Dark Souls II will feature a number of key changes to underlying gameplay systems, according to From Software director Yui Tanimura, including revamped rules for player interactions, co-op, and PVP. Tanimura explained the changes during a recent presentation attended by GameSpot. Unlike the peer-to-peer lobbies that fuel the original Dark Souls, players will now populate dedicated servers, like the spiritual predecessor, Demon's Souls, thus increasing the number of players that populate a given instance of the game. In order to encourage player interaction, blood messaging is built into Dark Souls II as a system command, negating the original game's item requirements. Summoned players--players who join the game of another character--no longer automatically exit a game upon the defeat of a boss. By utilizing different sized White Soapstone items, players gain different amounts of time for co-op play, but this allotment depletes as the summoned player defeats enemies. Players can also now summon two players at once, creating a three-player co-op experience. When a player's game is invaded, they have the chance to receive backup from fellow covenant members if they belong to the "Way of the Blue" covenant. This will make it harder for stronger players to torment low-level characters, and give players a chance to act as a savior for the weak. The final changes noted during the presentation pertained to characters with undead status. If a player dies while fighting as an undead character, their HP limits will decrease with each consecutive death. In order to recover from undead status, players now must expend a "Human Effigy" item, rather than an amount of humanity. Lastly, unlike the original Dark Souls, undead players are susceptible to invaders in the sequel. Dark Souls II will be released on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 11, 2014. A release date for the PC version has not been announced. PlayStation 3 owners in North America, Europe, and Australasia can sign up for the beta, which begins on October 12. A future Rockstar Games-developed title could feature a female in a lead playable role, according to cofounder Dan Houser. Speaking with The Guardian, Houser explained that featuring a female lead in Grand Theft Auto V "didn't feel natural," but made clear that the company is not against the idea of introducing a female protagonist for a new game. "We didn't really think about it this time. That's not to say that we couldn't or we wouldn't," Houser said. "This character set is just what came to us: it wasn't, 'we've got X and Y so we need Z,' we weren't trying to do it off a checklist--I don't think that will ever give you something that's believable or engaging." "In the future, could we do a game with a lead female character? Of course," he added. "We just haven't found the right game for it yet, but it's one of the things that we always think about. It didn't feel natural for this game but definitely for the right game in the future--with the right themes, it could be fantastic. But for GTA V, this was the organic thing that came up, these were the characters what [sic] would display the themes we wanted to think about." Houser said previously that "the concept of being masculine was so key to this story," about GTAV's male-only protagonist roster. GTAV's three playable protagonists are Trevor, Michael, and Franklin. The game's online component, GTA Online, will allow players to create a female character. This game mode will launch on October 1 as a free update to the game. GTAV launched yesterday for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It generated $800 million in 24 hours, making its launch-day sales the strongest in Take-Two history and for the GTA series overall. Massively multiplayer online game Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is shutting down after five years of operation, Mythic producer Carrie Gouskos announced today on the game's website. "Games Workshop has cultivated a world class IP. We were lucky enough to play in their universe for nearly a decade, with five great long years live. However, like all things--our contract has come to an end," Gouskos said. "Both Games Workshop and Mythic agreed to part ways, despite how hard it is emotionally on us to let the game go," she added. "It has been a tremendous honor to work with Games Workshop and even though we may be parting ways, our relationship with them remains strong." The game will be officially closed on December 18. Mythic will no longer be selling three-month game codes and players won't have the ability to auto-renew their accounts going forward. Having received solid reviews following its September 2008 launch, Warhammer Online initially appeared to be on a World of Warcraft-challenging trajectory. Three weeks after launch, the game peaked at 750,000 registered users, but that figure had dwindled to just 300,000 by February 2009. In March 2009, Mythic announced that it would be taking 63 of the game's servers offline in an effort to consolidate the evaporating player base. Mythic was also reportedly heavily affected by Electronic Arts' substantial headcount reduction enacted at the end of 2009. According to unconfirmed reports, more than one-third of the studio was laid off as part of EA's 1,500-job culling. Warhammer Online may be closing down, but multiple new Warhammer titles are in development. Warhammer 40,000: Eternal Crusade is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and is the third new Warhammer game to be announced since March, following a new smartphone and tablet game from the studio behind Family Guy Online, the turn-based strategy game from Slitherine, and multiple titles from Creative Assembly.
