he Mother games are effective at relaying childhood's innocence and wonder, but the series is also a champion at swinging around and projecting the moments of shadowy, primal fear that gripped every single one of us when our parents tucked us under our Mario Bros. comforters and flicked the lights off. That's because nearly everything that happens in each adventure is experienced primarily through the eyes of children. When you're not quite tall enough to see over the counter at the bank, it makes you extra-sensitive to the dark things that hide in the corners at ground level--aliens, monsters, and even sinister plots that are capable of turning your seemingly infallible parents into pallid pawns that serve an unspeakable evil.
Whereas Mother 3's plot revolves more around the deconstruction of innocence through infiltrators disguised as decent human beings, the original Mother and its direct sequel, EarthBound, utilize more childlike themes and bad guys, including men from outer space, mysterious meteors, and simple time travel. That's not to suggest these themes are childish; again, they can be wondrous and terrifying when they're visited by a kid.
