Just Cause dev teases new game
Feb 15th 2013, 14:42

Avalanche Studios cofounder Christofer Sundberg releases blurry image showing off one of the company's three unannounced games.

Just Cause developer Avalanche Studios cofounder Christofer Sundberg has released (via Kotaku) a blurry teaser image believed to be for one of the studio's three unannounced projects. The image (below right) shows off a character riding a motorcycle through a desert scene while kicking an assailant into the dust.

The image may contain a reference to the Just Cause series, as the character's left hand looks to feature the series-famous grappling hook. If this game is indeed the rumored Just Cause 3, it would mark a departure from the first two game's tropical settings, though this image may not be representative of the entire game.

Avalanche has previously confirmed one of its unannounced games--Project Mamba--is in development for next-generation consoles and PC for a launch in 2014.

The studio is headquartered in Sweden and opened a New York City office in November 2011.

Avalanche is best known for its well-regarded open-world action franchise Just Cause, the most recent installment from which launched in March 2010. In September 2011, the company released Renegade Ops, a vehicular dual-stick shooter that received a favorable critical reception.

Star Wars fighting game footage emerges
Feb 15th 2013, 14:06

Tech demo for original Xbox brawler from now-defunct Studio Gigante set in sci-fi universe surfaces.

Footage of a canceled Star Wars fighting game has surfaced. Robomodo president Josh Tsui has released a video (via Polygon) for an untitled brawler set in George Lucas' sci-fi universe. The game was in development for the original Xbox at the now-defunct Studio Gigante, which Tsui cofounded.

According to Tsui, the footage (below) is in-game and meant to show a proof of concept. It has not been edited, he said, noting it was meant to accompany a presentation.

The video shows off a battle between Anakin Skywalker and Darth Maul, the main antagonist of Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace. Gameplay appears to take place in a 3D space instead of on a 2D plane and also features slow-motion sequences and Force moves.

This game would not have been the first Star Wars fighting game. LucasArts developed the weapon-based 3D fighting game Star Wars: Masters of Teräs Käsi in the late 1990s for the original PlayStation. In addition, Darth Vader, Yoda, and other Star Wars characters appeared in 2008's SoulCalibur IV.

Sex in video games talk at GDC
Feb 15th 2013, 13:27

Dragon Age writer David Gaider leading discussion next month at Game Developers Conference concerning "risks and difficulties" with addressing sexuality in games.

BioWare senior writer David Gaider will lead a discussion called Sex in Video Games next month at the 2013 Game Developers Conference, organizers have announced.

Gaider, who has worked at BioWare since 1999 and is currently lead writer on Dragon Age III: Inquisition, will discuss the issues of sexism and sexuality in contemporary games.

"Games have reached the point where realistic portrayals of sex and adult relationships are possible, but what does this mean to us as developers?," reads a line from the discussion description. "How much responsibility do we have in addressing issues of sexism and sexuality, and are we inadvertently making statements about what is acceptable, even when we don't mean to say anything at all?"

Gaider will speak about the "risks and challenges" associated with addressing (or not addressing) sexism and sexuality in games. Attendees will also hear Gaider speak about the benefits of inclusiveness during the discussion.

Other notable 2013 GDC presentations include one from Bungie Studios, which will open up on the creative process for its all-new universe with Activision called Destiny; and another from Hideo Kojima, who will give a public demo of his new FOX Engine and discuss Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

The 2013 GDC comes to San Francisco, California March 25-29. Microsoft is rumored to announce the Xbox 720 around the same time.

Wii U January US sales hit 57,000 - Report
Feb 15th 2013, 13:00

[UPDATE] Estimates place system sales for the month down 38 percent from original Wii during same point.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, GameSpot sister site CNET heard from a source with knowledge of NPD data that the Wii U sold 57,000 units in the United States during January.

The original story follows below

A person with access to NPD data has told Gamasutra that Wii U sales for January 2013 in the United States were "well under" 100,000 units. And according to the site's own estimates, sales for the month were between 45,000 and 59,000 units.

The NPD Group does not provide specific sales figures for hardware, but a representative from the research group told the site that Wii U sales for its first three months are down 38 percent from the original Wii during the same point in time.

By comparison, the seven-year-old Xbox 360 sold 281,000 units during January in the US.

The research group also does not share exact software sales data. However, the NPD's top 10 software chart (below) shows that in the case where a title was released for Wii and Wii U (Just Dance 4, NBA 2K13, Madden NFL 13, Skylanders Giants, and FIFA Soccer 13) the Wii version sold better in every instance.

January 2013 Top 10 US Titles

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360, PS3, Wii U, PC) - Activision Blizzard
2. Far Cry 3 (X360, PS3, PC) - Ubisoft
3. Just Dance 4 (Wii, X360, PS3, Wii U) - Ubisoft
4. NBA 2K13 (X360, PS3, Wii, Wii U, PSP, PC) - Take-Two Interactive
5. Madden NFL 13 (X360, PS3, Wii, PS Vita, Wii U) - Electronic Arts
6. DmC: Devil May Cry (PS3, X360) - Capcom
7. Halo 4 (X360) - Microsoft
8. Assassin's Creed III (X360, PS3, Wii U, PC) - Ubisoft
9. Skylanders Giants (Wii, X360, PS3, 3DS, Wii U) - Activision Blizzard
10. FIFA Soccer 13 (PS3, X360, PS Vita, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, PSP) - Electronic Arts

The Wii U has officially sold 3 million hardware units and 11 million pieces of software across the world since launch. Nintendo has cut its sales expectation for the system by 27 percent from 5.5 million to 4 million for its current financial year.

Activision CEO Robert Kotick said during an investor call last week that he was "somewhat disappointed" with the system's launch. Separately, GameStop Chief Financial Officer Rob Lloyd said this week that the Wii U has not lived up to expectation due to a lack of blockbuster first-party titles.

Aliens: Colonial Marines gets DX10 graphics from savvy modder
Feb 15th 2013, 12:19

DirectX 10 support added into Aliens: Colonial Marines by modder.

Days after its release on Tuesday, the modding community has gone to work on improving the visuals of Aliens: Colonial Marines' disappointing PC port.

MobDB user THX555 has released a 0.53mb mod, which contains files for shaders but only actually seems to change six .ini files. The end result is that DirectX 10 support is enabled, alongside other tweaked rendering settings.

When running Aliens: Colonial Marines in DirectX 10, shadows are softened and the game's textures are improved. Reflections and lighting are also affected.

THX555 also claims that his modifications will make the game load faster.

Kevin VanOrd wasn't particularly smitten with the game's out-of-the-box visuals. "The awkward storytelling is hardly energized by character models and facial animations so stiff that humans look every bit as synthetic as famed series androids Ash and Bishop," he said in GameSpot's 4.5 Aliens: Colonial Marines review.

"Aliens: Colonial Marines is not a looker. Graphics glitches abound, fire and goo effects are unconvincing, and clumsy visual details--jittery transitions in and out of canned animations, abrupt game-over screens upon death--give the game an air of carelessness."

Since its release earlier this week, there has been plenty of discussion about how much of the game's content headline developer Gearbox Software actually made.

Ghost in the Shell Online scheduled for early 2014
Feb 15th 2013, 07:26

Upcoming MMO shooter based on anime franchise to be developed by Dungeon Fighter Online team.

Nexon announced the launch schedule for the upcoming MMO shooter Ghost in The Shell online for Japan.

According to a Nexon press event held in Japan, the PC game will be out within the first half of 2014. The MMO shooter will allow players a choice between two factions: the cyber terrorists or Section 9, and character customization that determines how mechanized an avatar can be.

Players can also hack terminals and objects to change up the battlefield and even help teammates during PvE and PvP matches. Narrative-wise, the game will use elements from the anime Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd GIG, and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society.

The game is developed by Neople, the same team behind online MMO Dungeon Fighter Online. There are currently no details on whether the game will be localized or published outside of Japan.
