FlatOut dev teases new racing game
Feb 25th 2013, 15:49

Bugbear Entertainment releases teaser video for upcoming demolition derby racing game for PC and new platforms.

FlatOut and Ridge Racer Unbounded developer Bugbear Entertainment today released a teaser video for a new demolition derby racing game. According to the developer, the entire video (below) is composed of in-game footage.

"We are returning to our roots to make this game, re-interpreting what initially excited us way back in FlatOut days. It’s full-contact motor sports with cars built for crashing," the company said in a statement.

According to Bugbear, fans have long clamored for a "proper" demolition derby game and thanks to technological advances, such a game is now possible. "We're taking destruction racing to a level you've never seen before," the company said.

"We want to make you feel the carnage."

The game is currently in development under the working title "next car game" for PC and yet-to-be-announced platforms. For more on Bugbear's latest body of work, check out GameSpot's review of Ridge Racer Unbounded.

BioWare: next-gen leap 'won't be as obvious'
Feb 25th 2013, 15:23

Art director says new platforms will offer souped-up graphics, but won't stand out as clearly as past transition.

Gamers expecting the upcoming console transition to usher in a new leap in graphical fidelity may want to pare back their excitement. BioWare art director Neil Thompson told OXM that new platforms will feature beefed up graphics, but not on the same level as the past transition.

"For the next generation there will be a big leap, but it won't be as obvious," Thompson said. "People will do things in a cleverer fashion--and I have to be careful here as there are non-disclosure agreements involved."

According to Thompson, it all comes down to economics. He said the last technology iteration "caught folks by surprise, especially the number of people you needed and the skillset jump that was required to do the work that people expected."

"In the last generation the perception was that it was going to be a ten times improvement over the previous generation."

This led to ballooned budgets, he said, noting that if this were to happen again, games could become economically unviable.

"I think they'll be better prepared, shall we say--but we can't see a ten-fold team increase again as the budgets would just be ridiculous," Thompson said. "You'd have to sell 20-30 million copies before you broke even."

Sony last week announced the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft is rumored to reveal its next-generation Xbox at a one-off event in either March or April.

Michel Ancel leaving Ubisoft?
Feb 25th 2013, 14:37

Sources say Rayman creator thinking about leaving publisher with a small team when Legends is finished.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, an Ubisoft representative issued a statement on Ancel's rumored departure.

"Michel is currently hard at work with the rest of the Rayman Legends team and is committed to delivering an amazing and unique game for the Wii U, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in early September," the statement reads.

The original story follows below

Rayman and Beyond Good & Evil designer Michel Ancel may be on the way out at Ubisoft. GameSpot sister site Gamekult has heard from sources close to the company that the longtime developer is thinking about leaving Ubisoft with a small team of developers.

According to one source, Ubisoft management is aware of Ancel's intentions and may even elect to be involved with the developer's next project. A second source claims Ancel has already give notice that he is leaving and five or six developers from Ubisoft Montpellier are prepared to leave with him.

If Ancel does leave, he will remain "tied to Rayman" in some fashion, this source said. An Ubisoft representative was not immediately available to comment.

Earlier this month, Ancel and other developers were photographed publicly protesting the Rayman Legends delay and loss of Wii U exclusivity. Development on Rayman Legends for the Wii U was reportedly finished, but the game was pushed to September so it could ship simultaneously for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U

Ancel is also working on Beyond Good & Evil 2, though Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said last year that this game is making "slow progress."

All versions of Destiny contain 'full vision'
Feb 25th 2013, 14:05

Bungie downplays differences between current- and next-gen versions of new universe.

Gamers worried the current-generation version of Bungie's "shared-world shooter" Destiny will be inferior to its next-generation counterpart can breathe a sigh of relief. Bungie recently told fans that it will deliver the "full vision" of Destiny on all platforms.

"We’ve been planning for multiple hardware platforms from the very beginning, and while we can’t get into the minute technical details of each console, we’re fully committed to delivering our full vision for Destiny on every console we ship on," Bungie said. "Currently, that list is PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360."

Destiny is also rumored to launch for the Xbox 720, as well as PC, Wii U, and PlayStation Vita.

Bungie announced Destiny for PS3 and PS4 last week during a Sony media briefing last week. The Sony version of the game will contain platform-exclusive content, Bungie said, but this was not detailed at any greater length.

Destiny is Bungie's first project as part of a 10-year publishing deal with Call of Duty company Activision. It is a first-person shooter with elements of open-world sandbox and persistent world. According to Activision, it will not release in 2013.

Guild Wars 2 getting global in-game leaderboards
Feb 25th 2013, 13:57

Leaderboards for Guild Wars 2 to be rolled out after February patch; will start with PvP but will eventually include all players and span multiple game modes.

MMO Guild Wars 2 will be getting global in-game leaderboards in an upcoming update, developer ArenaNet has said.

The move comes alongside the launch of February's Flame & Frost content patch this week, which adds more competitive Player versus Player (PvP) options to the game. Leaderboards will not arrive with the February content patch, however, but will be rolled out in stages as part of their own update.

"From the PvP side of the game, one of the things we're really trying to do right now is provide all the core support to build the base that you need for a really compelling PvP experience," said Guild Wars 2 director Colin Johanson in an interview with GameSpot. "This month we've got our two team-rated games going in, so teams can play against each other in competitive play and they earn a rating for it."

Johanson says in-game leaderboards is a "big thing that our PvP community has been asking for, and this will basically allow people to see who are the best PvP players in the world and have that updated on a constant basis."

Getting PvP into the new leaderboards is the first goal for ArenaNet, says Johanson, though not all players will be able to get recorded on the leaderboards to begin with. "We're going to be rolling out in stages, so we'll roll them out with a small number of people first--maybe the top 100 players will be on the leaderboard when we first roll it out--and we're going to make sure that it's really stable and functional, and then we're going to keep adding to that and expanding on them going forward," adds Johanson.

Guild Wars 2 has no subscription rates, but offers services such as paid PvP tournaments as a way for the company to generate its revenue.

In the future, ArenaNet plans to have its in-game leaderboards cover multiple game modes, such as World versus World. "The current World versus World rankings happen on our forums, and we'd like to move that into the leaderboards," says Johanson, adding that "we'll be looking at PvE stuff for the leaderboards as well."

ArenaNet isn't prepared to date the inclusion of the leaderboards into the game, but says players should be able to expect it "soon."

Guild Wars 2 has sold 3 million copies and was the winner of GameSpot's PC Game of the Year 2012 award.

PS4 could allow multiple subscription levels
Feb 25th 2013, 13:27

President of Worldwide Studios says Sony could act like a cable TV company and offer gold, silver, or platinum levels of membership.

The PlayStation 4 could offer gamers multiple subscription levels, Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida told The Guardian. The executive said that because services and content have become available digitally, Sony is in a position to act like a traditional cable TV company and offer multiple membership tiers.

"As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we'll have more of an option to create attractive packages. So hypothetically we can look at different models--like a cable TV company," Yoshida said.

"We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that. We can do subscription services when we have more content--especially now that we have the Gaikai technology available," he added. "With one subscription you have access to thousands of games--that's our dream."

Yoshida's comments are purely hypothetical at the moment, as Sony has not yet detailed full plans for PS4 pricing. The only mention of firm pricing plans thus far came from SCEA CEO Jack Tretton, who said last week that PS4 titles will range from 99 cents to $60.

Digital software support will be a major component of the PS4, Yoshida said, noting Sony is taking a similar approach to that of the PlayStation Vita.

"We're shifting our platform more and more to the digital side--PS4 will be similar to PS Vita in that every game will be available as a digital download, and some will also be available as a disc," he said. "The Witness will be a digital release and because of the flexibility of the digital distribution scheme, we can have more small games that might be free or available for a couple of dollars, or different services like free-to-play or subscription models."

Sony patent fights PlayStation piracy with load times
Feb 25th 2013, 12:07

New patent uses load times to determine whether software is being pirated.

Sony has filed a new patent which uses load times as a way of determining whether software is pirated.

The patent--which was filed in 2011, published last week and dug up by DarkZero--establishes the typical loading times for legitimate software and then runs all loading times through these benchmarks. If the software does not load within the acceptable time frame then the anti-piracy tech kicks in and stops the gane from being played.

The full patent, titled Benchmark Measurement For Legitimate Duplication Validation, shows a secondary validation process that kicks in if the software fails to load within the Sony's acceptable time range.

But failing to pass the secondary validation process brings the potential of being blocked, presumably from Sony's online PlayStation Network services.

Sony's latest patent has surfaced less than a week after the company formally announced the next-gen PlayStation 4, suggesting the possibility that Sony might incorporate this patent into its suite of anti-piracy measures for its next console.

Capcom axes annual Captivate event for 2013
Feb 25th 2013, 11:03

Capcom looking to focus its announcements around other events in 2013.

Capcom isn't planning to hold its annual Captivate event this year, the publisher has confirmed. It has been running the event, which is designed to showcase its annual line-up, since 2008.

"This year we're likely to be looking at announcements around other events or not at events at all. So there isn't a Captivate planned this year," said Capcom staffer Sven on the Capcom Unity forums.

Capcom will, however, be attending E3, Comic-Con, and PAX.

Capcom is currently working on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and Wii U versions of well-liked 3DS adventure Resident Evil: Revelations, and Capcom veteran Yoshinoro Ono unveiled the studio's newest game, Deep Down, as part of Sony's PlayStation 4 announcement last week.

The publisher is also working on Ace Attorney 5 and Monster Hunter 4, and will be releasing Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate on the 3DS and Wii U in North America and Europe in March.

Last year Captivate was held in Rome; in 2011 it took place in Miami.

Divergence Online seeking crowdfunding
Feb 25th 2013, 07:24

2006 sandbox MMO now back on the radar; creator releases video detailing project history and goals.

Divergence Online, a sandbox sci-fi MMO that has been on hiatus since its original announcement in 2006, is now back in development, and is seeking crowdsourced funds to keep its momentum.

According to an IndieGogo crowdfunding page, the goal the project needs to hit is $50,000. Players who contribute $10 are guaranteed beta access, while players who pay more can get other tiered rewards ranging from an exclusive character class to a personal in-game island.

The project has raised $860 at this point in time, with 57 days left before it closes. For more information, check out the game’s IndieGogo page.

Back in 2006, developer Stainglass Llama announced that it was creating a sci-fi sandbox MMO called Divergence that allowed players to toggle between an action-style interface or a traditional auto-attack system. The game also featured a non-linear world, open PvP, lootable corpses, and unique races and breeds.
