Apple today announced an all-new iPhone 5S, the first ever mobile phone to include a 64-bit chip. The company described the new smartphone as the "most forward-thinking phone anyone's ever made." It will be available on September 20 starting at $200 on contract for a 16GB model. "The PC world made the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit and it took years. Today you're going to see that Apple is going to do it on one day," Apple said today during a press event attended by CNET. Battery life for the iPhone 5S will be equal or greater than the iPhone 5, including 10 hours of 3G talk time, 10 hours of LTE browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours for music, and 250 hours on standby. Apple also touted the iPhone 5S' new camera, saying it will boast "SLR-level" quality. The camera will also include a new True Tone Flash that will analyze and present the proper-color flash for a certain situation. It will also feature a new Burst Mode that shoots ten frames-per-second and automatically chooses the "best" image. A new 120 frames-per-second slow-motion feature for video is also included with the camera. The iPhone 5S also introduces Touch ID, a new security feature for the phone. Built into the home button, it will read a user's fingerprint and unlock the phone that way. Multiple fingerprints can be registered on a single device and it can also be used to make iTunes purchases. Also during the event Chair Entertainment cofounder and creative director Donald Mustard revealed Infinity Blade III. It will be available available in the App Store alongside the new iPhone 5S as a launch-day game. Apple explained during the event that the iPhone 5S has 56X the performance of the original iPhone and twice the power of the iPhone 5. It will run Open GL-ES 3.0 for gaming. "This means that graphics-intense applications can bring their console- and desktop-level performance to the iPhone 5S," the company said. The 8GB iPhone 4S will be sold as a free phone (with contract) beginning September 20. The traditional packaged game market is facing tough times, according to Resident Evil and Dead Rising publisher Capcom. As part of its 2013 Annual Report published today, the company spoke about "rapid changes" in the consumer market that it will face going forward. "Analyzing the consumer market by platform, we forecast severe contraction in the package market, which is expected to shrink by $5.3 billion in 2017 (down 28.8 percent from 2012)," the company said. "At the same time, we forecast significant growth in the DLC market by $7.8 billion (up 109.9 percent)." In 2012, the packaged market was worth $18.4 billion, Capcom said, down 17.9 percent year-over-year and the fourth straight year of negative growth. Going forward, Capcom said it will allocate management resources to downloadable content to "ensure sufficient earnings." To this end, the company will increase the staff in its Consumer, Mobile, and PC online development areas by 100 people each during the next fiscal year. Capcom president and COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto explained that in the traditional packaged games business model, the company used to recoup investment costs by simply pushing more titles out the door. However, the company is now shifting to a more DLC-focused approach. "But now, even after game sales, the provision of digitally distributed content (DLC) facilitates longer enjoyment of each title, resulting in a business model with the potential for earnings on a continuous basis," Tsujimoto said. Tsujimoto acknowledged that Capcom has not been quick enough to adapt its business to be more DLC-oriented, but said the company will shift this attitude going forward. "I regret to say that, up to now, we had few plans for the full-scale implementation of DLC," he said. "From here on out, we need to focus on the long-term provision of content starting at the earliest stages of development."
