BioShock Infinite's religious themes led dev to consider quitting
Feb 28th 2013, 15:03

Irrational Games developer so offended by scene in upcoming action game he wrote resignation letter (but did not quit); situation was a breakthrough for Ken Levine.

One Irrational Games developer was so offended by the religious themes of a certain scene in BioShock Infinite that he sought to quit the company immediately after completing his playthrough of the level.

"There was a scene in the game at the end where there's a gentleman here--one of our artists--who got to a point in the game, played it, turned off BioShock, opened up his computer, opened Microsoft Word, and wrote a resignation letter; it had offended him so much," Levine told GameSpot in a new video interview.

After it was brought to his attention, Levine spoke with this developer. His discussion with this "extremely religious guy" helped Levine better understand how to write the game's Comstock character, something he had struggled with for a long time.

"And I ended up having a conversation with him; my first impulse was I don't want this guy to go because he was a good guy and a talented guy," Levine said. "And we actually ended up having a long talk; he was an extremely religious guy and when we started talking, I realized that something I could connect to was a notion of forgiveness and what an important part that is of the New Testament and why Christ was such a revolutionary figure."

"I realized that something I could connect to was a notion of forgiveness and what an important part that is of the New Testament and why Christ was such a revolutionary figure."

"And thinking about how I would incorporate the power of that notion to Comstock into his world was, to me, the key. Because who hasn't done things that they don't want to be forgiven for?"

This developer did not end up quitting Irrational Games.

This was a breakthrough for Levine. He explained that writing Comstock, the religious, ultra-nationalist antagonist of BioShock Infinite, had been a long and difficult struggle due to his lack of personal religious knowledge.

"[Comstock] was one of the toughest characters for me to write because I don't have a religious background, let alone the darker side of his beliefs; the racist side of his beliefs. So I really had a lot of trouble writing him for a long time," Levine explained.

"And it occurred to me I had to figure out why do people follow him? That was the key to his character. Why do people follow him? What does he provide to them? And I struggled with that for a long time because obviously an ecstatic religious experience is something that a religious leader provides but I don't have a connection to as a writer," he added. "And it's always hard when you're trying to write something that you have never felt. And that would feel dishonest to me."

BioShock Infinite is due out on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC on March 26. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Army of Two: Devil's Cartel will reel back 'frat-boy' tones
Feb 28th 2013, 14:09

Visceral Games says upcoming co-op shooter has toned down some tendencies from past games, but will still be over-the-top.

Army of Two: The Devil's Cartel will "reel in" some of the "frat-boy-esque" tendencies of the first two games, but still retain an arcade feel, Visceral Games told Eurogamer.

"The previous Army of Two games had a real frat-boy-esque tone to them," designer Greg Rizzer said. "We've kind of reeled that in a little bit, but we certainly wanted to still be over-the-top."

Rizzer added that gamers should not take The Devil's Cartel too seriously. At the end of the day, games are meant to be fun, he said.

"Especially in the market today where every shooter is claiming to be the most realistic, one of the things that's starting to slip away is games are meant to be fun," Rizzer said. "Even if it's a game that's violent in content, we still as gamers need to be able to appreciate a Michael Bay-esque type of experience. And using all this new technology we have, why not?

The Devil's Cartel is due out March 26 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

Double Fine 'optimistic' about buying Stacking, Costume Quest rights off THQ
Feb 28th 2013, 13:55

Double Fine looking to buy console distribution rights to downloadable titles; studio currently owns the IP and distribution rights on PC.

Double Fine has said it is "optimistic" about regaining the distribution rights for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of downloadable adventures Stacking and Costume Quest from bankrupt games publisher THQ.

The studio, which is helmed by games veteran Tim Schafer and responsible for Psychonauts, Brutal Legend and, eventually, Kickstarter success story Double Fine Adventure, already owns the IP rights to both Stacking and Costume Quest and the PC distribution rights, but lacks the distribution rights for the consoles, meaning it loses out of money for each copy of the game sold.

"Double Fine owns the IP rights to Costume Quest and Stacking," vice president of Double Fine business development Justin Bailey said to Polygon.

"THQ retained limited distribution rights that we bid on during the previous process to reclaim them prior to their expiration. We are optimistic about regaining these distribution rights, as this process has already demonstrated that when there are parties interested in specific assets, those assets are worth more when sold separately."

THQ is holding a new auction for its remaining assets on April 1, and it seems likely Double Fine will attend. Stacking and Costume Quest are part of a 36-title lot, alongside Supreme Commander, Worms 2, and Nexuiz. The beleaguered company managed to offload many of its IP, including Saints Row, Homefront, and WWE, earlier this month.

Study: 4.6 percent of developers making Wii U games
Feb 28th 2013, 13:36

Game Developers Conference "State of the Industry" research shows North American indie game scene rising, Nintendo development hurting.

Game Developers Conference organizers today released the results of its first annual "State of the Industry" study, revealing a burgeoning independent scene and a hurting Nintendo.

The group polled more than 2,500 North American game developers who attended GDC 2012 or plan to attend GDC 2013. It found that just 4.6 percent of developers are currently making a Wii U game, while 6.4 percent of respondents said their next game would be for Nintendo's latest.

Microsoft topped the interest list of the Big Three, with 13.2 percent of surveyed developers currently making games for the Xbox 360 and nearly 14 percent planning their next title for the platform. Sony came up just behind, with 13 percent releasing their current game for the system and 12.4 percent planning to ship their next title on the platform.

An identical 11 percent of developers surveyed said they are making their next game for the PlayStation 4 and the still unannounced but highly rumored Xbox 720.

The independent development is on the up and up, according to the GDC study. It found that 53 percent of respondents identified themselves as "indie developers." And of those, 51 percent have been independent for under two years, the study said.

Other notable indie statistics include 46 percent of respondents saying they work within companies of ten people or fewer. Further highlighting the growing indie scene, the majority of developers said they were not--and don't plan to--work with a publisher. The study found that just 24 percent worked with a publisher on their last game, while 20 percent are doing so at present.

The GDC poll also highlighted the trend of developers creating games outside of the console space. Thirty-eight percent of surveyed developers released their last game for smartphones and tablets, while a larger 55 percent are currently developing for those platforms; 58 percent said they plan to ship their next game for smartphones and tablets.

PC and Mac are the next most sought after platforms, according to the study. 34.6 percent of respondents said they released their last title for these platforms, while 49 percent are planning to release their next title on PC and Mac.

Developers showed little interest in the dedicated gaming market, according to the study. It found that 2 percent of developers made their last title for PlayStation Vita, 4.2 percent are making their current game for the system, and 5 percent said they plan to release their next game on the platform. As for Nintendo's 3DS, it did not fare any better. Two percent are currently making a 3DS game and 2.8 percent of polled developers plan to release their next game on the platform.

Concerning funding, the GDC poll of North American developers found that 37 percent are financing their current projects through existing company cash flow and 35 percent through personal funds. Nine percent of respondents said their projects were primarily funded by venture capital, while 10 percent are publisher-funded, and 4 percent are primarily crowd-funded.

Of the surveyed developers, 8 percent said they had worked on a crowd-funded project in the past and a substantial 44 percent said they plan to do so in the future.

The 2013 Game Developers Conference takes place in San Francisco, California March 25-29. GameSpot will be in attendance.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag confirmed, getting exclusive PS3 content
Feb 28th 2013, 11:46

Ubisoft confirms Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag; PlayStation 3 version will get 60 minutes of exclusive content.

Ubisoft has officially confirmed Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, and added that the PlayStation 3 version will contain exclusive content.

The Sony version will include 60 minutes of 'exclusive' gameplay, though details about the content have yet to be revealed. Ubisoft had a similar partnership with Sony for last year's Assassin's Creed III, where PlayStation 3 owners were given four missions revolving around Benedict Arnold and the plot to overthrow West Point.

Ubisoft also released the game's box art for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U and PC platforms, showing the game's new protagonist, rumored to be privateer Edward Kenway, grandfather of Assassin's Creed III star Connor.

Earlier this month Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag will take place in a new setting and star a new protagonist.

GameSpot will reveal more information about the game on Monday at 17:00 GMT/09:00 PST.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance slashes to top spot in Japan weekly sales
Feb 28th 2013, 07:58

Konami’s Metal Gear spin-off beats Dragon Quest VII 3DS port and Animal Crossing: New Leaf for the week of February 18.

While the Metal Gear series isn’t known for being a stylistic action title, it seemed gamers in Japan didn’t mind the genre deviation one bit as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance took the top spot in local sales charts last week.

According to the recent Media Create sales data for the week of February 18 (via Famitsu), Konami and Platinum Games’ action title sold 308,681 units on its debut week. The PS3 version was the only one available in Japan. Konami stated that the Xbox 360 was cancelled due to various reasons.

Within the top five sales list, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance beat out the Dragon Quest VII port for the 3DS and Animal Crossing: New Leaf, as well as newcomers Magi: The Labyrinth of Beginning for the 3DS and Toaru Majutsu no Kagaku no Ensemble for the PSP. The game was praised last week for its combat and story. For more information, check out GameSpot’s review.
