Dragon Nest SEA gets new Rise of the Typhoon Kim content update
May 14th 2013, 02:14

New patch to feature two nest bosses, passive skills system, and five new Lotus Marsh instances.

Shanda Games announced that it has released the new Dragon Nest SEA update called Rise of the Typhoon Kim.

The patch bumps up the level cap from 50 to 60 and also introduces new Nest bosses: the fire-based giant orc Typhoon Kim and the mutant summoner Professor K. New passive skills and EX skills can now be learned by players over level 50.

Players can now check out five new maps and new quests located in the Lotus Marsh. The game's story now revolves around a mysterious meteor crash site that is spreading corruption in the marsh.

This is the first time the patch is available in the English language. There is no word on the update's release in the North American and European version of Dragon Nest.

Take-Two says next-gen development will be complicated and costly
May 13th 2013, 21:46

CEO Strauss Zelnick says making the "standard bearers of the industry" will not come easily.

Grand Theft Auto parent publisher Take-Two Interactive believes creating compelling titles for next-generation platforms will be complicated and costly.

Despite the challenges, CEO Strauss Zelnick believes his company is up to the task, due in part to a drive to be fiscally responsible and disciplined, as well as the cash it has on hand.

"There's nothing straightforward about making what we hope will be the standard bearers of the industry. And there's no question that developing for what will be next-gen will be complicated and for the type of titles we do, will be costly," Zelnick said today in a post-earnings financial call.

"That said, we have a very strong balance sheet and we align our business with our costs; and one of our three strategic objectives is to be the most efficient company in the business," he added.

Zelnick's comments today don't match up with what the executive said in November. At the time, he did not foresee a significant increase in development costs for next-generation games. In fact, he said the opposite would be the more likely scenario--that games would become easier to make.

"We don't have a ramp up of operating expenses for next-generation," Zelnick said at the time. "Do we believe the titles to be a whole lot more expensive to make for next-gen? And the answer is we do not. In many instances we believe that it may be somewhat easier to make titles for next-gen, depending on how the technology comes together."

Today, Zelnick said that in time, development efficiencies may be reached, but right now it's "too early to say" if that will be the case.

Take-Two's next major project is Grand Theft Auto V, which launches September 17 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation. Wii U and PC versions are "up for consideration." For more, check out an Ask GameSpot video feature on the game below.

BioShock Infinite ships 3.7 million
May 13th 2013, 20:22

Latest entry in FPS series posts best first-month sales in franchise history; Take-Two full-year revenue hits $1.222 billion; Max Payne 3 shipments reach 4 million.

BioShock Infinite has sold-in (i.e. shipped) 3.7 million copies worldwide life-to-date, publisher Take-Two Interactive announced today as part of its fourth quarter and full-year earnings report.

From Irrational Games, BioShock Infinite launched March 26 and has seen higher first-month sales than any other entry in the series to date. Take-Two also reported "solid demand" for the BioShock Infinite Season Pass, which offers three upcoming add-ons.

None have been released thus far, though a past rumor suggests the first will add a new companion character.

The news comes as part of Take-Two Interactive's fourth quarter and full-year earnings report for the periods ended March 31. For the fourth quarter, revenue was $303.1 million, compared to $148.1 million last year. The company pulled a profit of $42.9 million for the quarter, up from a loss of $50.9 million last year.

Catalog sales made up 25 percent of net revenue in the quarter, while revenue from digitally delivered content surged 192 percent year-over-year and made up 27 percent of net revenue.

For the fiscal year, Take-Two net revenue hit $1.222 billion, up from $825.8 million last year. The company posted a profit of $33.1 million for the period, compared to a loss of $59.4 million last year.

The largest contributors to Take-Two's bottom line in fiscal 2013 were Borderlands 2, NBA 2K13, BioShock Infinite, Max Payne 3, Grand Theft Auto IV, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, and Red Dead Redemption.

Revenue from digital content jumped 148 percent year-over-year and made up 22 percent of net revenue. Take-Two attributed this boost in digital revenue to offerings from Borderlands 2, the Grand Theft Auto franchise, NBA 2K13, Civilization V, and XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Take-Two also gave sales updates for two of its major 2012 titles. The company revealed that Max Payne 3 has now shipped 4 million units since launch in May 2012 and reiterated that Borderlands 2 has shipped 6 million copies and is likely to become 2K's most successful title to date.

"Our commitment to delight consumers with the highest-quality interactive entertainment experiences enabled Take-Two to have an outstanding year, despite a challenging environment for many in our industry," Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said in a statement.

"2013 is the 20th anniversary of Take-Two's founding and, today, our Company is better positioned for success than at any other time in its history. With Rockstar Games launching Grand Theft Auto V in September, fiscal 2014 is poised to be one of our best years ever," he added. "Looking ahead, we have an extensive pipeline of next-generation and emerging platform titles in development, including both new intellectual property and releases from our proven franchises."

This is a breaking news story. Additional details will be added

Biden: No legal problem with taxing violent games
May 13th 2013, 19:50

United States Vice President Joe Biden believes there is no legal restriction on ability to tax violent media.

United States Vice President Joe Biden believes it would be no problem to tax violent games. As part of a recent gun legislation strategy meeting with religious leaders, Biden said that an idea brought forth by Reverend Franklin Graham to tax violent media could be a smart move.

Participants in the behind-closed-doors session told Politico (via Game Politics) that Biden said there is "no restriction on the ability to do that; there's no legal reason why they couldn't" tax violent media.

He also said that that he would like to see a comprehensive study done regarding the impact of violent games and movies on young people.

Reverend Graham said that funds derived from the tax should go towards helping victims of gun violence, along with their families. Excise tax on violent media is nothing new, with multiple calls for such legislative action popping up since the Sandy Hook massacre and before the school shooting.

In a landmark 2011 decision, the Supreme Court sided with the video game industry, ruling that games are protected free speech under the first amendment.

New PlayStation 4 ad is fake
May 13th 2013, 18:15

[UPDATE] Sony confirms new advertisement showing off next-generation platform is not the real deal.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Sony confirmed with Kotaku that the PlayStation 4 advertisement is fake.

The original story follows below

A video published last night on YouTube claims to offer the first look at the PlayStation 4 itself.

The video, titled "Reveal PlayStation 4 PS4 E3 2013," features a series of men and women staring into the camera while the familiar button symbols are shown reflected in their eyes.

A voice asks "You want to play?" while clips of games and the PS4 system itself cycle through.

It is unclear if the video is in fact an official Sony production or a fan mock-up. Sony was not immediately available to comment at press time.

The PS4 itself was not shown during the platform's announcement in February, something competitor Microsoft was quick to point out. At the time, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida apologized for keeping the system under wraps, noting its design had not yet been finalized.

"I'm sorry we did not show the hardware," Yoshida then said. "But we have plans from now--in February--through the year for the launch. We like to disclose things based on what we think we really want to communicate first. And next time we will talk about these things."

Sony's E3 2013 presentation is slated for Monday, June 10.

Warren Spector, Paul Sams leading new game program at University of Texas
May 13th 2013, 17:29

Deus Ex designer and Blizzard executive spearheading intensive 12-month course that will only accept 20 students.

Deus Ex designer Warren Spector and Blizzard president Paul Sams will head up a new postgraduate game development course at the University of Texas in Austin, the school announced today (via Polygon).

The new Denius-Sams Gaming Academy post-baccalaureate certification program will begin during the fall 2014 semester and is designed for "top candidates looking for leadership training the field of video game production."

The University of Texas college of communication, college of fine arts, and department of computer science are working together to launch the program. According to Spector, the course will be "a little different" than the typical game-focused program.

He described the course, which will only accept 20 students, as a "much shorter, 12-month very intense program. It's kind of like the Navy S.E.A.L.s. It's going to be very competitive."

What will differentiate the program from other, similar courses is that it will "focus explicitly on that bigger, creative leadership. Both the management; the production side. And the game direction/creative leadership side. That's a space that isn't being served by a lot of the other development programs."

For more on the course, check out the video below.

Spector found himself out of a job when Disney closed Epic Mickey outfit Junction Point Studios in January.

He made headlines recently by lashing out at the new Wolfenstein game from Bethesda, though he later apologized for saying the world did not need a new "generically dark, monochromatic, FPS, kill-the-Nazi-giant-robot game."

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies getting Western release this fall
May 13th 2013, 16:56

Digital only release of Ace Attorney 5 coming to North America and Europe later in 2013.

Capcom has confirmed that Ace Attorney 5 will be coming to North America and Europe this fall with the title Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies.

The game will only be sold digitally on the 3DS eShop, according to a Capcom press release, though a price was not mentioned.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies is set eight years after the last game in the series, with protagonist Phoenix Wright returning to a destroyed courtroom. The game will feature a new companion, Athena Cykes, and a mechanic that allows players to pinpoint unusual feelings during a courtroom examination. The game will also be rendered in 3D for the first time.

It is the seventh game in the series, including the two spin-off games about series co-star Miles Edgeworth, and the first to be released on 3DS.

Ahead of its Western release, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies will launch in Japan this July.

Alongside the announcement, Capcom also released a trailer showing off the game's new engine and hinting at its storyline:
