Evo 2013 livestream draws in 1.7 million viewers on Twitch Jul 16th 2013, 03:54 Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament draws 144,848 concurrent viewers; Super Smash Bros Melee tournament attracts 134,000.
This year's Evolution Championship Series (Evo) tournament drew a record 1.7 million unique viewers on streaming site Twitch. According to Twitch.tv vice president of marketing Matthew DiPietro (via Polygon), the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 tournament attracted a maximum of 144,848 concurrent viewers, followed by the Super Smash Bros Melee tournament, which drew in in 134,000 watchers. The Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition tournament amassed 125,000 concurrent users at its peak. The numbers beat all previous records for fighting game tournaments streamed on Twitch, with the total unique numbers for this year's Evo 50 percent higher than last year's event. Ahead of the tournament, Nintendo initially denied organisers permission to stream Super Smash Bros Melee gameplay. The company quickly reversed its decision to allow the game to be included. 2K today announced that Ultimate Warrior will be a preorder bonus for WWE 2K14. The playable character will be exclusive to those who reserve a copy of the fighting game for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 from participating retailers. "It was my good fortune to be his creator and performer, and I am humbled by all those fans who've not only kept his legacy alive, but deepened it over time," Warrior said in a statement. Ultimate Warrior made his WWE debut in 1987 and is known for his ring entrance and personality, among other traits. "Fans love him, opponents fear him, and everyone can agree that he's one of the most iconic Legends in WWE history," said 2K senior director of marketing Chris Snyder in a statement. WWE 2K14 launches October 29 in North America and November 1 internationally. 2K parent company Take-Two Interactive acquired the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) license for video games earlier this year following THQ's bankruptcy. The multi-year licensing agreement will see WWE games continue to be developed by Yuke's. Developer Oculus VR would "love" for its Oculus Rift virtual reality headset to be free one day, CEO Brendan Iribe told Edge during the recent Develop conference in Brighton. In discussing launch plans for the device, Iribe said the Oculus Rift is expected to be publicly released for $300. However, through potential subsidized offers, the headset could be free sometime in the future, he said. "The lower the price point, the wider the audience," Iribe said. "We have all kinds of fantasy ideas. We'd love it to be free one day, so how do we get it as close to free as possible? Obviously it won’t be that in the beginning. We're targeting the $300 price point right now but there's the potential that it could get much less expensive with a few different relationships and strategies." Sony is considering "many" pricing options for the PlayStation 4, while Microsoft has already released a subsidized Xbox 360. This business model, also widespread for cell phones, could be implemented for the Oculus Rift, Iribe said. "You can imagine if Microsoft and Sony can go out and subsidize consoles because there's enough money to be made on software and other areas, then there's the potential that this, in partnership, could get subsidized," Iribe said. "Let's say there was some game you played in VR that everybody loved and everybody played and we made $100 a month--or even $10 a month--at some point the hardware's cheap enough and we're making enough that we could be giving away the headset." Iribe made clear that "we're not there yet," but the company is thinking "all the time" about how it can make the Oculus Rift free. Oculus Rift headsets are currently available at $300 for development kits. Oculus VR recently secured $16 million in venture capital funding to "accelerate" development. No public release date for the headset has been announced.
