State of Decay no longer banned in Australia Jul 11th 2013, 23:51 R18+ rating granted to State of Decay special edition; game no longer banned in Australia.
Undead Labs’ zombie-survival game State of Decay has been granted an R18+ adult rating by the Classification Board, receiving approval to be sold in Australia. The game was previously refused classification on the grounds that it contained ’illicit or proscribed drug use related to incentives or rewards". The original State of Decay submission included in-game medications that consisted of both legal and illicit substances. A special edition was re-submitted for classification, which developer Undead Labs described in a post on its Facebook page with, ’Stimulants out! 'Supplements' in!" The special edition of the game has been rated for mild impact drug use and sex, high-impact violence, and moderate impact language and themes. No further details regarding an Australian release date have been revealed. State of Decay focuses on surviving in a zombie-infested world, and promises a dynamically generated experience. It will be released exclusively for the Xbox 360, although developer Undead Labs has made reference to a PC release in future. The game sold over 500,000 copies on the Xbox Live Arcade within three weeks of its release in North America, making it the fastest-selling original game on XBLA. Infinity Blade: Dungeons has been officially canceled, Chair cofounder and creative director Donald Mustard said on the most recent Epic Games podcast. The news comes after developer Impossible Studios was shut down in February, just six months after the outfit was originally formed. "It was a concept that originated from Epic and was an idea that we were happy to support. But when the studio working on [Dungeons] was closed, the game was canceled. That's really all I can say," Mustard said. Though the game is no more, that does not mean the Infinity Blade franchise is going away altogether. "There's more we at Chair are totally planning to do in the Infinity Blade universe," Mustard added. "More games, more books, maybe even other products. And we are very excited about that." Epic Games announced Infinity Blade: Dungeons during an Apple iPad event in March 2012. Epic Games president Mike Capps said of the game, "These guys are redefining gaming again." According to data published by research firm Gartner this week, worldwide PC shipments dropped 10.9 percent during the quarter to 76 million units. This marks the fifth consecutive quarter of diminished shipments, the firm points out, making it the "longest duration of decline in the PC market's history." Every region analyzed showed year-over-year declines, with the overall shrink attributed to the rise of less expensive computing options, like tablets. "We are seeing the PC market reduction directly tied to the shrinking installed base of PCs, as inexpensive tablets displace the low-end machines used primarily for consumption in mature and developed markets," said Gartner principal analyst Mikako Kitagawa in a statement. "In emerging markets, inexpensive tablets have become the first computing device for many people, who at best are deferring the purchase of a PC," he continued. "This is also accounting for the collapse of the mini notebook market." Data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), also published this week, matches up with Gartner's, saying global PC shipments fell to 75.6 million in the second quarter. The firm attributes the results to "economic pressures" and increased competition. "The numbers reflect a market that is still struggling with the transition to touch-based systems running Windows 8 as well as justifying ultrabook prices in the face of economic pressures and competition from tablets and other devices," the IDC said. [UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, a Capcom representative confirmed an organizational restructuring of the company resulted in "several" layoffs at the publisher's United States office. "Capcom today laid off several employees from the US office as part of an overall organizational restructure of the company," Capcom said. "The transition to the new generation of hardware and changing industry landscape have required us to adapt our business to best meet our new goals." "We sincerely thank each individual for their contributions and wish them well." The original story is below. Capcom today launched a staff reorganization resulting in layoffs affecting multiple employees, including senior vice president Christian Svensson, according to a statement from the eight-year company veteran on Google Plus. Svensson volunteered to leave the company, though he did not say who else was affected or how extensive the cuts were. "Sadly, I'm not the only one affected by the reorganization today," he said. "Over the next few days, I'll be gathering resumes from as many as I can and will be sending them out to my contacts around the industry to see if there's a 'love connection' to be made." A Capcom representative was not immediately available to comment on the reported layoffs or if development on any projects is affected. "I've had the opportunity to interface with the best fans any company could ever hope to have," Svensson added. "I know that I wasn't always able to deliver what they wanted, but I promise that I did my best to champion their needs and wants. So 'thank you' to the fans who made my job rewarding, challenging, and, if nothing else, interesting." Svensson formerly held the position of vice president of entertainment publishing at Midway and was a games journalist before that. In his Facebook farewell post today he said he is proud of what his team accomplished but has been contemplating leaving for some time. "While I wish the company the best of luck, Capcom is going in a different direction and the need for people at my level, relative to other areas, is lacking," he added. "Those who know me well, know that I've been ready to go for quite some time. We tried some things that worked. We tried others that didn't. We fought fights that were worth fighting and even won a few. I'm proud of what we accomplished." Read and Post Comments | Get the full article at GameSpot | |
