning to digital games and services is something I’m extremely proud of. However, it currently looks like we will come in at the low end of, or slightly below, the financial guidance we issued in January, and we have fallen short of the internal operating plan we set one year ago. EA’s shareholders and employees expect better and I am accountable for the miss.

I have been at the helm as EA’s CEO for six years and served as COO for nearly seven years starting in 1997. I know this company well, and I care deeply about its future success. I leave knowing EA is a great company, with an enormously talented group of leaders and the strongest slate of games in the industry.

I could not be more proud of our company’s games, from Battlefield and FIFA, to The Simpsons: Tapped Out and Real Racing 3. We have built many great franchises that will serve the company well in FY14 and beyond. In particular, I am confident that the investments we have made in games for next-generation consoles will put EA in a strong leadership position for many years ahead.

In offering my resignation, my goal is to allow the talented leaders at EA a clean start on FY14. I look forward to working with you in the coming weeks on an effective leadership transition. I’m extremely honored to have led this company and proud to have worked with all the great people at Electronic Arts."

Sincerely,
John Riccitiello

As part of Riccitiello's separation agreement with EA, he will continue to draw a salary for 24 months.

Team Fortress 2 is Oculus Rift's first game
Mar 18th 2013, 19:10

Valve confirms class-based free-to-play shooter first game to officially support virtual reality technology.

Valve's class-based free-to-play shooter Team Fortress 2 will be the first officially supported Oculus Rift title, the developer confirmed to Engadget today. "VR Mode" will be available to gamers through an update expected to be delivered "sometime within the next couple of weeks."

"This is a mode that everybody who has a Rift dev kit and access to Team Fortress 2 will be able to play, just on public and in the same servers that everybody else is playing in," Valve programmer Joe Ludwig said.

"Everybody" will not include Mac or Linux Team Fortress 2 players right away, Ludwig said. He explained that Valve does not have a Mac or Linux software development kit (SDK) from the Oculus team yet.

"But once we get those, we'll get it ported over to those other platforms," Ludwig said.

Valve will hold two virtual reality-themed talks during the Game Developers Conference next week. Ludwig will present "What We Learned Porting Team Fortress 2 to Virtual Reality," which will detail the company's efforts to get the free-to-play game running in virtual reality goggles.

Additionally, Valve's Michael Abrash will speak more generally about virtual reality in a discussion titled "Why Virtual Reality is Hard (And Where it Might be Going)." This talk will touch on why virtual reality technologies could become more mainstream in the near future.

The Oculus Rift rose to prominence last year, when its Kickstarter campaign smashed its $250,000 target on its first day, ending with $2.4 million from more than 9,500 backers. A copy of Doom 3: BFG Edition was promised to backers, but this promotion was recently scuttled, with supporters able to receive a refund.
