Activision's behemoth shooter franchise Call of Duty and newcomer Destiny can "peacefully coexist," according to Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg. Speaking with IGN, the executive explained that the audiences for both games are different. "They're very different games made by very different creative visionaries. I think that they can peacefully coexist with one another," Hirshberg said. "I think that what Call of Duty has done, it's done better than anybody. The multiplayer is a visceral, impactful, white-knuckle-ride experience." "What Bungie has done, they have done better than anyone as well. The first-person shooter genre has shown tremendous staying power, as well as tremendous capacity in terms of the appetite people have for it," he added. "I think what we've seen is that if there are good games in this genre, people will show up to play them. But if you have to compete, it’s nice to compete with yourself." Call of Duty: Ghosts launches this November, while Destiny is in a pre-alpha state of development and is expected to launch sometime in 2014. Elsewhere in the interview, Hirshberg explained that Activision has made a "sizeable investment" in Bungie and Destiny, one that represents one of the "biggest investments in a new IP that's ever been made in the industry." Valve's Steam Trading Cards will leave beta this Wednesday, the publisher has announced. All Steam users will gain access to the trading cards on June 26 at 11am PDT. "Making trading cards available to all Steam users is a step towards an event we think everyone can be excited about," said Valve. The event could possibly be this year's Steam Summer Sale, which has traditionally started at a similar time of the year. 2012's sale began on July 10, with 2011's kicking off on June 30. Features such as trade offers and a card binder won't be available in the Steam Trading Cards system at launch, adds Valve, but will be incorporated at a later date. Steam Trading Cards are dropped randomly when playing an applicable game, but only around half of the available cards will be given to any player through the system: the rest have to be traded with other players. The beta for Steam Trading Cards launched in May 2013 with support mostly for Valve's own games, but the service has grown to currently include support for 33 titles: Borderlands 2, Sanctum 2, Don't Starve, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Monaco: What's Yours Is Mine, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Magicka, Strike Suit Infinity, Zack Zero, Bit.Trip Runner 2, Team Fortress 2, Brutal Legend, Cubemen 2, Anodyne, FTL, Super Meat Boy, Monster Loves You!, Trine 2, Go Home Dinosaurs!, Triple Town, Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten, Serious Sam 3, Tower Wars, They Bleed Pixels, Jagged Alliance - Back in Action, A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda, Blocks That Matter, Really Big Sky, Faerie Solitaire, Dota 2, and 1’ 2’ 3’ Kick it! Physical discs aren't going away anytime soon, as most consumers "don't want to buy online right now," PlayStation marketing executive Guy Longworth has told GamesIndustry International. "I think the reality is this: Our digital business is growing fast, and we have incredibly strong partnerships with our key retail partners as well," Longworth said. "What we try to do is offer a relatively level playing field and let the gamers decide. We're not trying to advantage them, we believe in consumer choice." "It's clear that the vast majority of the people want to go down to GameStop or Best Buy, they don't want to buy it online right now," he added. "How that might change in the future is kind of hard to predict. People might be quite surprised, I think physical games will be around a lot longer than some people think." All games for Sony's PlayStation 4 will be available digitally as well as through physical retailers. The same is true for Microsoft's Xbox One. The PS4 launches later this year for $400, though Sony is exploring "many" different pricing options for the next-generation platform. Sony Computer Entertainment Europe boss Jim Ryan has spoken about the company's relatively thin unveiling of new first-party titles for the PlayStation 4 at its E3 2013 press conference, but has emphasised that there's a "lot coming" from the company. Ryan also hinted that Sony will make announcements at August's Gamescom trade show in Cologne, Germany. Speaking in an interview with Gamereactor, Ryan said "there's a lot coming. I'm sure you heard from [Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios] that he has, just his studios, he has 30 games in development. 20 are going to ship within the first year of the console's life, and of those 12 are new IP. So there's a lot going on, it's just we need to keep stuff back." Sony unveiled Ready at Dawn's The Order: 1886 at its E3 2013 press conference. During the announcement of the PlayStation 4 in February, Sony debuted Knack, inFamous: Second Son, Killzone: Shadow Fall, and DriveClub. "We've Gamescom for us Europeans, and we need to have something to show at Gamescom, don't we?" concluded Ryan. The PlayStation 4 will launch later in 2013 for $399. Gamescom will take place this year from August 21 through 25. NBA Live 14 will be exclusive to next-generation consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4, executive producer Sean O'Brien has revealed. "There is an enormous financial commitment to the development of the product on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, including the size of the team and resources required to give us every opportunity to make a great basketball game that can compete with such a solid franchise like NBA 2K," O'Brien said in an open letter to fans. Elsewhere in the note, O'Brien explained that his ambition for the NBA Live series is for the product to be an "authentic NBA simulation" that is "rooted in the sport and lifestyle of basketball." To this end, O'Brien said the team at EA Sports has gone to great lengths to ensure dribbling and ball handling, as well as half-court and transition play, have been fine tuned. He also revealed that NBA Live will make use of data from statistic-tracking serviceSynergy Sports Technologies thanks to a new partnership with the company. This alliance will allow EA Sports to update NBA Live 14 "within an hour" based on something that happens in the NBA. "We're going to be making an enormous investment into this connected experience. There has been a lot of talk the last few years about how great NBA Live was going to be," O'Brien said. "The 'talking' is over. The vision is a simple one: To create a great basketball game exclusively for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4." NBA Live 14 is due out later this year running on the EA Sports Ignite game engine. Previous installments NBA Elite 11 and NBA Live 13 were both canceled in the 11th hour. Competitor NBA 2K14 launches this fall for current- and next-generation consoles. It is 2K Sports' "biggest endeavor yet" and will feature Miami Heat star LeBron James on its cover. The pairing of Battlefield developer DICE and the iconic Star Wars brand is a "match made in heaven," according to EA Games boss Patrick Söderlund. Speaking with CVG, Söderlund said DICE building the new Battlefront game "just feels right" and made clear it will be developed by veterans. "You will have people that have worked on Battlefield for many years on it, you will have [DICE executive producer Patrick Bach] himself involved in it," Söderlund said. "These are experienced DICE people in Sweden building this game--it's being built in Stockholm." Beyond a brief teaser trailer for the game at E3, EA and DICE have remained quiet on what the new Star Wars Battlefront game will offer. Söderlund wouldn't add much, saying that EA and DICE are conceiving the project as a "rebirth of the brand." Elsewhere, Söderlund shed light on the unlikely story of how DICE came to be paired up with the Star Wars brand in the first place. "The DICE guys, Karl Magnus Troedsson and Patrick Bach, were talking and I told them we were in dialogues with Disney over this deal and they just looked at me and said, 'Why haven't you spoken to us? What are you doing? We want to make Battlefront,'" Söderlund said. "DICE is a very particular place and they are very proud of what they do and you don't really tell them what to do," he added. "I didn't anticipate them wanting to work on a license--they've always been new IP or their own IP. But they were just like, 'we would kill to make this game' and the whole studio started talking about it like, 'please give us this game.'" DICE's new Star Wars: Battlefront game is one of multiple Star Wars titles EA currently has in development as part of its exclusive deal with brand owner Disney. Dead Space studio Visceral Games is also working on an all-new Stars Wars title, though no details are available about this project.
