Microsoft on Xbox One Vertical Orientation: 'Do it at your own risk' Sep 20th 2013, 06:48 Microsoft told GameSpot today that the Xbox One won't support vertical orientation due to the inclusion of a slot loading drive.
The Xbox One won't support vertical orientation, and could damage the console, according to Albert Panello, senior director of product management and planning at Xbox. Panello revealed to GameSpot at the Tokyo Game Show, "We don't support vertical orientation; do it at your own risk." He clarified that "it wouldn't be a cooling problem, we just didn't design the drive for vertical. Because it's a slot loading drive, we just didn't design it for both". The Xbox One isn't the only system to feature a slot loading drive; both the PlayStation 3--original and slim models--and PlayStation 4 have a similar design, and users are free to orient those consoles horizontally or vertically without risking damage to the console. Panello stated that Microsoft discovered that "we found, interestingly enough, that 80 percent of people, believe it or not, have their Xbox [360] horizontally". The Xbox One is scheduled for launch in North America, most European markets, Australia, and New Zealand on November 22 this year, with follow-up releases in Japan and the remaining European markets in 2014. Competitive gaming team Evil Geniuses (EG) has announced its new Dota 2 roster via a letter posted by the team to their fans on the team’s official Facebook. The letter, which details ups and downs of the Evil Geniuses team over the last year, began by reflecting positively on the five that made up the Evil Geniuses squad during the winter of 2012 and the spring of 2013. The letter noted that the players were, ’the kind of people you want representing your team.’ As the post continues, the writer laments about about the roster changes that took place just prior to the International 3 qualifiers, where the team, surprisingly, came up short. It continues, candidly, that ’as often happens in eSports, things changed - and changed quickly.’ The letter ends with a list of five players who will now make up the Evil Geniuses Dota 2 division. Clinton ’Fear’ Loomis: Team captain and Support Jio ’Jeyo’ Madayag: Carry Saahil ’UNiVeRSe’ Arora: Off-lane Ioannis "Fogged" Loucas: Support Arif "MSS" Anwar: Middle Loomis, the team’s captain, and Madayag are the only returning members from the previous Evil Geniuses lineup. Arora, who was part of EG in 2012, and Loucas both recently played under the Team Dignitas banner. Anwar has not formally played for a major team. Speaking about the line-up's drastic change, Loomis told GameSpot, ’With [The International 3] coming to a close, change comes to many teams, and EG is no exception this year. I'm sad to say goodbye to the majority of my teammates from last year, but I am very excited and feel reinvigorated to see what the future will bring with a fresh start. Dedication and commitment are what I've been looking for in teammates for a very long time and I feel like I found the four perfect guys to fit that bill. With the addition of MSS, it will be nice to have some fresh talent that is hungry to learn. He will strive to be the best, and in the process will motivate the rest of us to do the same." According to a number of professional Dota 2 players who wished to remain anonymous, Loomis was allegedly given free reign over the roster. Several instances of major roster revisions at Loomis’ discretion were reported. Braxton "Brax" Paulson, support player for LGD International, had two weeks of practice with EG scheduled before being replaced by Loucas, sources have told GameSpot. Basic contract terms were supposed to be in place, but the Evil Geniuses' captain dropped Paulson after it became clear that his level of focus and dedication, especially in terms of practice, was insufficient. Sources close to GameSpot have reported among the players that Evil Geniuses removed, the most difficult and trying exclusion was that of Jimmy ’DeMoN’ Ho’s. Ho, who has been on the team since 2011, had the opportunity to work with the organization in some capacity outside that of a professional player. Those conversations between EG and Ho reportedly fell through amicably. The same sources added that the major tenant in Loomis’ roster selection was consistency and ability to focus. According those quoting Loomis, the major deterrent in Evil Geniuses’ performance this year came from differing opinions on practice and work ethic. The new Dota 2 lineup will compete publicly for the first time on Friday September 20 at 9AM PDT in the WePlay Dota 2 League. In the lead-up to Battlefield 4's launch next month, EA Games executive vice president Patrick Soderlund has spoken out to say the publisher won't quit until it dethrones Call of Duty from its post as the industry's top-performing shooter series. "Competition is good. It brings the best out of people," Soderlund told MCV. "If there was only Battlefield or only Call of Duty, then the development teams might have been a little bit more content. We don't look at them necessarily and mimic what they do." "But we think about them. Maybe they weren't thinking about us much when we made Battlefield 3, but I can tell you, they are thinking about us now. They need too [sic]," he added. "We made a dent in the FPS market and we took share from them. And I am not going to give up until I’m No.1 and I am going to make sure I'm No.1." Soderlund said EA is spending a "ton" of money on this effort, with development teams "killing themselves" every year to create compelling products. "I want to give our consumers the best I can. We will strive to be No.1. If I said: 'No.5 is probably fine,' it's hard for people to rally behind that message," Soderlund said. "But I wouldn't say we could be No.1 if I didn't think we could. I think I have the right team, the right product, and the right strategy to get there." Activision's only major shooter franchise is Call of Duty, while Electronic Arts has Battlefield and Titanfall. Soderlund said EA feels no pressure to release Battlefield on a yearly basis because, "to me, it is about a balanced portfolio." EA recently took Medal of Honor out of its rotation after 2012's Medal of Honor: Warfighter fell below sales targets. Battlefield 4 launches October 29 for current-generation consoles and PC, while Call of Duty: Ghosts releases seven days later for the same platforms on November 5. Both games will be released as launch titles for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November. Electronic Arts today announced the Cities of Tomorrow expansion for SimCity, the first add-on for Maxis' city-building game that has shifted over 2 million copies to date. Due out on November 12 for the PC and Mac, the Cities of Tomorrow expansion is set 50 years in the future. Players are able to use "new technologies" and "experimental urban planning techniques" to shape the future of their cities. New regions, technology, city specializations, and transportation methods will be featured in the Cities of Tomorrow expansion. For the first time in the history of the SimCity series, cities can be built vertically with multizone "MegaTowers," EA said in a statement. "Will they create a utopian society underpinned by clean technology under the auspices of the Academy, or encourage giant corporation OmegaCo to strip-mine natural resources and pollute in the name of feeding consumerism?" EA said. After players choose whether they want their sims to live in peace and harmony or as part of an "exploited workforce," they can further affect their worlds by using an all-new and unspecified disaster scenario that is exclusive to the Cities of Tomorrow expansion. EA did not name a price for the Cities of Tomorrow expansion. For more on SimCity, check out GameSpot's review. [ Watch Video ] Read and Post Comments | Get the full article at GameSpot | |
