Pokemon X and Y features new region and rideable Pokemon
May 14th 2013, 14:55

Nintendo unveils the France-like Kalos region alongside four new Pokemon.

3DS adventures Pokemon X and Y will be set in an entirely new region called Kalos, Nintendo has announced.

Nintendo also announced that the capital of Kalos will be Lumiose City, which contains a massive tower reminiscent of Paris' Eiffel Tower.

The Pokedex in Pokemon X and Y will also be split across the Kalos region's three unique areas, and the game will include "more than 640" of the Pokemon encountered across the previous games in the series.

Nintendo also unveiled four Pokemon new for Pokemon X and Y: the life-leeching electric Pokemon Helioptile; the swift flying Fletchling; Pancham, who can lower the defence of an enemy Pokemon and then switch out for another; and Gogoat, a rideable Pokemon who can be used as a mount in the game for the first time in the series.

Pokemon X and Y will launch for 3DS in October 2013. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Payday 2 no longer a digital-exclusive
May 14th 2013, 14:46

OverKill Software's heist-themed action game coming to retail worldwide this August for Xbox 360 and PS3; PC version will be available on Steam.

Payday 2 will launch this August globally at retail for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, developer Overkill Software announced today. Previously, the game was confirmed for a digital-only release on Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, and PC.

"We have a bit of a problem here at Overkill--there are just too many great ideas and none that we were really happy to throw out--so Payday 2 has become just too big to reserve release on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network alone," game director David Goldfarb said in a statement.

The PC version of Payday 2 will remain a digital-exclusive and will be available through Steam.

Payday 2 includes a number of features not found in 2011's original Payday: The Heist, including a skill and progression system. In addition, the game features four different professions, each with its own unique abilities.

For more, check out GameSpot's Now Playing video feature below with Goldfarb.

Twitch viewing app hits Xbox 360
May 14th 2013, 13:06

New app from video site available only in the United States for Xbox Live Gold subscribers; does not allow streaming, only viewing.

Video platform Twitch today announced the arrival of a dedicated app for Xbox 360 that will allow gamers to view content, but not stream it. The Twitch app for Xbox 360 is only available in the United States to those with an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

Twitch's worldwide audience now stands at 34 million unique viewers per month, and the arrival of the Xbox 360 app is a measure of reaching gamers wherever they are, CEO Emmet Shear said in a statement.

"Our app for Xbox 360 brings Twitch video to the television and into the living room of millions of Xbox Live members for the first time," Shear said. "Given the huge number Xbox owners and how many of them love gaming spectatorship, it's a natural fit to bring the Twitch experience to the 360."

Twitch launched during the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo and has since partnered with a string of high-profile companies and brands, including Ubisoft, Electronic Arts, and Activision.

Using the Twitch app for Xbox 360, players will be able to watch the top 300 live Twitch channels and browse videos either by channel, game, or featured content.

Video Games: The Movie heads to Kickstarter for post-production
May 14th 2013, 13:03

Mediajuice Studios launches second crowd-funding campaign asking for $60,000 to finalize indie film.

Mediajuice Studios today launched a Kickstarter campaign to finalize its independent film Video Games: The Movie. The filmmakers recently wrapped up a year's worth of location and interview shoots, and are now looking to secure $60,000 complete post-production on the project.

Funds amassed from the Kickstarter campaign will be used for editing, a musical score, voice-over narration, the acquisition of licensed archival clips, motion graphics, and to secure interviews related to the next generation of consoles.

"I hope that once we're done, Video Games: The Movie will stand as a benchmark for all other movies about the games industry; and that it will help dispel some of the nagging falsehoods that ignorantly plague game makers and players, and keep them from receiving mainstream acceptance like other art forms such as films, music and books," director Jeremy Snead said in a statement.

"In the end, our hope is that this film will help further legitimize the industry and the culture to those who continue to disregard it without really spending time to learn about it," Snead added.

The film features interviews with some of the industry's most experienced and influential designers, celebrities, and executives, including Atari founder Nolan Bushnell, EA Labels president Frank Gibeau, Star Trek actor Wil Wheaton, and a long list of others.

Video Games: The Movie also shot a number of scenes on-location at industry events like Comic-Con, Pax, and E3 and studio shoots at places like Gearbox Software, 343 Industries, and Epic Games, among others.

Snead and Mediajuice Studios originally launched a crowd-funding campaign for Video Games: The Movie through IndieGoGo last year, gathering $1,790 of a $107,550 goal. Unlike Kickstarter, IndieGoGo is not all-or-nothing, thus allowing Snead and Mediajuice Studios to use those funds.

Video Games: The Movie is expected to premiere this summer in Los Angeles, before being released theatrically and on home video and video-on-demand through a distributor yet to be announced.

ZombiU 2 prototype in development at Ubisoft
May 14th 2013, 12:38

"It's too soon to tell you more," says studio creative director.

Work on a prototype for a sequel to Wii U launch title ZombiU is underway at Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio's creative director Jean-Philippe Caro has said.

Speaking on Twitter, Caro said "the team is working hard on a prototype" but that "it's too soon to tell you more."

Since the game's release, Ubisoft has said that one of ZombiU's most warmly received features--permanent death for characters--was almost scrapped by the development team.

Speaking to GameSpot earlier in the year, Ubisoft managing director Xavier Poix said the message behind the Wii U was hard to convey and that it might have led to ZombiU's ukewarm critical reception when the game launched in 2012.

"The whole idea of the asymmetrical gameplay and using two screens to do two very different things is not simple to explain to people," said Poix at the time.

"ZombiU was designed to be a game for core players launching with a new Nintendo console. We should have communicated better in this respect to let people know what kind of experience to expect. It wasn't obvious enough that there would be a new controller and new gameplay and a new skill set to develop."

Fuse not ruled out for Wii U
May 14th 2013, 11:12

Insomniac Games CEO also says he'd like to see Nintendo bring more classic franchises to the Wii U.

Insomniac Games CEO Ted Price won't rule out porting co-operative shooter Fuse to the Wii U, but says that he'd like to see Nintendo do more to support the fledgling console.

"We have to be selective because it's easy to start to stretch yourself too thin," said Price in an interview with Digitally Downloaded about Wii U development, "so we're careful about where we go."

"One of the questions I got a lot of early on was 'why aren't you developing for the Wii U?' and the answer was simply bandwidth. We had to focus on delivering a great game on multiple platforms, but there's a point where we had to make hard choices, and for us we needed to limit the number of platforms for Fuse."

Speaking about the Wii U, Price said he'd like to see Nintendo produce more of its classic franchises for the console. "As a player what I would love to see is more of those games that I grew up with. Zeldas, Marios, Metroid - those are the games I look for from Nintendo, and I hope more of them come out for the Wii U."

Fuse is the first multiplatform title for Insomniac Games, with the California developer previously focusing its efforts--such as Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and Spyro the Dragon--on Sony platforms.

Price previously hinted on Reddit that the company would consider developing for PC, but is not actively looking into the Wii U at present.

When asked if that rules out a port of Fuse on the Wii U, Price said "we're not ruling out anything in the future. We are a content creator and we want to reach as large of an audience as we can."

Fuse will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on May 28 in North America and May 31 in Europe.

Nintendo wins appeal in Wii court case
May 14th 2013, 10:39

Nintendo did not infringe on patents with the Wii, rules court.

The United States Court of Appeals has upheld a previous ruling that Nintendo did not infringe on patents held by Motiva LLC.

The US International Trade Commission said in January that Motiva's sole use of its patents was to engage in a lawsuit against Nintendo, and subsequently ruled in favour of the Mario owner.

The lawsuit had been ongoing since 2008 when Motiva sued Nintendo, with the latter company arguing that the former had no intention of using the patents to either create its own product or license the products to another company.

Motiva held U.S. Patent numbers 7,292,151 and 7,492,268, which was involved a peripheral for measuring the movement of its user.

"Motiva was never close to launching a product incorporating the patented technology--nor did any partners show any interest in doing so, for years before or any time after the launch of the Wii. Motiva’s only remaining prototype was a product far from completion, and a multitude of development and testing steps remained prior to finalising a product for production. Moreover, the evidence demonstrated that Motiva’s litigation was targeted at financial gains, not at encouraging adoption of Motiva’s patented technology," wrote Circuit Judge Sharon Prost in the ruling.

"We are very pleased with this result," said Nintendo deputy general counsel Richard Medway in a press release. "The court confirmed that Motiva's sole activity, litigation against Nintendo, did not satisfy the ITC's domestic industry requirement."

"Nintendo has a passionate tradition of developing innovative products while respecting the intellectual property rights of others. We vigorously defend patent lawsuits when we firmly believe that we have not infringed another party's patent."

WWE 2K14 slated for October 29 release
May 14th 2013, 07:27

2K Sports' wrestling game WWE 2K14 to arrive in October this year for the Xbox 360 and PS3.

2K Sports' upcoming professional wrestling game WWE 2K14 has been scheduled for an October 29 release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, parent company Take-Two Interactive has announced.

The date was unveiled in Take-Two Interactive's report for the 2013 fiscal year ending March 31. WWE 2K14 is being developed by Yuke's (Rumble Roses, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw series) and Visual Concepts (NBA series).

Take-Two Interactive acquired the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) license for video games earlier this year following THQ's bankruptcy. The multi-year licensing agreement will see WWE games continue to be developed by Yuke's.

The new partnership nullifies previous WWE and Yuke's contracts, allowing the companies to sign new deals with Take-Two Interactive. As part of the deal, THQ will pay WWE $650,000 in royalty payments for games sold while under bankruptcy protection.
