First screens for ex-Bulletstorm dev's new game Sep 19th 2013, 15:53 The Astronauts release first batch of images for upcoming "weird fiction horror" game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter.
The Astronauts, a new eight-person studio founded by key members of the Bulletstorm development team, have released the first images for their Unreal Engine 3-powered game The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. Gamers are cast as Paul Prospero, an occult detective, who receives a "disturbing" letter from Ethan Carter, realizing that the boy is in grave danger. When he arrives at Ethan's home, he finds that Ethan has vanished in the wake of a "brutal murder." Players will use both regular and supernatural detective skills to solve the case of what happened to the missing boy. Using a first-person perspective, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter has players interacting with and exploring the environment to find clues about the case. The more clues players discover, the clearer and longer Paul's vision will become. The game is described overall as a "weird fiction horror" title. There is no combat in The Vanishing of Ethan Carter. "If our game leaves any scars, you won't be able to see them," the developer said. "The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is our own attempt to tell a multilayered story while keeping the player completely immersed and constantly engaged--with the unique sense of presence only video games can offer," the developer said. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter is currently in development for the PC, though The Astronauts said it is hopeful to bring the game to next-generation consoles in the future. The Astronauts was founded in 2012 by Adrian Chmielarz, Andrzej Poznanski, and Michal Kosieradzki, the original three founders of People Can Fly. A new Grand Theft Auto game set in London is unlikely, according to Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser. Speaking with the Guardian, Houser said the developer could return to the setting of Grand Theft Auto: London 1961 and Grand Theft Auto: London 1969, but for a new franchise, not Grand Theft Auto. "I think for us, my gut feeling is, GTA London was cool for the time, but games were more limited then," Houser said. "These days I think we would love to set a game in the UK, set in London, whatever, but I don't know if it would be a GTA game. I think there are plenty of great stories we could tell about the UK, great environments to showcase, great gameplay mechanics that could have a UK bent to them--I just don't think it would be a GTA necessarily." Houser explained that Rockstar Games has "many" ideas for new games, but it does not have the development bandwidth to pursue everything it wants to. His own perception is that "GTA is America," he said. Since the Grand Theft Auto series transitioned from a top-down perspective to a third-person open-world series, games in the franchise have been set in fictional cities based on major United States hubs like Los Angeles, Miami, and New York City. Grand Theft Auto V launched on Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, generating a record-setting $800 million on launch day alone. Versions of the game for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are likely to be released in 2014, according to one analyst. The Change.org calling on Rockstar Games to release Grand Theft Auto V on PC has surpassed 450,000 signatures, up by more than 100,000 in three days. According to a Change.org representative, the petition is the largest gaming petition ever launched through the site and is the 10th largest global campaign the site has ever hosted. It was also the most viewed petition on Change.org in the past week. According to Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser, a PC version of the open-world game is "up for consideration," though that's all the company has said on the matter. The petition says it is a "big shame" that GTAV is not announced for the PC, specifically calling out the modding community being a "huge part" of PC gaming. "Modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have," a line from the petition reads. A since-removed Rockstar Leeds job advertisement sought a programmer to help bring the company's "latest titles" to PC. This would potentially include GTAV. The PC iteration of Grand Theft Auto IV launched about eight months after the console versions shipped in April 2008. GTAV launched on Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, generating a record-setting $800 million on launch day alone. Versions of the game for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are likely to be released in 2014, according to one analyst. Early in the process of developing the 2003 original The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Nintendo designers considered having beams shoot out of Link's eyes as a means to justify how large they were, it has been revealed. "Now that the eyes had gotten much larger, we wanted to make their facial expressions richer by increasing the number of patterns for the eyes and mouth," developer Satoru Takizawa said in the latest Iwata Asks interview feature. "Partway through, we even talked about having beams come out of those eyes! (laughs)." Takizawa explained that Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto said the development team needed to supply a reason for Link's eyes being so big. However, this feature never made it far. As Takizawa explained, "I don't think [eye] beams were really an option, though." The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD launches digitally through the Nintendo eShop tomorrow, September 20, alongside a special $300 Wii U bundle. The packaged version will be released on October 4. The Wii U's recently announced price cut also goes into effect tomorrow, with the 32GB system dropping from $350 to $300. Microsoft and Capcom Vancouver have released new details about the online co-op mode for the Xbox One launch title Dead Rising 3. In the online mode, players can jump in or out of a friend's game at any time. All progression and experience points achieved in a friend's game will carry back to their own game, Microsoft said. In addition, all missions completed in a friend's game will also be registered as "complete" in their own, making it so players will never need to go back and replay a co-op mission. In Dead Rising 3's co-op mode, players will drop into the boots of Dick, a "wisecracking trucker." According to his description, Dick sees Dead Rising 3 main character Nick Ramos as his best chance of escaping Los Perdidos alive and will play a "key role" in the story. In addition to detailing Dead Rising 3's co-op mode, Capcom also revealed "super-combo weapons" for the game. This new tier of combo weapons requires at least three components to craft and features "unique abilities that let you decimate crowds of zombies with devastating effect." Examples provided include the ultimate powershout (a concussive horn made of traffic cones), the ultimate grim reaper (a flaming scythe made of a katana sword, scythe, gas canister, and mask), and the massive bomb, described as a mini-nuke that obliterates all zombies close by. Dead Rising 3 is an Xbox One exclusive and will be released as a launch title for the platform on November 22. Its gameworld is larger than the first two installments combined. Activision Blizzard's attempt to separate itself from parent company Vivendi has been put on hold. The Delaware Chancery Court this week issued a preliminary injunction following multiple lawsuits from shareholders seeking to block the deal. The transaction will continue to be halted until its terms are modified on appeal or the transaction is approved by a shareholder vote of non-Vivendi stockholders. "Activision Blizzard remains committed to the transaction and is exploring the steps it will take to complete the transaction as expeditiously as possible," the company said in a statement. In July this year, Activision Blizzard announced its intention to separate from its parent company, Vivendi. The purchase would see around 429 million shares change hands, totaling roughly $5.83 billion in cash. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick and co-chairman Brian Kelly are responsible for the purchase of 172 million shares, worth an estimated $2.34 billion. The pair have personally contributed $100 million to secure the sale. As a result, Kelly would become sole chairman under the restructure, with Vivendi retaining a minority 12 percent stake in the business. The deal was orchestrated by Activision Blizzard's management team and assisted by investors. The intended trade would result in shareholders owning a controlling stake in the business. Last week, shareholder Douglas M. Hayes stated in a lawsuit that the sale would "unjustly enrich Kelly, Kotick, and the other participants." Baird analyst Colin Sebastian says Rockstar's open-world game to hit next-generation consoles next year to "extend the value of the franchise."
According to Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian, Rockstar Games' open-world game Grand Theft Auto V will be released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014. In a note to investors today, Sebastian said releasing the game on next-generation platforms would "help extend the value of the franchise." GTAV launched on Tuesday and generated $800 million in 24 hours, setting a launch-day record for parent publisher Take-Two Interactive as well as the Grand Theft Auto series overall. Sebastian called this figure today the "largest entertainment property launch in history." "We are now modeling 13-14 million units shipped in F2Q. We believe there is still potential upside to our targets," he said. "However, given the possibility that sales of GTA are front-loaded, we will await further sales data before adjusting our expectations further." The PS4 launches in North America on November 15, while the Xbox One is out on November 22. GTAV's multiplayer component--Grand Theft Auto Online--will be released as a free update on October 1. Sony announced that its next-generation console will allow game capture over HDMI during a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show 2013 overnight. The company's head of third-party relations, Brad Douglas, added on Twitter that more "details will follow soon." Former Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, who joined the company in 1949 and is widely credited for turning Nintendo into a leading video game developer, has died at age 85. Under Yamauchi's leadership, Nintendo diversified from its beginnings as a trading card company and introduced both gaming hardware, such as the NES, and arcade hits like Donkey Kong into market in the '80s, as well as establishing the development studios that would go on to create some of the industry's most enduring video game characters. He also oversaw the release of the Super Nintendo, GameBoy, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and GameCube. Details of Yamauchi's passing have not been revealed; however, Nintendo has released a statement saying the company "is in mourning today from the sad loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi, who sadly passed away this morning."
