Blizzard defends Starcraft 2 WCS finals clash with The International 3 Jul 23rd 2013, 02:26 Starcraft 2 World Championship Series Season 2 league regional finals date conflict with Valve's Dota 2 tournament "not intentional".
Developer Blizzard has addressed fan backlash to the timing of the Starcraft 2 World Championship Series (WCS) Season 2 regional finals, which sees it run at the same time as Valve's The International 3. Posting on Reddit, Blizzard senior manager of eSports Kim Phan said the date clash was "unintentional", and was a result of wanting to host the season finals event in late August. "Unfortunately this has resulted in overlaps with other major eSports events. These conflicts were certainly not intentional. This simple fact is that as eSports has grown with more events, more games, and more viewers; it's nearly impossible to avoid all conflicts. Many major weekend events already host multiple games, which are running simultaneous game streams in conflict with each other," she said. Blizzard recently announced the dates of their Starcraft 2 WCS Season 2 League finals for regions North America, Europe and Korea. The regional finals will take place from August 10-11. The top players in each region will compete for the opportunity to advance to the global finals at BlizzCon, where they can play-off for first place and claim the title as the 2013 Starcraft 2 World Champion. The dates coincide with that of Valve's Dota 2 competitive event, The International 3. At the time of writing, The International 3 reached a new milestone in offering the largest prize pool in competitive gaming history at $2.6 million. The International 3 will run from August 7 through 11 at Seattle's Benaroya Hall. Fifteen of the tournament's 16 teams have already been invited, with the final spot up for grabs in a qualifier in Seattle immediately before The International 3 begins. The revamped Starcraft 2 World Championship series was revealed earlier this year with a total prize pool of $1.6 million. Blizzard declined to comment when approached by GameSpot. The Change.org petition calling on Rockstar Games to release a PC version of Grand Theft Auto V has surpassed 200,000 signatures. At press time, 207,971 have signed the online document. This figure is up from 150,000 in February and 100,000 at the end of November. According to Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser, a PC version of the open-world game is "up for consideration," though that's all the company has said on the matter. The petition says it is a "big shame" that GTAV is not announced for the PC, specifically calling out the modding community being a "huge part" of PC gaming. "Modded GTA is some of the most insanely fun times you can have," a line from the petition reads. A since-removed Rockstar Leeds job advertisement sought a programmer to help bring the company's "latest titles" to PC. This would potentially include GTAV. The PC iteration of Grand Theft Auto IV launched about eight months after the console versions shipped in April 2008. The upcoming Assassin's Creed: Brahman comic will feature "extremely strong hints" about where the mainline franchise is headed after this fall's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Writer Brenden Fletcher revealed the news to GameSpot in an interview from San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. He explained that players who want to know what's next for the series will want to pick up a copy of the new comic. "The story that's in the present is really significant and is filled with hints for what you'll see in the future," Fletcher said. "I can't say much more than that about the hints, of course, but if you're really excited about Assassin's Creed games and you want to know where everything's going past Black Flag and into the future, there are extremely strong hints in Brahman." Assassin's Creed: Brahman is set in 1839 India, though the comic does bounce back and forth between the past and the present. It features an all-new assassin, Arbaaz Mir, and takes place during the Colonial British rule. According to Fletcher, in Brahman, Mir is faced with the struggle of choosing between what he wants in his heart and what the Brotherhood is forcing him to do. At the core of the story will be a hunt for an extremely powerful object. The comic is due out this fall. Ubisoft Toronto is currently collaborating on the next Assassin's Creed game, though details about this project have not been revealed. Ubisoft has launched a new core Assassin's Creed game every year since 2009. World of Warcraft and Diablo studio Blizzard Entertainment has filed a trademark application with the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) for "Cute But Deadly." The application covers a range of goods and services, including milk bottle caps, socks, t-shirts, papercraft, and action figures, among other things. "Cute But Deadly" is not likely the name of a new Blizzard Entertainment game, as the application does not mention video games in any capacity. A Blizzard Entertainment representative was not immediately available to comment on how it plans to use the trademark. The next new release from Blizzard Entertainment will be the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of Diablo III, which are set to launch on September 3.
