Sony sends Notch gold colored PlayStation One
May 28th 2013, 14:30

Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson says he also received original copy of Dungeon Master II; "They sure know how to bribe nerds."

Sony sent Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson a gold colored PlayStation One as a means to invite him to an event at next month's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the designer said over Twitter recently.

"Got a [VIP] invitation to an [E3] event from Sony in the form of a gold colored [PlayStation One]. Wow. :D," Persson said.

Persson said the system came without video or power cables and is not sure if the console actually works.

"Sony also once sent me an original copy of Dungeon Master II they had lying around for some reason. They sure know how to bribe nerds. ;D," he added.

Mojang and Microsoft partnered up for Minecraft on Xbox Live Arcade, which has sold over 6 million units thus far and been described by executives as a "beast."

Neither Minecraft, nor any other Mojang titles, are available on Sony's PlayStation 3 or PlayStation Vita. However, Mojang said in March that it will "consider" bringing Minecraft to Sony platforms when its exclusivity deal with Microsoft is up. Support for Nitnendo's Wii U, though, is "very unlikely," the company said.

Xbox One disappointment caused by 'lack of focus on games,' says Just Cause boss
May 28th 2013, 13:29

Avalanche Studios founder Christofer Sundberg says negativity from Xbox One reveal is likely from a lack of focus on games rather than the console itself.

The head of Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios has said he is confident that the negativity surrounding Microsoft's Xbox One unveiling last week was due to Microsoft's "lack of focus on games" rather than the console itself.

"I understand the disappointment of many fans," said Avalanche founder Christofer Sundberg in an interview with VideoGamer, "but I am confident their disappointment is in the lack of focus on games during the reveal, rather than in the console."

Microsoft came under scrutiny from gamers after its Xbox One unveiling focused more on television and entertainment rather than games, though Microsoft has repeatedly pledged to show off more gaming at E3, including the 15 Xbox One exclusives it is currently working on.

"I hope that Microsoft will turn that around during E3," added Sundberg, also teasing to VideoGamer that "E3 2013 will be the biggest E3 for Avalanche Studios since we showed Just Cause back in 2005."

Sundberg added that Avalanche Studios has been working with the Xbox One for some time, and that the studio's "impressions from first sight until the recent public reveal have been positive."

Last week Avalanche Studios' chief technical officer, Linus Blomberg, compared the hardware in the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, saying "the specs on paper would favor the PS4 over the Xbox One in terms of raw power, but there are many other factors involved so we’ll just have to wait and see a bit longer before making that judgment."

"Once [Microsoft has] cleared any remaining question marks around touchy subjects like always-on and second-hand sales, they are able to focus on the games and the real console war can finally kick off," concluded Sundberg.

German commission calls out Xbox One privacy issues
May 28th 2013, 13:01

Country's federal data protection commissioner Peter Schaar likens Microsoft's next-generation platform to a "monitoring device."

Not all are pleased with the technology behind Microsoft's upcoming platform, the Xbox One. Speaking with news site Spiegel (translated by Games Industry International), Germany's federal data protection commissioner Peter Schaar likened the next-generation console to a "monitoring device."

"The Xbox continuously records all sorts of personal information about me. Reaction rates, my learning or emotional states. [These] are then processed on an external server, and possibly even passed on to third parties," Schaar said. "Whether it be deleted ever, the person concerned cannot influence."

Privacy concerns surrounding the Xbox One were brought up immediately after Microsoft revealed that the system's built-in Kinect features an always-on standby mode that can react to users even when it is "off."

This issue was brought up to Microsoft Game Studios executive Phil Spencer, who assured gamers last week that their personal data will not be up for grabs.

"You are in control of what you want to be collected," Spencer said at the time. "Game developers will obviously enable certain features and you'll be alerted when certain things are happening. Putting the gamer in control is really important."

Football Manager 2013 is the most successful game in the series
May 28th 2013, 12:28

Sega and Sports Interactive also announce Linux support for Football Manager 2014.

Football Manager 2013 is now the best-selling game in the series, developer Sports Interactive has announced.

"I am delighted to announce that #FM13 has just become the best selling game in the Football Manager series. Thank you so much for all your support," said studio director Miles Jacobson on Twitter over the weekend.

Jacobson added that features and additions to Football Manager 2014 won't be announced until much later in the year, and that the company has yet to set even a rough or estimated release date. He did add that Football Manager 2014 would be arriving on Linux, with one purchase being playable across Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms.

Football Manager 2014 will officially support the Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) version of Linux.

Football Manager 2013 was released in November 2012, and Sega said in May that that the game had notched up 940,000 sales. "A host of significant additions make this the most exhaustive, but also the most streamlined, Football Manager to date," said GameSpot's 8.0 review of the game.

UK Chart: Resident Evil: Revelations resurfaces in first
May 28th 2013, 11:15

FIFA 13 climbs back up to second, with Donkey Kong Country Returns for the 3DS arriving in fifth.

Resident Evil: Revelations has bobbed back to the top of the UK charts following the release of the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and Wii U versions of the game.

Originally released on the 3DS in 2012, GameSpot awarded the recently-released console port a 6.5, saying that "it plays a lot like the best games in the series, but lacks the scariness and intensity that made those games special."

FIFA 13 climbs back up to second, while Metro: Last Lightslips to third from its top position last week. Dead Island: Riptide lands in fourth.

Donkey Kong Country Returns for the 3DS launches in fifth, followed by Assassin's Creed III in sixth.

Tomb Raider is seventh, Far Cry 3 eighth, Luigi's Mansion 2 ninth, and LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins is in tenth.

Activision's movie tie-in Fast & Furious: Showdown is this week's other new chart entry at 14.

Square Enix executive criticizes long game development periods
May 28th 2013, 07:35

Senior executive managing director Yosuke Matsuda voices concerns about long game development periods and regional demands; praises Steam Greenlight and Early Access.

Square Enix senior executive managing director Yosuke Matsuda has voice concerns about the company's approach to game development, specifically long development times.

Matsuda recently presented at the Square Enix financial results briefing session, which included discussion on the company's business strategy.

Acknowledging that the financial results from the March 2013 fiscal year were "disappointing", Matsuda went on to suggest ways to reform the company's approach with new initiatives, stating that the problem was "not simply a financial issue".

"Making customers wait for years with little to no information is being dishonest to them. We need to shift to a business model where we frequently interact with our customers for our products that are in‐development and/or prior to being sold, have our customers understand games under development, and finally make sure we develop games that meet their expectations." He said.

Matsuda cited crowdfunding website Kickstarter and Valve's Steam Greenlight and Early Access as current examples where developers interact with customers during the game development process.

On the topic of worldwide sales, the Square Enix executive called for more consideration of the varied demands of each region, saying it was "difficult to move forward on the assumption that many products can cover the tastes of the entire world, and sell across the entire world."

Earlier this year, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada resigned from the company following the announcement of an expected 10 billion yen loss for the 2012-2013 financial year. Despite being well-received critically, sales for big-budget Square Enix titles Tomb Raider, Hitman: Absolution, and Sleeping Dogs failed to meet expectations in the North American market.

DayZ release info, pricing model revealed
May 28th 2013, 07:18

Early access alpha available after June; price to increase when game is released.

The standalone version of apocalyptic survival mod DayZ is getting closer to public release, creator Dean "Rocket" Hall confirmed in an interview with Gamasutra.

"So what we're doing at the moment is, we gave free keys as a gift to the forum moderators, the Reddit moderators, people who helped out with DayZ development, and stuff like that," Hall said. "I guess there's about 30-100 people involved with that."

Systems such as Steam’s Early Access service allow players to buy in early while games are still in the developmental phase, rewarding those who invest early with discounted prices. It’s a model that the upcoming DayZ standalone will mirror.

’From here, once we've finished our server/client architecture--because we're moving it [to] an MMO model--we're reviewing the situation of that in June, and then we do an alpha, just like Minecraft. People pay X amount of dollars and they get early, cheap access to it, and then once it's beta, price goes up, maybe, say, $10, and once it goes retail, the price goes up $10.’ Hall said.

DayZ was originally slated to launch before the end of 2012. Hall recently took a two month leave of absence to climb Mount Everest. Last month, the creator said that a console port of DayZ was "almost certain".

Rayman Legends coming to PlayStation Vita - Report
May 28th 2013, 06:26

Vita version incoming; includes bonus costumes and levels.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Ubisoft confirmed that Rayman Legends will launch alongside the console version in North America on September 3. It will include all of the content found on consoles, as well as five "exclusive" maps playable with the Murphy character.

The original story is below

Upcoming platformer Rayman Legends will make its way to the PlayStation Vita, according to a report by Eurogamer Spain.

Originally announced as a Wii U exclusive, the game was recently revealed to also be heading to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The Vita version will allegedly include all the content of its home console counterparts, plus five exclusive rear touchpad levels and two extra character costumes: a Prince of Persia outfit, and Sam Fisher’s classic look.

The game’s seven month delay has allowed developer Ubisoft Montpellier to add an additional 30 levels and platform-specific pre-order incentives, including Assassin's Creed III: Liberation's Aveline De Grandpré, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag protagonist Edward Kenway, and Splinter Cell's Sam Fisher costumes.

The game is due for release on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U this September.
