Xbox One, PS4 stretch goals added to Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter campaign Sep 9th 2013, 16:46 Should funding reach $3.3 million, Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune's team will bring digital version of new game to upcoming consoles.
If funding for Mega Man creator Keiji Inafune's new side-scrolling game Mighty No. 9 reaches $3.3 million on Kickstarter, developer Inti Creates will bring the game to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, it was announced today. "We know by the time the game ships in 2015, many of you will be proud owners of one next-gen system or the other--or maybe both!," reads an update on the Mighty No. 9 Kickstarter page. Should funding reach this level, Mighty No. 9 will be available on platforms including PC, Mac, Linux, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Though the game could come to next-generation consoles, no stretch goals for portable versions have been announced. This could change, according to the developer. "Handhelds are still a possibility," the Mighty No. 9 team said. "Just because you don’t see them in this next set of goals doesn’t mean we aren’t working on this. We know many of you have been asking about the possibility of Vita and 3DS versions of Mighty No. 9, so now we know the desire is most definitely there--what's left is to figure out if the money and production realities can make this possible." The developer said there could be "other ways" to bring Mighty No. 9 to portables (besides stretch goals) that it is currently looking into, or it could be a stretch goal after all. At press time, funding for Mighty. No. 9 stands at $1.9 million from nearly 33,000 backers. The campaign closes on October 1. Should funding reach $2 million, a Boss Mode--where players can challenge all the bosses back-to-back with a clock ticking to keep track of time--will be added. Inafune announced and launched the Kickstarter campaign for Mighty No. 9 during PAX Prime last month. It reached its initial $900,000 target in under two days. Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has responded to recent criticism concerning the intentionally "sexy" depiction of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain's female character Quiet. In a string of tweets recently, Kojima told fans that there is a contextual reason why Quiet--who never speaks in the game--was designed the way she was. In a series of tweets last week, Kojima said he directed MGSV's art director to make some of the game's characters, including Quiet, "more erotic" in an effort to encourage cosplay and promote figurine sales. He has since clarified these tweets, saying "sexy" was a better word to use. "What I'm really trying to do is create unique characters. One of those is, of course, Quiet. She's a really unique character. I wanted to add that sexiness to her," Kojima said. "It wasn't really supposed to be erotic, but sexy." Halo designer David Ellis took issue with the depiction of Quiet, calling the character design "disgusting" and evidence that the game industry is "full of man babies." Nintendo shares fell 8.4 percent today after the Mario maker was not added to the Nikkei 225 Stock Average. Shares dropped to ¥10,860 ($109) at the close of trading, the most precipitous dip since July 2011, Bloomberg reports. Prior to today, Nintendo's share value had gained 31 percent this year on reports that the company's listing would be transferred to Tokyo from Osaka in a move that could have seen the stock added to the Nikkei, Bloomberg pointed out. Last month, Nintendo announced a price cut for the Wii U, dropping the going rate from $350 to $300 for the 8GB Deluxe model effective September 20. The 8GB Basic version will be phased out. Nintendo also recently announced an entry-level portable system, the $130 Nintendo 2DS, which will launch on October 12 alongside Pokemon X and Y. Nintendo will ship a number of marquee first-party titles in the coming months for Wii U, including The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD and Super Mario 3D World, but not all are hopeful that the struggling system can regain its footing. "The early signs of key first-party software inducing a major turnaround in Wii U console fundamentals are not promising, and the outlook for third-party support is grim," CLSA analyst Jay Defibaugh told Bloomberg. "The value of iconic Nintendo franchises may be declining as younger generations discover gaming through mobile devices." Upcoming first-person shooter Call of Duty: Ghosts is poised to be the most preordered game of 2013, according to a statement from GameStop today. "Call of Duty is an entertainment juggernaut and cultural phenomenon. We are excited for the upcoming release of the new installment of this blockbuster franchise, Call of Duty: Ghosts," GameStop SVP of merchandising Bob Puzon said. "We look forward to celebrating the worldwide November launch of this great game that is on track to be the most preordered title of the year," he added. In August, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg said preorders for Call of Duty: Ghosts were "well below" the record-setting pace of Call of Duty: Black Ops II, though he noted this was not unexpected during a console transition year. "However, our quantitative consumer research indicates that hesitation amongst past [Call of Duty] preorderers is primarily due to not knowing which platform they will be playing on, which is natural at this time in the console transition," Hirshberg said at the time. Activision also announced today a new partnership with GameStop that will see the retailer offer a discounted price for Eminem's upcoming The Marshall Mathers LP 2, which releases on November 5 alongside Call of Duty: Ghosts. Those who preorder Call of Duty: Ghosts at GameStop will receive, at launch, a code that allows them to download a special edition of the new album for $9. The offer is redeemable through Monday, November 19. "I'm excited to continue to be a part of the franchise," Eminem said in a statement. In August, Eminem debuted his new song "Survival" during the Call of Duty: Ghosts multiplayer reveal event in Los Angeles. The singer's partnership with Activision will continue this month with a new music video trailer featuring the song "Survival" and Call of Duty: Ghosts. When the NPD Group reports United States industry sales for August on Thursday, the findings will be positive. That's according to Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz, who said in a note to investors today that console/handheld software sales are expected to post their first double-digit gain since April 2011. He said this sector will rise 21 percent year-over-year, while total packaged software sales (including PC) will jump 18 percent compared to last year. A driving force for the positive comparison to last year is the shift of this year's Madden game from the September NPD month to August this year, Creutz said. Still, even without Madden NFL 25's 1 million sales, August would be close to break-even, he noted, due to other major releases like Saints Row IV (522,000 units), Disney Infinity (225,00 units), Splinter Cell: Blacklist (209,000 units), and Pikmin 3 (185,000 units). The positive industry sales trend is likely to continue through the rest of the year, Creutz noted, due to the launches of major games like Grand Theft Auto V (September 17) and Battlefield 4 (October 29). November and December are looking strong, but much of this depends on the launch quantities and attach rates of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, he said. Overall, 2013 software sales are expected to finish in positive territory for the first time since 2008, Creutz said. An Xbox Music app is now available on iOS and Android, Microsoft announced today. In addition, the company has launched a free and ad-supported streaming option through Xbox Music on the Web. Users with an Xbox Music Pass ($10/month or $100/year) can access the catalog's 30 million songs through their iOS or Android mobile devices and create an unlimited number of playlists through the new Web portal at music.xbox.com. Unlimited free streaming is available through the Web for a period of six months. Microsoft also laid out plans for the future, saying it will add Radio to the free Web player in the coming months and will introduce a Web Playlist tool for Xbox Music on Windows 8 on October 17 with the arrival of Windows 8.1. On top of that, Microsoft said it will release additional updates for iOS and Android platforms, including a new offline mode that will allow users to save their music to their device, nullifying the need for Internet or a data connection. In a rare interview with the Guardian, Rockstar Games cofounder and vice president of creativity Dan Houser spoke about how the studio has been offered "many times" to create a Grand Theft Auto movie. "We've been offered, many times, and it's never appealed," said Houser. "The money's never been close to be worth risking one's crown jewels. Our small dabblings with Hollywood have always left us running back to games. The freedom we have to do what we want creatively is of enormous value." "The second you go near Hollywood, people seem willing, or have been forced, to lose a lot of that control. That sort of amorphous 'that won't test well' attitude is exactly how we don't work. We've always tried to think of stuff that's innovative and new, and to go into a world where that's not encouraged would be horrible." "There's still plenty of kudos in doing a film, but you shouldn't ever do anything in your life for kudos," added Houser. "It's much easier to imagine GTA as a TV series, as the form is closer, but I still think we'd be losing too much to ever actually do it. We've got this big open-world experience that's 100 hours long, and that gives players control over what they do, what they see, and how they see it. A world where you can do everything from rob a bank to take a yoga lesson to watch TV, all in your own time. How do you condense that into a two-hour or 12-hour experience where you take away the main things: player agency and freedom?" "We love games and we think we've got something to say in games, and that games have plenty to say. So shouldn't we just continue doing that?" Speaking to GameSpot in 2011 to reflect on Grand Theft Auto III, Houser said the developer was trying to "get past" the film industry. "We didn't make a GTA movie for a reason, and the choice was ours," said Houser at the time. "We probably could have got most people to do it, but we had no interest in doing it. One of the points about GTA was, it was the first time where if you thought about moving it into cinema, you were condensing it, not expanding it. It wasn't like how do you find all the things you put into the film? It was how do you streamline this into a cinematic experience? That's something where we never figured out the answer to the question. It was something that didn't exist in 50 different media. It was a game property, and that was something to cherish and not be embarrassed by." "But no, we never remotely actively pursued a movie. Because we thought in games we could do something that was maybe limited in lots of ways, but in scope and ambition was beyond movies. Games are trying to, hopefully, aspire to do something that movies can't do. That's what's exciting about them. We're not trying to be like the film industry; we're trying to get past the film industry." Grand Theft Auto V will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 17. Respawn Entertainment's upcoming online shooter Titanfall will not post Call of Duty-level sales numbers, at least not right away, according to cofounder Vince Zampella. Speaking on southern California's KFI AM60 recently, Zampella said building a new franchise takes time. "It's a new brand," Zampella said about Titanfall. "You build up momentum over the years when you put out a new brand. It's starting over, so it won't sell as well [as Call of Duty]." "But for us it's’kind of a passion project. We love it. It's something new," he added. "It's taking the old paradigm of these shooter games being very grounded and two-dimensional and now adding this verticality to it and making it something that's a new experience; something that people haven't seen before." Also in the interview, Zampella confirmed that Titanfall--a multiplayer-only shooter--will retail for $60 at launch in 2014 for Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. Zampella co-created the now-billion dollar Call of Duty series at Infinity Ward and worked on the franchise from its onset until Activision fired him and other founder Jason West in 2010. The pair founded Respawn Entertainment in 2010 with dozens of former Infinity Ward developers and secured funding for Titanfall through the EA Partners program. West has since left the company. "Revelations" from the Call of Duty lawsuit reportedly led to a rift between West and Zampella. A source said in June that Zampella felt West was "sabotaging" Respawn Entertainment. The crowdfunding campaign for Chris Roberts' upcoming PC space simulator Star Citizen has surpassed $18 million, up from $17 million less than one week ago. Star Citizen is already the most crowdfunded project--across all mediums--of all time. "When we first proposed Squadron 42 and Star Citizen, the goal was to bring back space sims and prove that PC games never died. We thought that was an important goal worthy of our effort and your support," developer Cloud Imperium Games said. "We never dreamed that you would take that even farther and become our partners in changing how games are developed. As always, thank you." Funding for Star Citizen currently stands at almost $18.4 million from nearly 250,000 backers. For hitting the $18 million mark, players will unlock the "exclusive star system." This means all supporters who backed the project prior to reaching $18 million will be able to start their in-game journey in a system that is unavailable to others as a starting point. Cloud Imperium Games also announced that if funding reaches $20 million, first-person combat on "select lawless planets" will be added. No further details were given. Star Citizen has been in development at Cloud Imperium Games for more than a year. The game itself includes a "sophisticated storyline" that is set in a persistent online universe. According to Roberts, it will fuse elements of his previous games, Wing Commander and Freelancer. Support for the virtual reality headset Oculus Rift is planned. Star Citizen is expected to release in late 2014. Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin has explained how the developer is working to change sniper rifles in this year's Call of Duty: Ghosts, adding that the series' traditional "quick-scoping" techniques have been affected. Rubin says that the new Marksman class in Ghosts has allowed the developer to focus on high-calibre weaponry. "The changes we’ve made," said Rubin on Twitlonger, "like dual render scopes and increased damage really make snipers a great competitive class to use. We’ve also done a lot with map design (sight lines and cover) to ensure that all classes are viably effective." "Both short range and long range classes will be effective on the same maps," he added. "However in re-envisioning sniper rifles some aspects, such as sway timing, have changed the way sniper rifles function and so traditional 'quick-scoping' has been affected. Is it gone completely? Maybe. It certainly won’t be viable in the way it previously was." "Can’t wait for you snipers out there to get your hands on these new sniper rifles and try them out for yourselves," concluded Rubin. Infinity Ward previously confirmed that the Xbox One and PC versions of Call of Duty: Ghosts would support dedicated servers. Call of Duty: Ghosts will be released in November for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii U. 80s-themed Far Cry 3 spin-off Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon could be turned into a boxed retail release, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said. Blood Dragon was released as a downloadable earlier this year for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, and has sold more than a million copies. In an interview with Game Informer, Guillemot says its success helps justify the company's push into digital software. "What's changing is that there's more digital sales," Guillemot said. "So it means that you can come up with games that are smaller in size but bigger in innovation, because you don't target a huge group--you target specific audiences." Guillemot later confirmed that Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon had broken a million in sales, and that "maybe we'll go to retail at one point so we'll achieve a bit more."
